Posted on 04-23-11 04:07:32 PM, in NDS Flashcart - R4 SDHC ultra Link
There are about 10 different versions of the R4 flashcart which lead to me almost getting an aneurism yesterday when I wanted to install a new firmware version. Official updates to my particular cart stopped Sept 2010 and even when that update came out it really didn't support the new games of that time.

Suffice it to say, Im stuck playing only old DS games. Knowing that there are so many of these other much more updated Firmware options for R4 TTmenu, YSmenu, Wood R4; there is no reason for me to settle for my old ass version.

Now unfortunately, either my particular cart is extremely stupid/rare/I don't know but for the life of me I could not get any of these versions to actually play a game. The closest I got was with Wood R4, the UI and menu all showed up correctly like in those various You Tube tutorials, but when choosing a game, the thing gives me a error message.

So I ask you, anyone have this particular cart and have a non-official, more frequently updated firmware running that allows you to play newer games such as Golden Sun Dark Dawn or Dragon Quest 9.

This is exactly what I have. Notice it has SDHC logo, it has the www.r4ultra.com line.

I'm thinking this is considered a "clone" regardless I have tried using version for clones and non clones with no luck either way.

Yeah there are couple other forums dealing with flashcarts. But wow...they are cluttered, unreadable messes that never really address my problem. I'd rather ask here first.
Thanks.

(Whether backtracking in itself is a good thing or not is irrelevant.)

They also add a bit more personality to battles, as with most other RPGs, the enemies you fight in-between bosses are little more than minions and monsters with nothing to say and are nearly impossible to relate to. The trainers in Pokemon, however, are like micro-boss battles, keeping things interesting in those long gaps between mini-bosses and regular bosses. (Sure, the way they work in Pokemon doesn't really make sense, but that could be said about almost anything fun/useful in videogames.)

Therefore, I would really like to see more RPGs use enemies like Pokemon Trainers, as they have the potential to turn a horrid grind into a fun adventure.

Could not have said it better myself. Even though I totally know the feeling the video refers to, sometimes you really don't feel like fighting these trainers all lined up waiting to ambush you, I do agree that in the end, trainer battles are a good thing.

Lets face it, pokemon games are the easiest RPG's you will ever play (That does NOT make it a bad game), so these trainers with slightly stronger, more varied pokemon are nice brain checks and break up the monotony of wild grass battles. They are nice exp sources too.

Yeah, I tried like every version of that already. Think I'm better of just getting a SuperCard DSTwo Portable SNES and GBA functionality makes it better than any updated firmware I ever manage to get working on my R4 anyway.

I think it was bad ass that we got to play as Star Fox on foot outside of his vehicle. The game might not have been the best ever made, but I like that they tried something different. Star Fox with Zelda type gameplay...how can a game developer not take that chance.

As for Perfect Dark Zero however..easily one of my top 5 biggest disappointments ever. I say Banjo Kazzooie Nuts and Bolts was actually not bad at all, but definitely not great. (I feel bad for still not 100% that game, maybe I'll revisit it in the summer.)

LOL. I'm like ribbon hero?... Microsoft Word?..what is going on here...

Had no clue the menu tab things were referred to as ribbons. Hadn't had a good derp moment like that in a good while thanks. Also..that's pretty freaking useful. Be nice if they had an Access one, I need to learn the more advanced features for that one.

Holy balls, its SNN. Long time no post. Although I kinda wish you hadn't posted your level. Now I wanna use that and make a level too, when I should be studying as well. Actually, I felt the same way couple months ago when I stumbled upon DahrkDaiz's SMB3 editor, Reuben. I felt compelled to play with it and make a level, never could figure out how to actually export my level and play it though.

Great work as always.

You can never really get up to speed because the worlds are too cramped; the one place big enough to really stretch your wings is the one place you can't because it's Showdown Town.

The enemies are more petty annoyance than threat, and few even work as an obstacle.

Despite all this, I love the underlying concept, and would love to see a non-BK sequel to it with these issues rectified.

Listen to this man, he speaks truth. Nothing worse then building your ultimate racing/flying/assault/carrier contraption for a vehicle, only to then run into wall after wall towards your goal in a horrible clumsy mess. I am now remembering why I stopped playing...the Terrarium of Terror. That place literally gave me claustrophobia it was so cramped, and confusing and freaking annoying to do any missions.

Only that first world, Nutty Acres, had open skies and fields to move about freely. Freaking raised my hopes high, only to smash em with every subsequent world. Except, Banjo Land, the music ALONE makes that level legendary.

A non-BK sequel to a BK game would be kinda weird, but I agree that the concept works. Build your own highly customizable vehicle, explore what should be HUGE OPEN levels, while doing a buncha varied missions and collecting a balanced number of collectables.

A shame that this concept WITH the BK IP ultimately failed because of said problems.

I can't decide if the fact that I have no idea whats happening in the chaos of that trailer video is a good thing or a bad thing. Hehe, naw I know its a good thing. But the more I think about this game, and its obvious Minecraft inspirations, the more I kinda loose interest.

I am afraid the sand boxiness of this game will get old just like it did with Minecraft. Still, the fact that there are a variety of different 'weapon' types and not different 'wool' types...makes this more a game-y game than Minecraft, which is a good thing IMO.

Just wanted to pop in and say...

Grappling hook

Yeah, its bad ass.

Bad Ass as in first time you play Ocarina of Time and get the hookshot bad ass.
Grappling Hook = 3 Iron Chains + Hook. Think I got the hook from a jar. You can make chains from Iron Bars.

Has anyone crafted any laser swords or ray guns, like from the trailer? Having a hell of time finding a comprehensive craftables list.

I see that Rift is the weekend deal on Steam, 33% off. Does anyone here play Rift? I have been off WoW for a good while now and have been getting a MMO itch lately. Terraria and Dwarfs!? have kept me busy enough, but I don't think I can hold off much longer :p

Can anyone recommend Rift? I have been watching buncha Rift VS WoW videos and it does indeed look at least as good as WoW, just wondering if its worth it to start a new game.

Also, if possible, try to start the encounter with Skeletron as soon as night starts. Its a long fight if you solo him. Took me pretty much the entire night, not a hard fight if your equipped with full molten armor and the Blue Flail, but long. He will simply disappear mid fight when the sun comes up. At least he did prior to this recent update.

Also, whats the deal with the rocket boots man? I seriously almost have crafted or obtained every armor set and weapon in the game and STILL have not found the damn rocket boots. I wanna use some of my mana for once.

Yeah, well technically I think this stems from flight controls right? Pulling "back" (down) on the stick makes the plane's nose point up and go up; while pushing "forward"(up) on the stick flies it down. Why this was introduced and has become a staple in FPS where you are controlling a person eludes me.

Regardless, yes I simply cannot play any FPS game without jumping into the menu and enabling "Invert Y Axis" on. My thumb muscle memory is pretty much set in stone now, pressing up looks down and pressing down looks up.

I too grew up on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, I can't remember but, were those controls Y inverted by default? Modern FPS normally don't have Y inverted by default.

For starters, that was a hell of a good idea and hell of a good implementation. An actual useful hack that contributes to more fun, kudos to you.

As for a host, if you make an account you can add it to the Romhacking.net database. Seems to be the most obvious place where it will get some exposure, you can even make a news article about it that gets posted to front page. Been awhile since I've uploaded anything, but the stuff I did got noticed and is still available some 5 years later..Shameless Plug :p

Yeah, this batch is not as good as previous bundles. Feels like "forced" bundle. Cogs and VVVVV are in my opinion the only descent games of the bunch. Will admit I did not give as much on this bundle as previous.

Having said all that..yeah these indie game are still better than most of the big budget, huge developer team, crap games out there today.

Indeed. A little on the bullet hell side of things which I am not a big fan of, but still a very polished game that brightens up this bundle quite a bit in my opinion. Definitely want to unlock that chase camera option though, makes the game look 10 times more bad ass.

They apparently have added a free version of Minecraft to the bundle. Not that it matters to most users of this board whom most likely have it already, still its cool.

Wait wait wait. Can you actually play on battlenet against other people who have bought full version? Hell, even if you can only play against people on your friend list that is freakin bad ass. brb reading FAQ..

Q. Can I play a match with other players who have the full game? Can I create a match with a friend?
A. Yes. StarCraft II players with a full game license can join a custom game on the Starter Edition maps to play with Starter Edition players. You may play matches with friends by simply creating a custom game on a trial map and using the game invite functionality to invite friends to the game.

Q. Can a player with a full game create a game on a Starter Edition map?
A. Yes. If a player with a full license wants to create a custom game that can be joined by a Starter Edition player, he or she should select one of the maps marked by the special symbol.

Awesome, can totally play SC2 with all my poor fiends now

No kidding. This is the bundle that just keeps on giving. I refute my original opinion and am calling this bundle just as good if not better than the others. Steel Storm, Atom Zombie and Yet It Moves(which has grown on me a lot) have bumped this bundle up a few notches.

Hooray for indie games and their developers!

For me personally, the difficulty bump is not a problem at all and I even welcome it. But that is only because I'v had my molten armor set complete and the fire sword (forgot its name) since 1.01.

A new player in 1.06 will probably find the game waaay harder. Getting to hell is harder with so many more enemies now. Hellstone ore is a heck of alot harder to find and mine now too. And crafting the armors (all armors) is now more involved and time consuming. Potion cooldowns and better enemy AI add to the difficulty in general too.

I'm not complaining, just noting how the game was easier and crafting the best armors was easier and so I (and most other early adopters) got very well equipped very early on.

On a side note, I have tons of weapons/armors/accessories that I'm just hoarding for no good reason. I would love to trade some of it for some green dye/jungle seeds. Where are you all playing?

I did exactly that after I was getting charged like $20.00 a month for "data usage". I had never used any of the internet features on my phone, yet somehow still was getting charged for it. I think it was the phone's pre-installed programs trying to update themselves or some crap. I of course tried explaining this to them (AT&T) but they weren't having it, fine.

Called em back up , asked them to block this phone from internet network, boom no more data usage charges. The times on my text messages are wrong, but at least phone still does what I need it to do...call people.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
