It makes me wonder why they made it harder outside of Japan. You need more EXP to gain levels in the English version, too.
Doesn't the Japanese version round all of your levels to the lowest one when you run out of lives? As in, if you have attack 5, defense 5, life 2, if you restart, it'd be attack 2, defense 2, life 2?
If so, it probably balances out, give or take.

That seems to be a common theory. I personally suspect that it may be more because SMB2j is basically just a harder version of SMB1, but I'm not sure if anyone actually involved in the process said one way or the other.
