Posted on 07-11-13 10:00:53 PM, in New Category Discussion: Prerelease Materials Link
I've mentioned it on the wiki before but I'm really looking forward to this category being added. I definitely agree with a quality over quantity approach - we don't need to show every prerelease screenshot or video, just the best. I wouldn't mind having separate archive downloads with all of the materials, though. For example, I have like 130 unwatermarked GoldenEye screenshots presumably straight from Rare, but only a few things are shown which aren't present in the final game in some form. I think all of these screenshots have historic value, though, and I'd hate to see them drop off the web when the next GE/Rare fansite decides not to renew their hosting.

I do think that if the only screenshot of a scrapped feature is a blurry, watermarked mess, it should be allowed anyway. Documenting the content is more important than looking pretty, and as long as the article is well written, having an ugly shot is better than not covering the content at all. (See the stage 4-5 shot in the CV Bloodlines article) Same goes for videos, I've got a prerelease Perfect Dark vid with a music track that later got reused in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, but it's watermarked and kinda shaky since it was captured with a camera at a trade show. I definitely want that vid on the site because of the unused music and the fact that it shows the game very early in development. To my knowledge, it's the only video with this music, and it disappeared from the internet for a while until I got a copy of it from someone and rehosted it.

This sounds good, will it appear on the Bob? Oddities could be lumped in with it, since this kind of info is already in some articles as oddities (SOTN and FF4, for example).

-edit-

Expect me to bug you about what is/isn't allowed in this category if it does happen, though.

We're not really hurting for revenue, but TCRF doesn't pay for itself (and the money made from ads can be reused to advertise for TCRF at other places, too).

I think I'm going to agree on the leaderboard ad being more annoying than the current sidebar ad or one at the bottom. I'd have to see it incorporated into the layout, though, it might not be as bad as I'm thinking. I know the LP archive uses them and they don't bother me there.

I'm actually not a fan of not showing the ad when logged in, though. I'm too broke to donate, but I love TCRF, so I'd like you to be getting ad revenue from me at least. Maybe make it so ads go away for donators?

... oh, speaking of easter egg, supposedly pressing space(in the PC version at least, which is jump) in the first version of the game on the Stage Clear screen made this appear. It got patched out, sadly.

Throw that into a Revisional Differences section, too funny not to document (duckument?).

I'd like to see Final Fantasy IV and Perfect Dark featured. I added a shitload of content to both of them; neither's entirely complete yet, still more to add, but I think they're both on par with the other featured articles.

What gets me about Perfect Dark is the sheer number of unused stage-specific props. It's like the guys doing the mission setups never communicated with the artists doing the modeling. I suppose it's possible they simply didn't like some of the props, a few of them are pretty ugly or simply don't match the aesthetics of the places they were intended for, like the CI furniture, but others fit in perfect and still go unused. Given that they were still making setup changes ~2 weeks before the final build, I can't help but wonder if they just ran out of time to swap out the generic props for the intended ones.

There are also the completely baffling things like CIA Agent character, which is only used as a civilian in Chicago, but obviously wasn't intended for that role originally. They could've stripped off the badge, renamed the character, and no one would've been the wiser.

The thought's crossed my mind; I know SubDrag interviewed Duncan Botwood a few years back, but didn't really touch on PD all that much. I could try to get in touch with him and see if he'd be willing to answer some questions/direct me to someone who could. Honestly, I'm always a bit nervous contacting someone out of the blue like that, even though I know he's been willing to do interviews with fans in the past.

You got a link to that Conker commentary? I remember hearing about the possibility of it happening, didn't know it ever did. Never played Conker BFD, but I'd still be interested in watching it.

Thanks for the link Celice, I've only had a chance to watch the first two videos so far but it's been great to hear the devs being so candid about the game.

The leak just makes you wonder how many different versions of episode 3 Valve has in their offices. So much was cut from the base game, despite being up to par with what made it to the final version, and most of what is still there isn't being used how it was originally intended to be.

Missing Information is a mod that tries to rebuild the original game design based on fixed up copies of the leaked files ported to a newer version of Source and some original content. The wiki has some of the leak documented:

http://tcrf.net/Proto:Half-Life_2_(PC)

But that article could definitely use a rewrite, and there is a lot missing from it.

Yeah I use modified executables through Steam all the time and have never had any trouble. There are a lot of executable replacements on the official Steam forums and now in guides, too, you'd think those would get pulled down if anyone had a problem with them. (If anything, Valve's support staff is probably happy they're there, given how well-supported some of those games are by their developers now.)

What's the stance on adding things from source code? Jaguar Doom has an alternate block of end text (that ended up being used in the PSX version), but it doesn't look like it was compiled into the ROM.

There are things in the PC Doom source, too, like plans to have half-assed sliding doors (probably for the Wolfenstein levels) via animated textures on two-sided lines. The article mentions Automap Asteroids, which wasn't even developed, so I assume it's cool to add this stuff?

Edit: Another thing, what about content that isn't in a shipped game, but has been released by the developers? Like John Romero's original Quake E2M6 start?

I can't find any info about a FF4 sample version online, which makes me think it's probably just the 1.0 version, especially given the finalized retail packaging. 1.0's pretty uncommon, but it's probably not worth bidding on.

Placeholder tiles can be interesting sometimes. But for the most part, I agree that articles shouldn't be created just to cover them. Pretty much every other game I've looked into has placeholders of some sort. Unless they pad them out with something interesting (the smiley face, for example), I don't see much point in including them. Same thing with leftover Japanese fonts, unless those fonts differ from the original in some way, which would indicate the localizers worked with prototype/revised content.

This thread hasn't been touched in ages, but it'd be nice to get some more opinions on this stuff:

http://tcrf.net/GoldenEye_007_(Nintendo_64)#Multiplayer_Oddities

I personally don't think it has any reason for being in the article. These empty sections are just the result of reusing the same backgrounds and collision as the solo missions - multiplayer is just an alternate setup for them. All of this stuff is there in solo, the only remotely interesting thing is the little bit of Streets in Archives that the end camera doesn't really show.

Even if it stays, the screenshots all need to be retaken.

Posted on 12-30-13 12:36:11 AM, in Chex Question Link
So I just now found that the original Chex Quest levels were revamped in Chex Quest 3. I'm not too familiar with the game, so I never noticed these changes while playing. Gez points some out in this thread at the ZDoom forums:

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37866&start=120#p735498

(scroll down for overhead map comparisons - E2M2 is the only one with significant layout changes)

I'm mostly bringing this up because I don't know if these changes would be allowed to be documented on the wiki or not. There is a Chex Quest article and it does already mention Chex Quest 3, but CQ3 is, for all intents and purposes, a fan game...the fan being the game's original designer! It runs under ZDoom instead of the original engine, and in addition to the new episode, includes ports of CQ1 and 2's levels.
