We all have our own experiences, and you’ll probably get different suggestions from different people. The first programming language I learned was assembly, and from there the concepts of other languages like C were a cinch (more or less).

Actually, Javascript is not a bad choice at all, especially if you know HTML/CSS.

My advice would be to find something you like to do, and relate programming to it. I got into assembly through ROM hacking, and was so interested in the subject that it didn’t take long to “get.” If you’re interested in making web sites, try HTML and Javascript first and move on to server‐side scripting later. I have also heard good things about Python.

Right. Starting with the N64, a lot of emulators started doing high‐level emulation, with more of a “black box” style—instead of replicating the instruction set, the emulator instead implements the results. (See UltraHLE)

Another GED holder here—though I was homeschooled, so my graduation options would have been wonky anyway. I was 16 and have been in community college since. Definitely the best option I could have chosen.

I did go to junior high for one year, and elementary a few years before that. From what I remember it was terrible, academically and socially. People say high school teaches socialization; I say it’s the blind leading the blind.

As for other people, well, let them do whatever they want—I’m not the one who should be saying what to do. No doubt there are plenty of cases where the best choice for a person is not to go straight to college or even get a GED in the first place.

I don’t have any sympathy for Thomas‐Rasset. She appealed the last ruling and got caught lying, which is why the damages are so high. Of course, the RIAA will milk this story for all it’s worth. Copyright nowadays is a farce.

XHTML2 just got canceled. I suspect a major reason is because XHTML never took off, since IE doesn’t actually support it.

The nice thing about college is that you don’t have to turn in homework. If you don’t know the subject, do it; if rehashing fifty identical problems for the next hour won’t help you any, then don’t do it.

And yes, community college is cheap. I’m taking twelve hours—the eleven hours at the CC cost twice as much as the single hour at the U.

UNR’s changes are only in the interface; it’s still regular Ubuntu under the hood. The interface was unusably slow on my sister’s (11″ 13__×768 model) Acer Aspire, so I’m not too fond of it, but it worked at a normal speed once the netbook interface was disabled.

I’m surprised Kubuntu can’t connect when others can. Is it an older version? If vanilla Ubuntu works instead, you might use it and install the KDE packages. Or if you don’t mind the command line, you could read up on iwconfig(8) and iwlist(8).

I guess I just have cool teachers then. B] Really, I would hate having to actually turn stuff in. This is college, we’re all adults, and if we can’t understand the subject then we’ll either do enough work to learn the subject of our own volition or be weeded out.

I have one class this semester with grading for participation. It’s in a 160‐student lecture hall. How does that work?
