Wow, so the game works just fine on GB and SGB, but insists on having GBC?

I'm interested in buying this Game Boy flash cart, but I've never heard of the brand or seller before. Does anyone have experience with them?

And while everyone else is playing X/Y, I've just started Black. (I got X, just haven't played it yet... still have White2 to do too...)

It's definitely an improvement in some ways from previous games. Lots of nice little tweaks I like so far:
  • All animations and text are much faster (but text speed still defaults to Medium for some reason, seriously who ever uses that)
  • You don't have to keep selecting Potion over and over to use several of them (the party list stays open until you use the last one or close it)
  • When a Repel expires, you have the option to use another one right there instead of opening the menu for it
  • The Y button menu is very handy; you can register multiple items (and menus like a Pokemon's status screen, item pack, etc)
  • TMs can be reused endlessly (HUGE improvement; no more wasting a good TM)
  • Sort function in item lists
  • Low health alarm is slightly less annoying (but still sucks)
  • No longer asks if you're sure you want to save
  • You no longer have the issue of your starter Pokemon being weak against the first gym, because
  • NPC dialogue is generally a lot better
  • Wide variety of types/species/moves right from the beginning
  • Item finder no longer requires holding a button on the touch screen constantly
  • Items available at shops depend on your number of badges, which is a little odd, but oh well
  • Party menu and in battle screens look super spiffy
  • Sound effects and cries are pretty great
  • Every NOUN and VERB are no longer in ALL CAPS
  • EXP distribution is changed somehow when multiple Pokemon participate (lower levels get a bigger share?)
  • Accuracy debuffs feel nerfed; something that's been hit with 3 Sand Attacks can still actually land hits
  • Music is pretty good
  • Areas are nicely designed; easy to navigate (except the ones where the perspective keeps changing all the damn time) but lots of room to explore too
  • The way abilities are displayed in battle is neat
  • Pretty much entire instruction manual is accessible in the PC (but you have to get to it first, which is a bit silly)
  • Time and battery displayed on touch screen at most times
  • Actual plot
  • Most of the new mons aren't ridiculous looking and actually look like animals like they did in gen 1 and 2
  • Custom messages are hilarious ("I wonder if FIRE is yummy?")

Also some really cool new features: double wild battles, triple/rotation battles, real 3D (very pretty! but sometimes confusing perspectives)

I'm finding the difficulty to be pretty decent. In some ways it really holds your hand (you aren't given hints so much as flat out told what to do; you're quite literally given a Pokemon that can lay waste to the first gym, and Fighting types to destroy the second are easily caught outside), but at times you're made to go through a shitton of grass and trainers to reach some goal, so you can't just turn back and heal (or risk dying on the way back); enemy levels increase at a pretty good rate, and they have a variety of different moves, so if you're not super over levelled you actually end up having to strategize and use items and conserve instead of just spamming the same attack all the time.

It definitely does have its flaws, though - in particular I find the menus rather poorly done, especially compared to HG/SS.
  • Lag sometimes, especially when opening a menu. It manages to delay just enough that you'll think "oh I guess I have to press A to advance the textbox" and press it right when the menu appears and activate it without even seeing it every goddamn time. (Technology borrowed from Google? )
  • Low health alarm still exists, and still keeps going when it doesn't need to, like while your HP is refilling
  • C-gear and online stuff is generally baffling and awkward and a waste of battery power (and they've already shut down the online services ) - seems like they wanted social stuff like 3DS has, but it's specific to this game
  • Menus are often displayed on the top screen while a perfectly good touch screen is sitting there being useless
  • Item menu is particularly bad - half the screen dedicated to a bunch of pictures of bags; you just need to memorize which is which; quantities aren't shown until you select the item (this also applies to shops)
  • Compared to HG/SS, the Move Pokemon menu in the PC is awkward (instead of just listing your party at the side at all times, you have to drag the pokemon to an icon to make the list appear)
  • So much empty space in menus that could be put to use. When you select a Pokemon on the lower screen, the upper screen could be showing its stats and moves (which could certainly fit all in one page), but instead shows nothing at all until you actually open the page (and then the info is split across two pages with a ton of empty space still). While HG/SS had the menu on the touch screen at all times (very convenient), here you have to press a button to pull it up (other times the touchscreen is showing needlessly large wifi "radar" thing, or item finder, or nothing at all). Your trainer info screen is just a giant gym badge display, and you have to go to a second page to actually see useful things like your money.
  • No longer have the L=A option (that was subtle but nice, you could take your other hand off for a sec and keep playing)
  • Camera movement in battle is awkward especially for double battles. When two Pokemon are hit by a status move it zooms into one, shows the animation and textbox, zooms back out, and then repeats this for the other. No reason it couldn't just show both at once, especially since it does this for other animations/effects.
  • Camera is awkward out of battle too; lots of places it looks like you should be able to fit through but nope
  • HM moves still can't be forgotten except at a Move Deleter, even though you could just teach them again if you deleted one you needed
  • For that matter, HMs are still a thing, and still mostly shit moves, so you still need to sacrifice move/Pokemon slots to them
  • Artificial linearity is artificial ("oh I'm not gonna let you go by until you get the gym badge because I'm a cock and I just feel like standing in the way")
  • Sharp rises in opponents' levels means lots and lots and lots of grinding, and there are no good places for it. Choose from a place full of twats that spam sleep/paralyze/poison/confusion/burn moves and/or do stupid amounts of damage so that you need to heal after every 1-2 fights, or a place where the levels are so low it'd take forever. Also, fucking everything knows Detect/Protect.
  • Also fuck Incinerate and Bug Bite; two moves that just destroy any berry you have, at a point in the game when they're in limited supply. That's just a cunt thing to do.
  • No more automatic running shoes; have to hold B all the time, and without them is agonizingly slow
  • Cottonee fucking hacks, how does Hypnosis miss 5 times in a row on multiple occasions
  • Still no way to adjust screen brightness from within the game that I can find
  • NPCs are fucking experts at stepping in front of you as you walk by, I swear they go out of their way to block you

Very enjoyable game, but very tedious too. I feel like I'd enjoy it more if I used a hack for 2x or 3x EXP gain. Probably won't bother to do that though.

Some of those might trigger a reaction if you try to use them as your name, or when Resetti makes you say things.

Yeah, the EXP system is nice when you're a lower level, but reach one of several points where you've beaten all the nearby trainers but the next gym's level is much higher than theirs, and you're back to a grindfest again, that now takes even longer because of the low wild Pokemons' levels...

For a while it seemed like the trend was to add more and more annoying alarms (adding them to Mario games even). Hopefully they'll continue to turn that around.

That noise over the images would be filesystem structures and non-image files (or compressed image files, e.g. JPEG). If you dug around you'd probably find lots of other files from other games, though not likely anything you wouldn't find used in those games.

It's a bit questionable whether it's worth documenting these, because they're not unused resources in the game, but just the remnants of what was on the disk before another game was put on it. More like an overdump than unused data.

It's hardly fair to bash on OoT for being glitchy. It's not like some games where ridiculous "how could they not catch that" bugs occur during normal play and interfere with just trying to play the game. Most of OoT's glitches require precision to exploit. They're not something you could just find by accident if you didn't know about them. Also, most of the clipping bugs are just a natural, unavoidable side effect of the fact that video games are only a crude approximation of a real physical simulation. There are always going to be imperfections, because fixing them would be impractical and the "correct" method would take too much processing power.

Compared to games that can be broken by just saving in a certain spot or entering a certain room, OoT seems pretty solid. (Remember Diamond/Pearl also had a glitch where going upstairs in a certain Pokémon Center would get you trapped?)

What glitch is this? I haven't heard of it before, but I always felt like ever since generation 3, Pokémon games have had fairly poor RNG. (3 was definitely much worse than the others, but it still seems a bit off in later versions.) It seems to get stuck in cycles, where you'll get the same encounter many times in a row, or miss 7 times in a row, etc.

What's supposed to happen is that when you start the game in the Generation 3 games, the frame counter is supposed to be used to seed the RNG. Instead, in Emerald the initial RNG seed is always zero. As such it has an incredibly easily exploitable RNG to be used and was noted even by people not savvy with RNG understanding that it was giving them the same pokemon all the time.
I always thought something like that was going on when I played Ruby. I assume if Emerald has that bug, Ruby/Sapphire do too...

Does Black/White Pokédex not have a search function? That's a pretty basic feature that's been around since G/S.

Also, amusing thing that happened:
  • Unfeazant and Servine in a double battle
  • Unfeazant chooses Air Cutter or something
  • Servine chooses Leaf Tornado
  • Unfeazant goes first, opponent is KO'd, both receive EXP
  • Servine levels up
  • Servine learns Leaf Blade, replacing Leaf Tornado
  • Servine uses Leaf Tornado anyway

The game seemed to handle it just fine. No PP used, no strange effects. Which is a little surprising after all the edge case bugs in previous games.

I loved Bubsy, despite how ridiculously hard it is (one hit kills you the entire game, including fall damage, while you're moving at crazy speeds) because it starred a cat.

That's probably exactly it. "Children" in this context usually just means child nodes of an element, not toddlers. I think your assumptions about the p and m are correct as well.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
