My guess is "Blast Off" switches the CPU into double speed (8mhz) mode, which has little effect because most games' main loop looks like:

waitForVblank();
doGameLogic();

and since changing the CPU speed doesn't change the video refresh rate, the game logic still runs at 60hz. The only effects you'd notice are shorter loading times and less lag. I had tested this with a few games by manually hacking a routine into them that switches to double speed mode, and the results are as expected.

It's a bit strange that it actually speeds up SML, but I guess it's not the best programmed game out there. (V1.0 actually turns off the screen during rendering, which the dev manual warns can damage the screen!)

And this is why we don't:


  • Write horrible ugly shitty code that nobody can read

  • Assume code is safe when you can't read it

  • Try to be clever with syscalls

  • Fail to thoroughly test security-critical code



When people say open source is more secure, the whole reason for that is because you can look at the code and see if it's sane. Writing code that nobody can fucking read isn't much better than not publishing the code at all.

I discovered an interesting, completely useless quirk in Pokemon Red/Blue back in the day. It seems when you step off a ladder, you're able to move south for one tile, even if there's something in the way. So in the final dungeon you can step on to a rock, accomplishing nothing. Yay!

Also, the Japanese version of Super Mario 64 has a somewhat well-known bug: if you get over 999 coins, your lives counter bugs out. I investigated and found this was due to a simple copy and paste error; the errant code would have been something like:

if(lives > 100) lives = 100;
if(coins > 999) lives = 999;

Spot the bug. But since lives is an 8-bit signed integer, it discards the high byte and writes 231, or -25. (This also tells us that they probably ignored compiler warnings! Tsk tsk.)
