Old Desktop crashes under load grrrr

Hard drive: none, now.
Optical drive: shitty Liteon DVD burner that opens halfway then closes if i don't pull it the rest of the way.
Screen: was a 19" LCD (1280x1024) and 42" plasma (1920x1080) but they're on the new computer now
Other: floppy drive, used to have a TV card that i sold.
Software: Gentoo Linux, xfce4, Firefox, mplayer, gmail, k3b/wodim/cdrdao
Tablet rarely used... but on it now for reasons
