This is weird.
I was checking out all the officially released GBA games that use the PocketNES emulator last night due to some comments a friend made about Capcom Classics Collection. I thought the game might have some leftovers from the original emulator, but couldn't find any unused text or graphics in a tile editor or VisualBoy Advance's tile / map viewers.
So I loaded the Hudson Best Collection series and noticed that volumes 1 through 3 have... an unused Koei (my bad, not Tecmo) copyright in the title screen data. It gets loaded in the game - it's just not used. I'm not entirely certain about Hudson and Koei's relationship in these. I have to dig around game forums to find out.
I found these last night so I didn't add them, but I'll be doing so later today.

Yep. It's encased in a "polybag" , but that's to be expected for anyone who uses that Video Game Authority rating system to see how good a prototype looks (a Zelda 'prototype' discovered a while back came with a mear-mint boxed copy of the retail game encased like this EB proto too). It outright says on the cartridge that's a final version too.
It's sealed inside a dumb plastic brick (or sometimes a thin plastic box), similarly to some older comics and trading cards are. Then they stuck that plastic brick inside a plastic baggie. But still. You can't get to the game easily, if at all, and if you do want to remove it from that worthless plastic jail, it might damage the game itself.
It's beyond stupid.

I ran that text through Google Translate. It has a code for a Debug Menu in Harukaze Sentai V Force, and that game also has wallpapers in LZH format on the CD. Neat!
"Harukaze Sentai · V Force"
Debug menu
To free cursor mode simulation Game
However, while holding down "L, R, X, Z" and "START"
When you press, debug menu will appear.
The experience does not fit in this "Stage Clear"
Please note.
-Hidden wallpaper
CD1: "\ WALL" directory> "VF_BMP01.LZH"
CD2: "\ WALL" directory> "VF_BMP02.LZH"
CD3: "\ WALL" directory> "VF_BMP03.LZH"
Files of these three is a wallpaper collection. Size 320 *
It is a full-color BMP format uncompressed at 240. Game
I collected a picture that was Erisugu~tsu from the movie in.
It should be noted that this data type is of interest for purposes other than personal use

I started futzing around with Paperboy / Rampage on the GBA, and noticed something odd while browsing through the ROM's data - these lines:
Hero idolized by young and old
Being invited to White House
-- are apparently repeats in the game that exist for no reason. The lines that are actually supposed to be used are found in a different section of the game. Also there's text for Paperboy credits, which isn't used, because the credits are shown in the main menu. I'll probably add an article in a little bit.

Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly which games. One of them was a Valve game that had a website's logo buried in its resources as a shoutout to said site, which might be in a topic somewhere on this board.
You mean this thing?

I don't agree with you. There have been numerous homebrew games created to be sold in the past few years.
Unlicensed games were typically created by a company. Homebrew games, despite being unlicensed, aren't always. I think the big distinction is "was it mass produced?" Homebrew games aren't printed in large numbers.

Originally posted by Sik That still won't fit the criteria. Also where it's true each run was a (relatively) small print, put all the rereleases together and it stops looking so small (and let's not get into the Kickstarter to make HD ports...).
Homebrew is pretty much just a label given arbitrarily. It's about as useless as indie at this point, since it has no hard definition.
I'm not disagreeing with this. I'm just saying that not all homebrew games are made to be sold.

I'm pretty sure they count. There's stuff like Proto aper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which came from a multiple-game demo disc.
I think the only difference would be that you have to say where the demo came from - if it came from a game or something else.

I don't see why there'd be an issue with linking to other sites with similar themes.
As for ads, I don't care either as long as they don't make noise or take over the mouse / window.

This would be good. That way the ads don't bother the regular contributors who tend to load / reload the pages when working on stuff.

Good point. *checks*

I started poking around Sonic Adventure DX (the Steam version that's a port of the 360 version that's a port of the Gamecube version) and found a bunch of leftover stuff from the PS3 version. (Mostly Japanese info and such.) There's also some leftover graphics stuff from the 360 version (Leaderboards, daily challenges, etc.)
I also found... the Game Gear games! They're still included in the game files, and I was able to decompress them all. I even found a sixteenth compressed file which, when decompressed, contains this text:
press -r g-sonic.gg g-sonic.prs
press -r labylin.gg labylin.prs
press -r mbmachin.gg mbmachin.prs
press -r prs.bat prs.prs
press -r s-drift2.gg s-drift2.prs
press -r s-tail2.gg s-tail2.prs
press -r skypat.gg skypat.prs
press -r sonic-ch.gg sonic-ch.prs
press -r sonic.gg sonic.prs
press -r sonic2.gg sonic2.prs
press -r sonicdri.gg sonicdri.prs
press -r sonictai.gg sonictai.prs
press -r sonic_tt.gg sonic_tt.prs
press -r spinball.gg spinball.prs
press -r tailsadv.gg tailsadv.prs
There are some references to these games in the executable (file names, and corrupt, possibly compressed menu strings) but there's no way to run them as far as I can tell. I have no idea if anyone at Sonic Retro has uncovered this because their web server hates me and refuses to load anything more than A SINGLE PAGE.

Originally posted by omega59 Holy crap, that's interesting. Are they emulatable, or are they corrupted like some of those files?
I'm pretty sure they work fine. The emulator is just not available in the Steam version of the game according to MainMemory. It should still work fine in the older, non-Steam version.
