IRC. AIM. Twitter.

Being able to talk to people instantly, and have them respond instantly; being able to keep up with forum posts and respond to them with a conversation in an IRC channel; having friends who were more easily reachable via IRC and IM programs than a forum.

Forums are, at least to me, places where you can talk to other like-minded people about topics that interest you. These days, forums are just less efficient in fulfilling that purpose.

They still have their purpose, and some things are much better done on a forum than any other method. Still, in general, they just aren't useful for what they were before.
