Glitterberri, just so you know, I've edited my commentary to fix some mistakes and other misc. stuff. Please use this version.

Well, there's the possibilty of looking into the game's files for text, but I've never actually handled the game's ISO, so I have no idea how it is structured or compressed.

You can extract files from Gamecube ISOs with GCRebuilder. I'm not sure about compression, though.

I don't know how relavent it is to the wiki, but while looking through Glitterberri's translations of Hyrule Historia I came across this TWW concept art piece:

Right here.

The magic bean drawing in the top right corner is especially interesting to me. Why? In the game's code, there is a blank item entry for something called "Magic_Bean."

It's just something interesting I found.

Oh, also blanked out in the code are two sails- "zora_sail" and "tincle_sail." Apparently there was more than one sail type at one point.

Er... Ok. Sorry?

Also, even less relevant to the wiki than my last post, but...

Within JaiSeqs.arc, all of the dungeon BGM is called d_(dungeon name).bms.

However, the Tower of the Gods' sequence file is called Kaminoto.bms (Kami no To being "Tower of God" in Japanese).

The thing is that the Tower still has a sequence with the other dungeon names- d_amosu.bms. For some reason, this is Gohdan's battle theme instead of the dungeon's theme. My guess is that the original BGM (pre-TotG redesign) was in this file; when the TotG was redesigned, the new theme was moved to kaminoto.bms and d_amosu.bms was relegated to holding Gohdan's battle theme.

Also, the designers were kind of sloppy in designing the first room of the TotG. I'll show some pics later.

It could be, considering this is the first dungeon where the appear. What's weird is that the dungeons are called by primarily English names- d_forest, d_earth, d_wind, ect. Only Dragon Roost Cavern is Japanese- d_ryumt. Perhaps the fact that the names are in Japanese says they were finalized later in development? Or maybe the other way around.

Here's one of them. I've got a couple that I'll post an explain tomorrow:

This is the first room of the Tower, from a top-down perspective, with culling turned... on? Off? I'm not sure.

The thing about this is that the "floor" is just a plane with a section boxed in. And despite the fact that there's an object with the water that changes its height, the floor has its own collision, even for the parts that you can't get to. It might just be my opinion, but I think this is clear evidence that the designer was in a rush to complete the model- so much so that he didn't bother to delete the extra pieces of the plane.

However, that minimap of this room from the wiki seems to have the same shape water-wise, but not land-wise. Could the floor here be from the pre-redesign TotG, with the bulk of the geometry replaced? Perhaps the original map was as large as the base plane. The collision was probably added so that Link wouldn't fall into nothingness if the the water object failed to load during testing.

Hold up:

Compare that to:

The proportions of the beta minimap almost perfectly match those of the base plane in the image above. What could this mean?

OK, one more tonight.

These two pictures are from Room18 of the Tower of the Gods. Room18 is the outdoor area just before the boss room.

Now. Notice how the texture doesn't repeat properly just below the tower's top. Also notice how the shading is inconsistent between the tower and the top. This change happens where the wall meets the floor of the top of the tower where the bell is (part of it is modeled in this map). The shading seen here is also consistent on the Tower's ocean model, which is an object called X_tower.

Based on this evidence, my hypothesis is that the top of the tower shown in the model of Room18 originally looked like Room20, the beta bell tower. When they redesigned the tower, they went in and remodeled the top, cutting it off and copy-pasting the top from X_tower onto it. This created the discrepancies seen in these photos.

This would make sense when you take a look at this image:

This is a comparison of Room18, Room19 and Room20. Room19 fits almost perfectly in the doorway that normally leads to Gohdan's room, and it fits inside the tower as shown in Room18; so does Room20. The fact that all three rooms fit together so well and the fact that they are numbered consecutively heavily suggests that at one point you would have entered these rooms one after another, starting with Room18.

I think it's still up for debate as to what exactly Room19 was used for. It is big enough to be a boss room, in my opinion, but it was cut very early as there are virtually no objects in it (not even a spawn point for Link, which is why the map won't load normally). Whether Room18 would have been the room immediately after or immediately before the boss room is currently a mystery.

Was dumping textures recently, and I found this kind of creepy image:

This rough image of Jabun's eyes and nose is found in the textures for the model "gyoei," which apparently means "fish shadow." On the actual model, the eye texture is blurred by a blue effect- which makes the model kind of freaky-looking. There's another model, "new_gyoei," that doesn't have this eye texture.

What's interesting about this is that there is concept art that is this exact concept-

Click

Because of the camera angles in the cutscene, new_gyoei and its accompanying (very unrealistic) wiggling animation are barely seen. This texture indicates that there was something more like the concept are planned.

It's definitely a beta version of the Shadow Beasts that make portals when defeated. They just cut the extra pair of arms before modeling it- perhaps for the better.

You know, I'm interested in seeing if the beta Shadow Beast can be loaded into the game. It seems to be very similar to the final monsters, so maybe it will load. I'll see about placing it in a map soon.

I tried that, and the game threw a bunch of exceptions at me. Using XDaniel's actor editor (it works for both TWW and TP) to find the actor for the Shadow Beast reveals that the actor name is E_s1, despite the fact that the .arc with the final shadow beast is E_s2. Somewhere the game must redirect itself to E_s2. So at the moment, loading E_s1 isn't possible.

I can help with adding actors, but my computer isn't useable right now.

Also, what is this program? Is it a new version of the converter used to make the first model? We might not be able to have custom collision yet, but custom maps would be cool. Can you provide a link to the program?

Thanks for the link.

Stage.arc. It has a lot of important stuff in it. Here's a quick list of what's in it:

Skybox models (found in the bdl folder)

Mini-Maps (found in the dat folder)

Cloud textures (cound in the tex folder, I think)

Dungeon-unique doors (dungeons only, found in another bdl folder, possible one called bdlm)

DZS files- DZS files are set up just like DZRs. DZSs contain more environment-related info, like lighting, fog and item usage. Events from Event_List.dat (see below) are also stored here, as are treasure chests. There's more to it, but that's the gist. (found in the dzs folder)

Event_List.dat- This is an immensely important file. It contains the "events" that can occur within in the room. Events are basically mini-cutscenes that actors or event Tags (things called TagEv or Tagmsg in the SCOB or SCOx sections of DZR files) can call; I'm not sure how actors do it, but I know that tags use the index number of the event as identified in the DZS. (found in the dat folder)

I would just suggest taking the Stage.arc from the Forbidden Woods, but only because it's darker and foggier. Be aware that particle effects (the ash in Dragon Roost, the forest particles in Forest Haven, ect) are actually objects in the DZR. It'll be one of the first ones I place when I start editing a DZR.

Oh! Another note. Remember how in the IGN preview videos, the doors in Forsaken Fortress move up instead acting like the final doors do? These doors still exist in the game. I don't remember where, and I don't have access to my computer ATM, but I'm 75% sure that the door is stored in the Stage.arc of the beta Tingle room.

I hope Gamma is having some success with importing actors.

The computer with all my stuff on it is still down for the count, so I haven't been able to actually start it yet. However, there's a chance that it will be fixed in the next few days (maybe even today), so don't worry- it will get done.

Also, I don't think testing this type of hacking on an actual console is feasible. The way I understand it, the Wii can't use the SD card or USB drive while in Gamecube mode, so the only way to play a GC game through backup is with a burned DVD-R. Wasting a DVD-R every time you want to try something out would not be practical. Unless there's been some kind of breakthrough that I don't know about.

Edit: Ha, I guess I should have looked up Dios Mios. I didn't know you could do that. I'll have to get this installed ASAP.

Well, I had hoped it would be fixed by now, but there were some snags, and... The problem was that I dropped it one to many times (I'm clumsy sometimes, what can I say?) and the hard drive got damaged. I've got a new hard drive (this one's even bigger than the one I had before), but I found that the backup I had made a little while back only had one of my computer's partitions (Which sucks, because that means that I have to go download the programs I had been using for TWW hacking again). My dad was helping me with it, but he had to leave for a business trip on Monday and won't be back until Sunday, so I don't actually know when it will be fixed. We set up the remaining partition to be restored to the new drive before he left, but I don't know what happened with it.

So, long story short, I actually have no idea when my computer will get fixed. I apologize for that, but be assured that I will get it done when I can.

On another note, I see what you mean about the tree model. Would you be able to post a screenshot of the model you suggested to put on the stumps? Even though I can't do anything, I at least want to get an idea of what I'll be trying to do.

While I'm on the subject, what exactly should I put in the map? We need trees, grass, moblins and bushes, I know that, but... what about the other things? I noticed that the trailer shows the map with three different aesthetics- a clear day, a rainy scene and forest particles at night. Should I only be concerned with the 'clear day' one right now? Should I set it up so that it starts raining in a portion of the map? I think I can do that. If we can figure out how the game decides to use two different ACTR/ACTx and SCOB/SCOx DZR entries for day and night, we could make it so that the forest particles only appear at nighttime...

Er, do you have any opinions on the matter, Cuber? I feel that you're really the head of this project.

I think they should work perfectly for the map. Their location is in the description of the video.

As for what to put on the map, let's keep it simple so we don't kill ourselves. What we need are trees and 2 moblins, that is it. We can talk about importing other actors once we are able to accomplish this first task.

Alright. I see. And now we just wait...

I was going to say something about that, Dark Linkael, but I forgot.

First off, are you trying to restore the rooms into locations with other room files?

If so, my guess is that the game refuses to load both BMDs and BDLs in places like dungeons, where there are multiple rooms.

If you take, say, Room20 from "Siren" and replace the room file in "Omasao," it works perfectly- as does Room19 if you can get it to fit.

However, I could be wrong. It could simply be that the rooms interfere with the dungeon's normal layout, and thus do not load. In the long run, I do not know for sure what causes rooms and collision to not load. The only solution I have seen is to move the room file to a location with only one room file (such as "Omasao," which I mentioned before).

I believe that the old skybox model doesn't work because it's a BMD, and thus is called "VR_box.bmd[\b]." The final main skybox is, I think, called "vr_sky.bdl." The game is probably programmed to look specifically for vr_sky.bdl, file extension and all, and basically skips the file (if the old model is renamed to just "vr_sky.bmd") or crashes while trying to read it (if the file extension is changed to ".bdl") Theoretically, making "vr_box" a .bdl file should fix the problem.

Also, for reference, you should probably try to nullify the file called "vr_backcloud," as that bdl holds the cloud texture that always sits on the horizon. Since vr_box's textures include an older version of these clouds as vr_backcloud, having both of them would just render vr_box's version of the horizon clouds unseen.

Alright, I might have run into a bit of a problem.

I want to use the colored version of the forest's model to test out the actor placement. Now, when I use the room.arc provided in your download, Cuber, the room loads with no problem. But if I unpack your .arc, replace room.dzr and repack it, Dolphin crashes with the error "Invalid texture coordinates format (Format = 7)." Have any idea why this happens only with my changes? It might have something to do with the fact that I'm using Outset Island's .dzr file... I haven't tried switching it yet, so maybe that's the problem. I'll get back in a moment with an update.

The problem was the fact that I was using Outset's actors. Using the forest on Outset's actors works fine.

We've got another problem, though:

The tree in lwood doesn't work that well. There's still a space between the actor and the model. What should we do?

You know what... Upscaling the model for the tree might work. Since we can have textures now, that might be possible. It would be easy to replace the old tree with the new tree. Can we do that?

I'm pretty sure that there's only one type of big tree. The grown up form of the Deku Sprouts might be worth a look, though.

I've experimented with adding new locations (creating a new folder and placing it in res/stage), and that's worked. Perhaps adding a new object might work, as well. I should run a test later.

On another note, I found this odd bit while researching Outset's forest:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZfp88q5Mhw

The two bokoblins that you normally fight are actually Kargaroc objects - the bokoblins spawn with the kargarocs that fly them in. There are three bokoblin actors mixed in with the objects for the "Meet Tetra" cutscene, however. Of the three, the only one that spawns is the first monster you fight - the one near the tree stump. The other twos' parameters prevent them from spawning.

However. Changing the first bokoblin's parameters to those of the unused bokoblins causes all three to spawn. The video shows how the two bokoblins that didn't spawn before act. It appears that they were meant to have found Tetra before Link, and were attempting to retrieve her by A) jumping up and snapping their jaws at her and B) kicking the tree to try and make her fall. These two guys aren't attached to anything - that is, unlike the two kargaroc actors, who are set up somehow to make the "Tetra Wakes Up" cutscene play when they're killed, these guys don't do anything once killed.

An interesting thing to note is that if you trigger the "Tetra Wakes" cutscene, the bokoblin farthest from her fits squarely in the center of the first person view. It also fits the musical flourish and Tetra's reaction. Could this suggest that the bokoblin was originally meant to be there? Probably not, but the fact that the monster being there fits so will with what happens in the cutscene is interesting nonetheless.

Another interesting thing: The bokoblins aren't present in the E3 demo, either, which suggests that they were either added and scraped sometime after the demo was built, or scraped before the demo.

Have you actually tired making a new actor, dark linkael? I think we should hold off on saying it's impossible until we've proved it to be.

Also, I was curious and watched the TWW trailer on the Ocarina of Time/Master Quest disc. Humorously enough, the title screen it shows uses the final sky, but literally all clips after that use the beta sky found in "tincle." It's also worth a mention that it looks like the Forsaken Fortress (the version you visit at the very beginning of the game) was going to have unique black clouds.

Aha! Another difference! The trailer shows a short clip of Link holding up the Master Sword in Hyrule Castle's basement. By comparing this scene to the same one in the final, it's obvious that the stained glass is either completely different or just arranged in a different way:

Trailer version:

http://tcrf.net/images/6/6e/WindWaker-Trailer.png

Final version:

http://tcrf.net/images/2/2b/WindWaker-Untitled.png

The camera angle seems to be a bit different, too.

This is the trailer, although it's labeled as the Japanese commercial. It might just be both:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvxCH1imMAY&feature=related

Another thing I noticed is that the room in the Wind Temple where Link is fighting the Darknut looks a lot darker than the final Wind Temple does. Perhaps they gave the fog its warmer, more orange color later on in development.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
