I don't think anyone has any right to bitch about anything regarding this remake.. The original Persona localization was one of the most atrocious things in video gaming, so actually getting a proper translation, as well as a graphical enhancement, and an overall better interface with tweaked mechanics to the gameplay.. far more than makes up for any soundtrack changes they might have gone with.

Not that I personally care that they changed the music anyway.. I mean from what I've heard of it it doesn't half-bad at all.

I haven't posted here in ages! Goodness!
Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do with FFXIII it looks like, wish I'd been on board with this sooner, as some of these discoveries are really fascinating.. But I digress I fear. Though not directly related to XIII itself, I recently picked up XIII-2 for the PC and have been prodding at it the last couple of days.. I thought given the interest in this thread, and since both games are essentially running on the same engine, why not share some of my findings?

Since it's only been two days, I've only gotten to do a bit of mucking around, but eh..
For those interested in seeing, I made an album of some of the stuff I've been looking into:

Primarily at the moment, I'm trying to understand how the game handles the party system.. It's really bizarre actually, since it seems like the game handles Mog as a third party member or something..? I haven't come to grips with that one yet, but he seems to be handled as the third PC of your party, and if you remove him you completely lose all access to Mog functions. (Some other weirdness can result from this too..)

Also apparently the entire original XIII cast have full fledged PC profiles for learning magic, equipment, levels, etc.. This isn't exactly news I don't think, as this was a thing I think some save hackers found out on the consoles ages back, but it's interesting because I discovered something different about the PC version.. on the console versions, I found profiles for Lebreau and Gadot, which seemed like nothing more than remnants of the original game, where they were temporary party members.. trying to force them into your party also crashed the game on consoles, unsurprisingly. What's really interesting though is that you CAN add them to your party on the PC version without it causing a crash..! They show up and sort of function even, and strangely enough it looks like they even have mini-portraits in battle! (At least Lebreau did when I tested)

It's worth adding that a few things of what's seen in the album above is just me modifying how the "costume" function of the game works. (Such as Stria and Adult Hope) I noticed it's possible to load virtually any model in the game by passing it off as a "costume", though animations are a messier matter (those are possible too though, with some tweaking).. Still, if we could figure out a proper hard-modding solution, we could probably do a lot of fun things with this game..

Thanks, though there's still quite a LOT to discover yet I think..

Like this.. As I said in the previous post Mog is treated as a party member, so by replacing him with one of the original XIII cast I can get one of the old team members to follow me around on the field, heh! Though they don't show up in combat this way, because neither does Mog normally. (either slot three is hardcoded that way, or something is flagged somewhere to disable slot three for battle, not sure yet.)

Interesting side note: If Mog is removed from the party, he disappears from Serah's "victory pose" at the end of battle. Normally she throws her weapon in the air, it transforms into Mog, and she catches and hugs him.. But if he's not in the party he never appears and she just hugs the air. That surprises me because I wouldn't think that animation would rely on whether he was in the "party" or not.

EDIT:
This was much more of a pain in the arse to get to work than it should have been:

Her character profile \ equipment screen. She has a portrait, her name shows up, and her gun is loaded with her now. For some reason her character profile doesn't want to load normally, I'm not sure what's actually causing that yet.. but I managed a hacky workaround that got it to show up above. Main album was also updated again to show her loaded into combat too.

It seems like it's a port of 360 version, yeah. But your hunch was right, DLC from both console versions is present in the PC version! Of course the crappy thing is ALL weapon DLC was disabled for the PC port, hell if I know WHY they chose to do that, but yeah.. I've had some limited success in re-activating the DLC weapons, but the methods I've used are hacky and useless as a long term solution as it doesn't get stored in the save file this way. (The weapons like to show up as "Unknown" for some reason, likely the flag for owning the DLC for them is turned off somewhere..)

Also that's a really cool find of yours, I hadn't thought to check how the new settings options worked..
And yeah, once I've cleaned up my notes I'll start posting more detailed information on my findings, right now it's an utter mess to read, and I'm lucky I understand it myself. lol

I'll take a look at it to see what it does, I'd already unlocked most of the stuff myself but I'm curious to see if its methods differ to my own or not.

Okay yeah, I see exactly what he did. It's pretty similar to what I was doing before, but his solution is a bit cleaner than mine was. (I'd been spending most of my time hacking the game elsewhere, so I hadn't tried a proper DLC solution yet..)

Change the following:

ffxiii2img.exe+56D480

push ecx

Into this:

And voila, all of the removed DLC is unlocked. I figured those of you reading this would prefer to do it yourselves over downloading a third party application, hence why I'm providing the code here. It's worth adding though that even though this does work, it seems to have a minor side effect of listing a costume for Serah and Noel twice, and adding the DLC weapons to the shops twice as well (not the accessories though?). Probably pretty easy to fix, but I'll leave it as it is for now and go back to work on more interesting things.

That'd be really easy to do too, if I could FIND the bloody script that handles it. Despite my efforts thus far, I haven't successfully narrowed it down enough yet. For now though this is just a work around until we manage to come up with a more permanent solution.

Also I purchased XIII for PC recently since it was on sale, so I'll start looking into that game and experimenting with the findings here before long. Maybe I can provide some aid with the ongoing Ark research!

EDIT:
Heads up! Square patched XIII-2 this morning (just now in fact) and promptly removed the DLC costumes. (Well, less "removed" and more "replaced" them textureless models of Lightning and Hope.) Fortunately I have backups of the models themselves, so it's easily fixable, but it IS annoying.

As a side note, they don't appear to have done anything whatsoever to the DLC weapons or accessories. I guess it was just the licensed outfits they cared about removing?

Nah, offsets are the same. The EXE didn't get patched at all in fact, heh.
I mostly did some guesswork earlier on what they did, but I can confirm right now they outright deleted the models and textures for the DLC outfits.. this is shitty, because the way we repack files currently relies on the presence of the old files - in other words, we can't just stuff them back into the current archive.

I think there may also be a script they changed somewhere which points those particular outfits to the stock Lightning and Hope models as well, but I don't know yet. It's still early and I haven't had enough time to dig into this properly yet. Damn it square, you're ruining my day.

Oh boy, they were actually pretty farking lazy on this one. You see, every costume has a couple of different copies.. I suspect this is because some are used for cutscenes (particularly Serah and her "Eyes of Etro" scenes use different models) - not sure if any of them are actually higher res or not, haven't looked too closely, though I assume they are as well.. Anyway I digress! They removed only the field\battle models, none of the cutscene models. lol

It'd actually be REALLY easy to mem-patch this and fix the whole thing, but fuck it at this point, I want a hard-modded fix so they don't pull this shit on us again.

We can decrypt them, re-encrypt them, and pack them back.. but as for actually READING the damn things? Meh, that's mostly unexplored territory as far as I know. Shouldn't be THAT hard to modify them though, I'm positive I could fix it if I just knew WHERE to find the appropriate files. It's a mess sifting through it blindly, ugh.

Nah, I've experimented with this. You can rig any model to any skeletal animation actually..
I even had Serah setup with Mog animations at one point. lol

The game handles it all pretty well. It's mostly facial anims that deform on the wrong models, and that doesn't seem to happen with the cutscene ones. (Though it seems as though Noel is missing his DLC cutscene models, upon closer inspection.. only Serah's survived for some reason.)

I'm assuming that they're using the stock Lightning and Hope models which were already in the game, as opposed to adding new ones.. Though the textures don't load on the placeholders, so maybe not? Eh.. Hard to say at this point. Here are the XIII cast members models for reference either way:

I created a quick and dirty patch using xdelta to "fix" the problem by downgrading the container and filelist back to the previous version: https://mega.co.nz/#!WVczxCjR!zTZYrAK-B3hkWnaPF93JC1S9BoY3ISxAPLKE_S0KsVs

It's not ideal but it's sufficient for now I think, at least until we come up with a more permanent solution.

The script would be the ideal solution, though we still have the problem of repacking the containers.. Unfortunately the current tools for repacking relies heavily on the files already being present in the container, if they're not there the tool simply doesn't work.. which means, since they deleted the outfits entirely.. we don't have a filepath to use to repack the DLC.

As for why the textures aren't loading? Still bloody well clueless to that myself. Generally speaking when you tell the game to load a TRB, it automatically loads the associated IMGU files necessary for the textures.. But not with these, for some odd reason.. If I had to guess, part of the game is still looking for the textures in the now deleted DLC paths, but that's still unusual behavior from what I've seen up until now.. I feel like this patch was heavily rushed out the door, so maybe the fix they implemented was sloppy too?

Pretty much, yeah. It was just a matter of making sure the patch was small and easy enough to circulate.
I'll find a better solution eventually, I just wanted to fix this as quickly and painlessly as possible.. Thanks though for testing it! Glad it doesn't make the game explode into rainbows or something. lol

Just thought I'd give a quick heads up to my progress on XIII-2:

I've figured out how to do a lot with the game now, and modding it is officially a very real possibility now.
More on the note of unused content though, the sequel is literally swimming with leftovers from the first game, and it also looks as though there's quite a few monsters and other things cut from the game too. I'll make a comprehensive list later with screenshots and the like when I have the time.

What's bizarre to me is that the prerelease text about that fountain was essentially accurate a translation.. But the final version isn't..? Worse the final version has crappy formatting, as Xkeeper pointed out. I don't understand why they changed it.
