I wonder if you could use a Gamecube or Wii to do the transfers on real hardware. On Gamecube, you have the Gameboy Player which can run GBC games, and you can connect GBAs by link cable. IIRC, games running on the GB Player can access some GC hardware, like its controllers, so maybe they can talk to a GBA that way. Or maybe GC games can access the save files of GBC carts this way? (Though running code on a Gamecube could be a pain.)

On the Wii, again you have the GBA link cable; since it doesn't have that box in the middle (I think it's just a direct connection from GC controller pins to some of the GBA's link pins), maybe it's possible for a GBC game to talk to the Wii using that.

One thing I've thought about to achieve this is the IR link. HG/SS have an IR port built into the cartridges, and G/S have that mystery gift thing using IR on GBC. I wonder if you could exploit it (overflow a buffer?) to take over the GBC game and use the IR link to access save data. Even if not, that would be a convenient way to communicate between the two.

Not sure if it does. I mentioned controllers though because the GBA game is able to read Gamecube controllers. (I think Four Swords uses this.) So it might be able to communicate with another GBA in 8-bit mode, using the GBA-to-GC-controller cable. (Some GC games such as Wind Waker used that to display maps on the GBA.)

Well, you can always take over the GBC game the hard way.

I forgot Black/White (and their sequels) also have the IR port, so that's a few different games you can use. I don't think anyone's examined how to operate the port, though.

Where did you read about this 3DS exploit, too? I only know 3dbrew which documents a ton of registers and memory addresses but explains very little about actual progress.

This hack does what's shown in the screenshot:
  • In battle, a Pokéball icon is shown next to the enemy's status if that species is registered as Caught in the Pokédex, like in all later Pokémon games.
  • In battle, moves' (approximate) accuracy and power are shown.
  • In battle, both level and SLP/BRN/PAR/FRZ are shown (if applicable).
  • Some things are moved around on the screen a little to accommodate these changes.


Bugs/Features:
  • The Pokéball icon is shown next to a caught species even in trainer battles. (Which I like, because sometimes you wonder if you have that one, even though you can't catch it right now.)
  • Accuracy is stored as n/255 in the game; this hack displays a percentage, rounded down. So e.g. Horn Drill shows an accuracy of 29% rather than 30%.
  • Power is displayed even for moves that don't use it (non-damaging moves, OHKO moves, etc); the values might be a little strange in those cases.


This patch should work on Red (English version). Possibly it will work on Blue, too. Probably not on Yellow. Try it though and see if any interesting glitches result.

Also, this version makes the player walk faster (including when moving on those stupid spin tiles). As a side effect it disables the spin tiles' animation, but oh well. (The player character still spins, though!)

If you want only the walk faster effect, it can be done with a pair of Game Genie codes:
C9F-E9B-081: Faster movement on spinning tiles. (Also disables spin tiles' animation)
005-D1F-C42: Faster walking and surfing.

Yeah, I always hated that you couldn't see if you had them already! I actually used Gameshark to add a Pokédex to my inventory so I could open it in battle and see what I'd caught. (It causes some graphical glitches, but oh well.) Never quite got why you can't do that normally. They do it in the animé!

Also, since I can't edit the original post for some reason: an addendum to the "bug" list: the screenshot shows colons, but I decided it looked better without and removed them. (Pretty simple to put back if you wanted though.)

It can be done, but each VC game includes an emulator tailored to that game, so it's a crapshoot whether it'll work with other games.

What the heck is textbox type 5 in Pokémon Red?



The stuff behind it (box with numbers) is something I added to test things. Textbox type 5 shows up like this; a 15x18 box with some spaces dropped on its border. No other box has a broken border, and I don't know where I've seen a box matching that size/position in the game.
