Sortland, Norway.

A small town in Northern Norway, the main commercial centre of Vesterålen, the lesser know geographical sibling to Lofoten, but on equal levels as far as beatiful nature is concerned.

The town itself is not much to speak of. A somewhat ugly, small arctic town, where there has been a more or less successful/failed project to paint all the buildings blue to make things more interesting.

However, if you go out of town, there is a lot of beatiful scenery. Mountains, fjords, and such. Perfect for the nature lover. Northern lights if you're here in winter time (on clear cold nights only, of course. Otherwise, be prepared for the occasional blizzard. ). And midnight sun in summer.

So, yeah.

Walking home from university today I had a water fight with the sky and lost. And just a few days ago (Monday or Tuesday.. I think.) it was thundering so that the walls of the brick building I live in was shaking. It was interesting. A convergence of sound waves? This area is quite mountaineous, so maybe they were reflected between the mountains.

But before this it was quite sunny and nice. Right now it's 7,8 °C and mostly cloudy.

As a meteorology student I suppose I should find this thread interesting.

Today has been pretty windy with periods of rain. The day has also had a very chilly feel to it. As of right now (22:25) it's 11 °C, cloudy and 7 m/s wind from southeast.

Today hasn't been to bad, as it hasn't rained. It has been partly sunny, and relatively .. warm, but not really.

Right now, it's 10 °C (at 22:15) and 3,7 m/s wind from west/north-west.

But is seems there will be some more rain (the blue bars...) by tomorrow night and on thursday, according to this weather forecast.

I still have two exams left, one on the 8th, and one on the 14th.

And sometime in between there, I/we will do the remaining part in a field course in meteorology. Basically meaning we will drive around in a car and do some measurements, but the downside is, it has to be done in the middle of the night, or very early morning, before the sun gets up, because night time conditions are what we want to measure.. And at this time of year, and this high latitude, the sun rises at around 4:30 in the morning, so it's gonna be either really early, or really late.

Well, that was maybe a slight digression.. It would of course be cool to be done with the exams, but on the other hand, this semester has been sort of busy, and if the exams had been any earlier.. it probably wouldn't have been so good for the results!

Anything above 20°C (68 °F) is warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt. Above 25°C (77 °F) is hot. If it gets above 30 °C (86 °F) its just to hot. I prefer the 20 - 25 °C range. 15 - 20 °C is also just fine. Today, the temperature has been around 14 - 15 °C.

However, since this place is usually quite windy, it rarely feels that warm.

At the moment, the police just held a press conference where they said that they have no theory on who or why etc. The situation seems pretty chaotic. This explosion happened just close to 3 hours ago.

Norway has taken part in the Afghanistan war, but I don't want to make any speculations..

They say this is the most dramatic thing to happen in Norway since WWII.

Oh, and the latest numbers are that 15 people are injured, and two people are dead. The prime minister was not in office, and members of the government are most likely safe, too.

--
Update 19:49: 7 people are now confirmed dead. There has also been a shooting incident at a nearby gathering for the Norwegian Laber Party's youth, where 4 or 5 people have been shot by someone dressed as a policeman.

It seems unlikely that there should be some higher power of any kind. So I don't really believe in that.

It sounds strange, but I think the universe has always existed, and that there is an infinite amount of space available. If there is an infinite amount of space available, why not an infinite amount of time?

Sidetracking slightly, but I went to see a talk/'show'* by an astronomer which claimed that the research community had seen something that could be evidence of another universe (!), possibly colliding with ours! He showed a figure which looked like a stack of elliptical discs hovering in space above each other, where each disk represented one universe. The colliding universe had then somehow turned, so that it was no longer parallell to the other universes...

* It was science, but it was a bit more like science directed at children. Hence the 'show' part.

Anyway.. about the afterlife.

As I find it hard to imagine that I will just disappear after death, I do believe there is something more, but I have not seen it, so I do not know what it is. I suppose this in a way parallells to what I said about the universe always existing. In the same way, I, and every other living thing, will also always exist. Not the physical bodies of course. We all know that they don't last forever.. but the inner stuff (call it soul, if you will..) that makes up who we really are.

I think all this parallells to the law about conservation of mass, or energy, that mass/energy cannot be destroyed or created, just moved around.

I think that nothing can ever be created, or disappear, and that it is a universal law. Things can only be redistributed and/or transform.

As for ghosts, I do believe in ghosts, but I am not entirely sure what they are.

I believe that I may have seen a ghost once. It only appeared a very short moment, and all I could discern was that it had the shape of a man, possibly wearing a hat and with a tool belt. So I figured it was the ghost of a worker, possibly a carpenter.

I could definetaly write more about this ghost story, but I will try to keep it short. All this happened in a house which me and my family lived in from 1996 to 2008 (I moved out in 2006). My mom and sister claimed to have some strange sightings too, more often then me, as I only saw it once. What my sister saw had more of the appearence of a poltergeist. I never experienced any of that. Even our dog reacted to something once, that none of us could see.

Anyway, later, my mom told me that we had bought the house from a brother, or other family member (can't remember) of a dead man, that supposedly died in the Kings Bay accident - a mining accident. So it wasn't a carpenter, but a miner? I don't know.

I read more about it on the internet, and found a list of names of the people that died, and one of those names was marked to come from my home town, as well as having the surname of the person we bought the house from... Creepy.

Anyway, to sum it up:

I don't believe in any deities, really. Though, sometimes I can be a little confused. I believe that we will not go away after we die, but I have no idea where we go. I do not believe that we have any say in the matter, and I don't believe in any form of heaven or hell. Things have always existed, and will always exist, some place/form or other..
I do believe in ghosts, but I am not sure what they are. It is a strange idea (as is everything else..) that souls will be 'left behind' to roam the earth.. probably especially since I don't think there is any set destination after we die.

Summer didn't start off to bad, it was sunny most of the time. Of course, around here, this often also brings in the cold winds from the north, so temperatures were never that high. (15 degrees Celsius is a good temperature. )

However, most of July so far hasn't been the best. Temperatures around 12(+/-) degrees Celsius, wind and periodically lots of rain. My hometown were the wettest place in the country a few times, and other parts further north suffered a flood which destroyed roads and farm lands.

When the weather is like that for days... once you see the sun you find yourself wondering what the hell that bright thing is doing on the sky...

Spring has also been pretty cold, as is evident in the amount of snow and ice that were still found in some mountaineous areas. I did some hiking (when the weather was still good) and found snow in places that were completely bare last summer.

Inspired by a question raised to the audience at a climate conference I just went to, I would like to ask you the same.

If you did not know this already, the sea ice extent in the Arctic is now at it's lowest value since satellites first began to monitor it, breaking the record low observed in 2007. Do you think that the 2013 ice extent will be lower or higher than that of 2012?

Link: U.S. National Snow & Ice Data Center : Arctic sea ice extent breaks 2007 record low

Autumn has began here, definately. And with it comes the rain and the cold. What was left of hurricane Kirk (after merging with another extra-tropical low) just brushed by and dumped some rain and gave some wind to the coast here, especially in central Norway.

That is a common phenomenon in the North/Norh West Atlantic. Tropical hurricanes travel north/north east, loose their tropical characteristics, merge with an extra-tropical low (usually in proximity to Iceland (see: Icelandic Low)), and sometimes reintensify slightly due to the merging, and go somewhere along the north western European coast. Usually affecting Ireland, the British Isles, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Of course, they are not really that different from the normal autumn lows we get around here anyway, even though their origin might be slightly different (part tropical, instead of purely extra-tropical). [In telling the difference, it helps being a meteorologist, or particularly interested in the subject.]

Sometimes they can be storms/borderline hurricanes, but usually they are just comparable in strength to tropical depressions. Just colder, since they are, of course, not tropical anymore.

Hello, and thanks for answering the poll.

The point of this questionnaire was that when scientists were asked this question, the majority (I don't remember the numbers now, but I think it was something around 70 - 80%) said that they thought the sea ice extent in 2013 would be higher. Which makes sense, because of 'natural variability'. In the non-scientist general public, however, the majority answered 'less sea ice'.

Photobucket

The figure above is courtesy of Årthun et. al. 2012; nsidc.org. It shows the modeled sea ice area in the Barents Sea, north of Norway. In the Barents Sea, the sea ice melts completely during summer (hence you see that the non-smoothed data (thin blue line) go down to about zero once a year), so this is not representative of the total sea ice in the Arctic. However, the trend is roughly the same.

The trend is indicated by the thick blue stipled line, and is really just the difference between the average value at the start of the time series, to the average value at the end. Note that in a climatological perspective, this a short time series.

The thick blue line is a smoothed version of the actual data, and the actual data is the thin blue line. What is interesting in this context are the peaks of the thin blue line (You can imagine a line connecting all those dots). Some years they are lower, some years they are higher. Though, during the period, the minima and maxima of the peaks goes down, according to the trend.

This can be transferred also to the minimum sea ice extent of the entire Arctic ocean. The trend will show that it decreases, though some years the minimum will be lower then other years, and some years will be higher. This is the annual variability.

Though this is a short timeseries, compare the peaks of the period 1980 - 1990 (period 1), and the peaks of 2000 - 2010 (period 2). The highest peak(s) in period 1 is (are) higher than the highest peaks in period 2, but the peaks aren't continuosly getting lower for each year. After a low peak, the next peak is usually higher, or the same, and sometimes lower.

The point is, the decrease in sea ice cover is not a constant. It is not continuosly getting lower for each year, but jumps around about a mean decreasing trend.

I hope I did not confuse you to much with this lengthy post! The idea was to test you guys a bit, and hopefully improve your understanding about climate variability! You can apply this to different parameters as well, such as temperature or precipitation (they also vary alot, of course, from location to location, and not just in time). I am not sure about wind, so don't ask me about that.

*edit: Kazinsal, I see that you are getting into Geology. That is cool. I would encourage you to continue down that path, as I have become increasingly interested in it as well. Just don't end up in the oil business.

I have had a deadjournal since 2004. It used to be open to everyone, then just friends, and now it is not open to anyone, so it serves as a diary. I write in it whenever I want to, which nowadays is on a daily/sub-daily/weekly basis. In the past, there have been gaps of some months, because I would sometimes forget about it.

I am in the very slow process of taking backups of it, since I don't know how long the deadjournal website will last.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
