I've updated my timer. Link

• Fixed a bug that caused the timer to desynchronize from real-time
• Changed the display to improve readability
• Added Mario

Now, it is worthy of ANY office workstation during lunch break. Check it out!

I thought about it, but I'd like to keep the old-timey pixely look. Things like Fox or Pikmin & Olimar would throw a wrench in the works. Still, I'll see what I can do.

I draw the line at fan art. When I use images or music, I'm a real stickler for keeping with the source material.

Change of topic. My appologies.

I just got done filling in my Kirby Air Ride checklists after a week and a half of playing. Would have been done before, but that Vs. King Dedede Stadium event took WAY longer to show up than it should have. Well over 200 City Trials before it showed its face. But now I have 360 golden squares, and all 15 purple blocks sitting there never having been used. A perfect save file.

In any case, I look at my Air Ride checklist and the blocks that awarded purpble blocks. The purple ones let you check off any un-achieved challenge of your choice in the list. But if you complete the checklist, everything will be pristine and golden except for the purple ones. They're ugly, and you are persuaded to do them anyway.

I thought it'd be funny to start the game with no memory card, unlock one of the purple blocks, then use that block to unlock one of the other purple blocks. And so on.

So I unlock one by running into a fire dragon in Magma Flows. The checklist square fills in. Huh? That's not in the same spot as the one from my other save file! I continued to unlock a few more boxes, and they were all in different spots than the save file I just completed. With the exception of the one in the bottom-right corner, they were all completely randomized!
__________

So how this applies to Brawl... The Challenges screen seems to be very much like Kirby Air Ride's Checklist screen. Since Kirby's screen is completely random, you think Brawl's will be too? It'd make it difficult to magically unlock certain things. "I happen to know that Character X is 3 over and 2 down. Wait, what? That's Music Y!"

I suspect many a Golden Hammer will be wasted on trivial rewards.

Today's update is... 1080° Snowboarding!

Ah well. At least it's a Nintendo 64 game this time. The library was lingering at 10 titles for the longest time.

On a side, I'm fairly certain Japan got SSB today if they didn't already have it. What a drag.

Hey, good news! I just looked it up. The Japanese library of Nintendo 64 titles on Virtual Console is currently identical to the North American library. 'Cept they got 1080° 13 days ago. Might pay attention to their list to see what titles are up-and-coming to this region.

Seijikia:
My money's on stress testing the Wi-Fi Connection servers. They were pushing it for trial time between Jan24 and Feb10 as that provided three weeks of testing. But they had to delay the game's release; pushing the Japanese date back one week. Two weeks of stress testing does sound a little short. I bet they figured that if they're gonna delay it, they might as well accomplish what they wanted to. Hence the new 5-week gap between release dates.

Everybody:
Let the fanfare commence, for I will start my internet hiatus a day early. The game comes out Jan31 in Japan, and news of it will be all over the internet. I want to save the goods for myself. Now that I have a checklist telling me how to unlock things, I can make sure I do everything in the game without the internet's help. Thus, I'll avoid spoilers at any cost. This new video, whatever it contains, sounds like it's pushing the issue a bit too close to home, so I'll head off tonight and stay away for some time. Once I've had a chance to thorougly enjoy the game for myself, I'll be back.

Until then, you can contact me via bafap5@yahoo.com if you need to get ahold of me.

I'm baaaaaaaaack!

I was expecting the game to last me at least two days before beating the adventure mode and unlocking all the characters and stages, but hey... At least I didn't have to leave the system on overnight to unlock a character like Mewtwo in Melee.

My thoughts:

- Graphics -
On-par with other high-end visuals on the system like Excite Truck and Metroid Prime 3. Characters look very good, backgrounds are beautiful and the menu is reminiscent of Kirby Air Ride.

- Music -
There are many. They start you out with over 100 and ask you to collect at least 50 more. They come from a wide range of artists, which yeilds a wide range of styles. I've never heard techno, orchestra and heavy metal all at the same time before.

Remember how Sakurai said the game's theme music is like the core of the game's music? He meant it. My only complaint about the music in this game is that if there's anything that has to do with Smash Bros. specifically, including much of the adventure mode, it's a variation of that one tune. I sit there thinking, "Hey, something new! Wait, no... no..."

- Gameplay -
It's like the N64 and GameCube titles combined as far as gameplay is concerned. People keep commenting on the fact that it initially feels like you float around in the air, but after a while you see that it all fits into place. Combos work again! Hitting people hurts them! The CPU won't recover from Meteor Smashes with wimpy jumps!

It really is a good mesh of the previous two games. Smash Bros. was known for crazy combos and Melee was known for lightning-quick slap fighting. Now we have both. There are fists flying every which way wherever people aren't.

- King Dedede -
I've heard a lot about how people don't like Dedede. I was curious until I tried him myself. Many of his attacks have long delays on them; approaching one second. People want to see his hammer swing immediately when they do a Smash Attack, but it simply doesn't work that way. On the other hand, no joke, you can send someone flying at high speed to their doom in just 3 hits.

The power of this guy is tremendous, but the delay for his attacks is unwieldy. To use him well, you need to be pretty smart and predict ahead of time where your opponents are going to be. Since the majority of players want to fight and not think, however, you hear a bunch about how people don't like him.

Music time! If traffic gets rough, I'll take down this file. Downloads from this game are in high demand right now.

If you don't have the game yet, this is the kind of music you have to look forward to. WARNING: It's not exactly a spoiler, but it IS something you won't be able to enjoy later if you hear it now.

The title of the music is in this spoiler tag.

I beg to differ. The slapstick universe that is Smash Bros. makes a very inviting situation for friends to join in and have some fun. I cannot stress this enough: Smash Bros. is designed so you have fun whether you win or lose. That said, I highly recommend that people play the game to have fun; let winning be secondary.

Smash Bros. has always grown old playing solo. The CPU become predictable after a while, so some good old-fashioned human interaction is needed to make things fun again.

During my internet hiatus, I started on a new project. I'm designing and implementing a cross-platform API for making OpenGL windows, sending audio to the sound card and internetworking with IP. I'm defining the API for Linux/X and Microsoft Windows.

The exact application I'm doing with this is an internet-capable Tetrisphere remake.

Download: Build 03/05/2008 (Windows 32-bit only)

The build isn't playable yet, but it generates layers, demonstrates the ball-drawing routine and has a tranquil yet intriguing background.

I'll be working on the project off and on, but don't expect frequent updates. How much I post about it depends on how it's received here in this thread.

Are you using Windows Vista? I've seen some weird things happen where the textures don't work one time, then I run it again without doing anything and it works. May be permission issues.

It's simple enough looking at the Challenges screen. Unlockable stages have an identifiable icon, so if you have the game, it's easy to find out how to unlock things. Stages are among the easiest to unlock of all the bonus features.

Tricks to making more CDs appear, courtesy of DarthDarthBinks over at Starmen.net:

1. Unlimited stock match with the only item being Pokeballs, with their spawn level set to very high. Everytime you get Mew, it drops 3 CDs as it flies away.

2. Make the only item the sandbag. Beat him up like mad to get CDs and stickers.

So... Should I worry about this, or did you guys adjust just fine?

I've been playing Melee for years, and the N64 title even longer than that. Adjusting to the new game will be a bit odd at first, but when you get the hang of it you'll be just as proficient in all the games as you ever were.

The shock factor of first playing Brawl isn't a whole lot. You don't sit there thinking "Woah, this is way freaky," you just go "Well, that's a bit different."

After some looking over of things, I think I may have found the problem. There was a bit of OpenGL code that I was using that didn't conform to the standard, but worked on my graphics card so I forgot to fix it.

For those who couldn't get the textures working, do you all happen to have ATI graphics adapters?

Anyhow, a corrected build can be found thusly:

SDL is overrated, overcomplicated and overrestricted for my tastes. Mainly, SDL tries to insert itself between the program and the computer, which I don't appreciate much. The code I've put together is the bare minimum to get a window made and an OpenGL rendering context bound to it. The rest is up to the programmer using OpenGL function calls.

In detail, the setup I've come up with is MUCH easier to use than SDL. The code is also smaller, which reduces the memory footprint. As an added bonus, I get the personal experience of working with these technologies on various operating systems.

Like they said, Vista is just a temporary piece of crud they threw to the crud dogs to hold them over. The MinWin business is a step in the right direction, as it enables the user to determine what software ultimately ends up on the system. They're taking a page out of the book of Linux, if you ask me.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
