speaking of technical oddities... the DS has a whole system for mapping VRAM banks, and said system technically allows banks to overlap. I was curious as to how it handles overlaps.

you'd think that if you map multiple banks to the same address, it'll either apply a priority order, or map only the last bank mapped. you'd be wrong. it actually maps the banks together.

which means that writing within the concerned address space writes to all the banks mapped there. reading is even more fun, it returns a logical OR of the values from each bank.

this is going to be a whole lot of fun to emulate in melonDS.

oh, yes, quite thrilling! //sarcasm...lol

yeah, that sounds like fun stuff.

And, alright, messin' with ps1 port of viewpoint. Much as I honestly dislike it compared to original neo-geo version, I want graphics. Was thinking i'd be dealing with models, textures, shaders. Nope, tons of weirdBPP and split into pieces like original sprite tiles, o...k... (and prob why apparently this port has shoddy performance! i haven't actually played it, never will, just read reviews and watched vids)

gl with melonDS!

well, cool/interesting...
There's another piece of music I'm curious about:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKFJx-FQ86w

from what i can tell, sounds a LOT like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wgbC9mXq2s

At least from what I can tell? They're similar at the very least.

But, what I cannot find is the actual date this second one was released. Google search says 2016, but that's from the latest album. This video is dated 2011, and this particular track has appeared even before then.

I'm pretty sure this ALSO plays in the one hour vid, at the beginning...

Let's tack-on BSoD and fatal windows error that potentially suggest hardware is starting to fail...

Been going since sometime around 3:30-ISH PM trying to cram as much as possible onto my only empty 16GB flash drive. Dear GOD is that a slow process. And there's still 5GB of pictures and an entire installed fonts folder I'd like to back-up. (the pictures, especially... cannot be replaced if lost!)

And due to this dire situation, ALL my plans in terms of programming and playing games today have been completely screwed-over

AWESOME!

I've been watching their entire line-up, minus ...whatever... they tack-on at the end since it's a re-run of ...whatever... after it's run through the whole thing

I must say, One Piece drives me absolute BONKERS with the re-caps. The "Gold Roger's dying words" thing also has been done to death....IMO. I sometimes wonder why I stay-up till... I think it's like 4 for me, (cuz US MST timezone), because it feels like 75% of each episode is "this happened 10 episodes ago, now you're up to speed" ,and I could skip several episodes before I actually NEED to see one to progress the story very far.

Everything else in the line-up leaves me genuinely excited for the next episode, and the wait for the next week sometimes is UN-bearable... but, I manage.

Maybe it's just me (or something's wrong with me), but I see no issue with Naruto...

I think I also prefer the wait/break between watching the episodes of all these anime, though, because the plots are so complex, and the episode counts are enormous. The truth is, binge-watching actually wears me down real fast. My sister got me some of the InuYasha seasons and I haven't even opened them yet. I haven't even watched the whole series, either, just bits and pieces, spread across beginning, middle, end. I think I've seen all the movies since I was 10 or so (I was forbidden from playing LOZ since first grade, but they showed me InuYasha, ok.... ?) , but I can't remember many details about them. It's been too long.

I've had many anime recommended to me, but most I've never started watching, and the rest I quit for one reason or another, or only actually watched the one time they were presented to me.

Very calmy, I'll quote enough of my conversation to set some context/clarity:
me: " I suppose if necessary, I could provide one of my emails. However, I don't want those given to just anyone."
them: "Sorry I have to respect privacy for other people"
Likewise if I have to respect others' privacy, they have to respect me waiving or offering to waive my own. As I said, I respected their choice. I'm not obligated to like it, nor forbidden to complain about it.
I will not ever bring this up again, my goal wasn't to have an argument over such a petty matter. It was to state I TRIED investigating a 'lead' (which is most likely a hoax, IMO) and got stone-walled. I don't appreciate the answers I was given, and was curious if anyone else has had similar experiences, or maybe did get ...SOMETHING... I wasn't demanding ANYTHING. Please do not assume that's what I was doing. I cannot be bothered to try forcing them to cave, besides it's against my personal values to do so.

These are not 100% unrelated, as the previous context for this was from someone (not me!) who was thinking of making a fan-game, and is still learning the basics of how to animate things. a DP re-make would probably not look too good if the models were animated purely with matrices, because there would be disjoint geometry and the likes. Static meshes with bones/joints, or alternate sets of vertices would've made more sense. Yes, that was a bit overly verbose, but the previous context was about someone making a fan-game and needing advice. Not entirely out of place.

Now, since the other individual who was making a fan-game seems to have disappeared, I'll return to my previous objective, which was sorting the wealth of information or links found within this thread. I'm not replying to, or adding anything else unless it directly concerns re-creating/leaking/restoring the game.

Speaking of which:
I think I mentioned earlier (or unknowingly re-posted, that happens sometime here) some information/resources I've found.
So, I kinda know where the big marketing strat binder is. Apparently the individual who had it gave it to his friend. That's the most recent information I could find.

Secondly, there's a decently sized media archive out there, but it only really contains videos, concept arts, and scans of magazines. It doesn't seem to contain any of the assets recovered from ANY version of SFA. None the less, I thought it was pretty neat. I downloaded it once, but my dad's "desktop cleaning" took-care of that. I could share the link, I think it's alright, I'm just worried (despite it's already been quite publicly shared) of getting it taken-down because Nintendo/Rare/MS see it.

Third, I was thinking of going and backing-up some of the online pages/articles/sites that exist about/for DP. Can never be too careful. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

EDIT:
oww... my head
I've numbered each entry on my list, now putting them into a few general categories...
Think giving self headache, tho... there's so much information to sift-through (and I'm sorting by my tag notes, not the post content)

EDIT2:
160/~200 things roughly sorted...
updated list coming soon (in another post, cuz it's a textwall)

My list of links...
Now with numbers, and category lists appended.
I think I've used my brain as much as I can stand today.
If anyone could review all these, it would be greatly appreciated.
I probably made some errors, or didn't include stuff in the proper category, I was running halfway on auto-pilot here, and also was just rushing this part because I kinda want to get it over with. I would be somewhat surprised if I didn't make at least one mistake.

Multi-quoting would be useful.

The ability to delete PM's after they've become irrelevant would also be a useful feature.
I was going to try cleaning my PM's a while back, and then realized it cannot be done.

I also have a hard time finding certain things (or re-finding them) because there's no search feature

Those are just a few 'minor' suggestions

Saving is definitely a good idea.
Will that include save states? (or have them added sometime in the future?)

Anyways, good luck.
I'll definitely be watching this closely.
I personally don't have *too* many issues with Desmume, but I agree it's overdue for an update.
I'm also very much not impressed with that thread you linked, I'm sorry you had to go through that.
If there were a reliable alternative, it might make me drop Desmume cold-turkey.

I'm curious, what types of input device/hardware, or schemes/setups do you like?

This is inspired by a few things, one note-able one is tablet commercials bragging about not having that "bulky, awkward" keyboard, or the ability to move it "out of the way"

From my perspective, both as a programmer, and a gamer, I LOVE that keyboard, and it's not in my way. Oh, quite contrary to what those tablet PC ads say, I want MORE keys!

Every keyboard until I dealt with laptops, including the one on the computer I'm using right now has/had a keyboard with the usual QWERTY layout, F1-F12 , numpad, print screen, lock, and some auxiliary feature (this one has 8 shortcut keys at the top, but those actually never get used, i think they're actually disabled, anyways) My laptop has the fun system of pressing extra keys just to do things like press printscreen, and truth be told: I haven't gotten used to this, and generally hate it. I also had experiences where because some keys are missing/re-configured (like numpad) I cannot use some options in certain games/programs.

I prefer mice over touch pads and touch screens. I have a wireless USB mouse for my laptop, and I press the button above the touch pad every time I use that computer, because I cannot stress how much I HATE those things. I've contemplated a USB keyboard, also...but a game controller, external hub, or video capture card takes priority over that.

game controllers are great for games, I may also look into the emulation of the analogue stick for my games as it turns-out, the 'standard' approach to WASD/arrows/d-pad is kinda wrong, or at least quite static. It also would work wonders if I made a mobile game that doesn't consist SOLELY of "swipe this, touch that!" (and I probably would, the current trends disgust me that people can make millions on re-skinning literally the same basic game formula 20 times...)

Gimmicky things like the wiimote I have mixed feelings about. My only experiences with it have been Wii Sports, and that was abysmal. I'd rather go to the local golf course than suffer through Wii Sports completely screwing me over any day. The Wiimote seems like an interesting input device, but I haven't had a good experience with it any time it's 'true potential' was unleashed.

Those are just my tidbits.
How's everyone else think?

@2Tie

yeah, I've only ever used controllers with an actual console. (or when they're integrated, like those plug-n-play's that break...)

I don't think my brother in law has Skyward Sword, not sure why... I'd have to ask him or my sister some time. They might and I just never noticed, or it was hidden from me.

@Rick
alright.
I've contemplated getting an actual controller for some of the emulated games (or more advanced PC games, if they support it). Any controller as advanced as the n64 and higher REALLY doesn't map well to a keyboard, and some computer games have too many hotkeys. Luckily, not all n64 games actually use the whole controller, and I don't play too many computer games that make me regret the keyboard control layout!

I couldn't agree more.
You forgot this one though:
"I AM TRYING TO TYPE, NOT CLICK ON/SCROLL SHIT!
Yeah, I don't think there's a single touchpad in existence that actually works better than a mouse.
They're always acting up, and you have to pose your hands in a special way to not trip them up while you're typing something, or just resting your hands on the keyboard. Then whenever you actually need to use them, they do ENTIRELY the opposite of what you need/want. A ball mouse that hasn't been cleaned in a while is actually more reliable...

I know that feeling. "I won't add/consider this yet cuz it'll break everything that came before it"

np!

For my tastes, it'd have to support everything I've actually bothered to get a ROM for, although the ideal emulator would support every game...XD (gl with that, I hear that manages to be difficult)

Some specifics:
Bionicle Heroes
Solatorobo: Red the Hunter (IDK if you've dealt with this topic yet, but I'm pretty sure this has vertex lighting/shading, or whatever it's called... I noticed certain colors were applied when previewing the NDS-formatted model that the exported .obj doesn't seem to have)
Lego Battles
Lego Battles: Ninjago

There are others, but these are the only ones I could see myself actually trying to finish for now.

Honestly, you lost me on on that technical talk. I just don't understand low-level computing nearly well enough yet.

Well, like I said, I wish you luck, and I'll keep an eye on everything. I don't really have much else to say right now.

Started Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past last night... online... (I have my reasons)
I decided I hate NESBox, it can be so friggin' slow (or rather, firefox is becoming an unusable box of lag...) After getting tired of random freezes, I decided to just download ZSNES and the ALttP ROM when I finally got home from running errands today...

Managed to re-do all the progress I made last night fairly quickly. (in fact, many times faster than I initially had made it)

So far completed the first two dungeons!

Consulted the walkthrough for four things:
1. lag caused me to skip explanations
2. a simple block puzzle actually managed to stump me
3. a relatively simple puzzle still managed to stump me
4. Didn't feel like doing trial-and-error on a boss that took me like 30 re-tries to even REACH, but my guesses were fairly accurate

I just want to beat one of these old games with minimal/NO walk-through usage...
But, I can live with using it on maybe 5-10% of the game... ideally less

So far I'd say I am doing alright with that...

What I mean, though is, is there was a time they would've been at their mercy of their customers. Now these damn corporations have corrupted the government and brainwashed the consumers so thoroughly, they could probably get away with murdering you if they had a good enough excuse.

In a proper economy, this shit would land them filing for bankruptcy when they lose too many 'valued customers' to keep money flowing into the company. But, we've seen all the highly unethical and/or illegal stuff large companies get away with these days...

Anyways, wages do not matter if there's nothing to draw them from. Screwing your customers over like that is a move that is supposed to make you lose customers, thus lose money, and thus have to close when you don't have enough/any of it. But, large corporations are constantly finding ways to get out of these, especially any "utility"...

And hmm, fiber?
Supposedly my parent's ISP is working on installing that in a few places, but not currently where we live, I don't think...

Posted on 02-15-17 05:40:41 AM, in What are your other usernames? Link

WIP

I have a variety of other usernames, one of which I've recycled a few times.

However, due to a few certain dramatic events within the last couple years, I've chosen to keep a few of my various aliases completely isolated from each other. This one in fact was created with the sole purpose of avoiding any drama if other members of vg-resource were on this site, specifically, those I've clashed swords with. Whether it's worked, IDK... it's not an entirely air-tight plan.

I also created this username as an enigma, and am kinda surprised either no one has guessed or confronted me upfront about what it is. I'll change it either when I get bored, or when someone cracks it.

Now, hopefully without blowing my cover:
I've used 7145hf1 for MineCraft, and my mcforums username is (which I've kinda technically exposed here since the MineCraft thread I started) Gentle_Stream, which...well...should be obvious on my avatar there what it's for.

I actually put maybe too much thought into my usernames, each and every one has a meaning

Now, I have contemplated sharing my many other user names or aliases, but can I trust people here to not go using that against me? Maybe I'm just over-paranoid, but there's a lot of damage one could do to my life/reputation if they knew where to look, I've thought as far ahead as to what can be done, but my only slightly reliable line of defense is to remain 'anonymous' to this community. My IRL identity is kept private nearly everywhere for similar reasons.

Oh, I suppose my LD identity is fine, too... QualityCatGames, basically the working title for me or my 'studio' or... whatever as a game developer. I don't really like the ring to it, the message of it I hope is more than clear: no rushing half-broken crap out that conforms solely to trends. But yeah, branding I guess you could say. It's also a nod to my favorite animal, but that should also be fairly self-explanatory as well.

Hope I'm not overstepping bounds or anything, since I am adding new stuff (i think?) to the discussion:

Pokemon games (or most of them) aren't fun.
I find them to be way too tedious, which is the main reason I have yet to complete one.

MineCraft 1.9 "the Combat Update" actually brings some very welcome changes to the game play, including the weapon cooldowns, excluding some very extreme PvE circumstances that you kinda have to be careless to get yourself in. I don't think they've impacted me much, as being somewhat of a pussy, I don't get up close and personal with mobs and try to spam-click them. I also hated PVP because of the spam-clicking. I'm glad it's gone.

MineCraft is not "ruined" every update.

MineCraft Beta 1.7.3 is NOT the holy grail of all MineCraft releases. I had some experiences with it, and all I'd say maybe was alright is terrain generation. Overall, the newer mechanics are more refined, and the new blocks are quite welcome. I also never really hated the hunger bar, it's not that huge of a deal except in the first few days, primarily. (especially now you can create auto-farms that a single full production run will most likely last you the rest of your natural life, considerably longer than you will play on that world, or likely MineCraft, for that matter) Anyways, I didn't enjoy 1.7.3 all that much. I only played it because a friend was only able to play that version on his computer. I hated it. Not just because of having less blocks, that I could ignore. But in general, the gameplay, and some glitches, SUCKED...

Sorry most of these are MineCraft, I've invested a lot of time/interest in that game, so I have a lot of opinions about it.

Windows 2000
Windows XP

I have a laptop with... *ominous music* ... Vista
friend got it for me.

Hasn't given me many issues, other than can overheat easily, and it has unresolved BSODs.
But, internet issues mean I can't use it as a primary right now

So, I'm still using XP, my mom's to be specific.
It's getting harder to manage this, I'm amazed modern programs are called "fast".
Only cuz "everyone" has a multi-core CPU and legendary GPU on their rig, and the latest OS, it doesn't like cost a couple THOUSAND (excluding upgrades and re-purchasing software) to replace computers every couple years, nope...

Firefox is getting slower and slower (ofc, they're also becoming Chrome 2.0... I'll be seeking new browser soon) ,more and more programs no longer support XP, and games are shifting to using GL in some shape or form, or even Vulkan, and that's costing me MANY opportunities to play them.

I will say I don't think any of these new computers could be used 15 or so years after being purchased, either. Besides being 'obsolete' , i highly expect every component to fail long before then.

I do feel the older OSes lend more freedom to the end-user. I am sure in the future I'll be somehow getting Win10. I absolutely dread this, and I can't WAIT to go through and literally hack my own computer just to disable a bunch of crap I never agreed to even having installed or enabled. Jumping through hoops to develop for it should also be exciting.

I also have heard not so great things about Windows 2000, but I never actually had a problem with it myself, other than it becoming obsolete.

I suppose consider yourself lucky it didn't catch fire or explode or something?
Pretty sure overloading stuff like that *can* cause such events.

How come you didn't have the intended one in the first place, though? Did the laptop already lack it when you acquired it? Or did that also fail?

EDIT:
Working on a flash game porting project of mine and just spent probably half an our or more reading about the difference between an Interface and and Abstract Class, which also isn't entirely defined thanks to Java 8. Alriiiiight... Gotta do some other stuff, then I'm back to my original goal today, which is understanding at least partially the save system. (and probably dumping the .sol file to JSON or plaintext)

Why do I always overlook some detail?
Or yeah, I guess "it came with it, didn't check" also flies...
Same would apply for mine, I don't actually know if it's the intended one... I assume it is, I might check that. In general, laptops have a rep for ...bad things happening, especially fires
