teh s uck?
Probably about a year ago, I bought a ViewSonic LCD monitor (VA912b, if it matters). Ever since, the video off my computer (Asus A7N266-VM, with an onboard GeForce 2) is WAY too bright. Reference:
It starts out here:

But in order to see anything, I need to set it here:

(EDIT: The reason the answer isn't just "check 'use these settings at startup' then EAT COMMUNISM!" is because it's not perfect... only acceptable. The shadows end up being way too dark; this just turns down the highlights enough that I can tell the difference between white, light gray, and light blue.)
That gets it sort of close to normal. It's not the monitor that's broken, because I've tested it with two laptops (mine, and some random laptop at the service desk where I bought it) and they look perfect. This issue's been going on ever since I started using the flat-panel, and as far as I know, didn't exist with my old monitor (some gigundo 21" CRT, which I've since sold on Craigslist). Anything I can do to fix the onboard video, or should I just get a video card?
And if the solution is a new video card, since I plan on reusing this motherboard/CPU (it's been great otherwise) combo in a DVR (probably a MythTV box), what should I look for in a video card, besides S-video or any old TV-out (which the onboard video doesn't have)? If I can find more Kworld TV Terminators (the computer store where I bought the one I have now doesn't have them), I'll be using those as the tuners, so I don't need PVR capabilities from the video card (I, uh, don't, right?). But that's another episode. |
