Through most of high school I had dialup so I made good use of the internet there. It got annoying near the end of junior year and became near useless senior year but I had DSL by then.
The content filter at first was a mild annoyance. It blocked obvious stuff like myspace, porn, warez, etc but started to get much worse, as far as blocking google at one point. It just sounded like a bunch of inept IT guys moved some slider up to "Maximum" without any idea of the effects. The computers had windows 2000 but had some pretty annoying policies by default. same old no right click, locked desktops (with 00FF00 by default and a wordart "STUDENT" icon in the middle, though my account got switched to using the default blue somehow.), no cmd.exe, etc. during junior year it was found out you can log in to the computer's local administrator account without a password but that got fixed later on. During senior year, the computers had deep freeze and content filtering was absolutely brutal, but you could still access disks, which I took advantage of to play zsnes in class on occasion, in 256x224 DR WIN so nobody could see it for at least a little while. |
