Castlevania 1, 3, and Bayou Billy are all much harder than the Japanese versions.

The Magic of Scheherazade seemed easier than Arabian Dream Scheherazade. I never got far in the latter, but the first random battle I got into seemed completely unwinnable. You'd probably have to level grind with the minor overworld enemies for quite a while before you'd even stand a chance. I never had that problem in TMoS.

There's a lot that's off in places, but... blegh. Thanks. I'm really, really lucky when things turn out halfway decent. I'm even luckier that I'm able to coast more on my writing than my drawing skills.

Yeah, there's some differences.

Dude, Picsies!

I'm glad that site agreed the American version was better, so I know it wasn't just me. Although, I'd still like to finish the Japanese version eventually. Though there's no doubt in my mind that the American version's graphics and music are better, for all I know, maybe I'd like the Japanese version if I could learn to make some kind of progress in it.

Despite that Geocities had gotten a really bad rap, it wasn't a terrible way to get a website started. My site started out on Geocities (mostly as an in-joke that got way out of control, but, that's another story).

The problem seemed to be a combination of bad decisions combined with the company just not giving a crap about keeping up with the times. Very few updates to the service were ever made, except when they wanted you to start paying to have the same thing as before.

The biggest turn off for most people I know who were using Geocities was when they started deleting accounts if their sites weren't updated in a few months. Some people might go away for a while, or just go awhile without updating - they didn't like thinking their sites would get deleted if they just took a break or had no internet access for some time. Also, if you were to build a shrine for a specific game, you might eventually run out of material for it, but would still want it to be around so that future visitors could use it as a resource. I rarely update my completed game shrines, for example, because there's no need to.

I also don't get how deleting accounts was good for Geocities. How does something like Geocities earn money (besides the paid-for services)? From ads. How do people see the ads? By surfing the sites that display them. How can people see ads on sites that don't exist? ... ?

Take for example, I should search "Secret of Mana", and someone's old Secret of Mana page on Geocities turns up. I would probably visit that page and would see the ads. But if that Secret of Mana page is deleted, well, it's not going to turn up in any search results, and I'll go to someone else's site instead, so there is now 0% chance that Geocities would earn any money from me.

--

The only popular modern internet social service I get any use out of is YouTube. I have a website and a message board for all my other needs. But YouTube was the only service that offered the ability to do something I couldn't do before.

I had forgotten how frighteningly messed-up Faria's art style is. It's like Miyazaki meets Toriyama in a dark alley and got jumped by David Lynch.

Fun fact: The Magic of Scheherazade was the first game I ever played that had menu-driven battles and I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first got into one.

Ahahahaha no. I'm not actually a "challenge gamer"; I don't do things to artificially make games more difficult... heck, as I said on IRC last night, "But I've actually never in my life played through a game, finished it, and said, "gee, this was a good game, but you know what would make it better? If it was FIENDISHLY FUCKING HARD!"." So... yeah. I just want to *beat* Zelda 2, not beat it in an incredibly obtuse way that would serve no purpose except to (fail to) impress some people on the internet.

That's how I feel about that sort of thing, too. I like games to be challenging, but I'm not the type of person who will attempt to make them more challenging artificially.

Coincidentally, Resident Evil 4 (which I'm still currently replaying) was one of the three best games I played in 2010 that I had never played before (the other two were Lemmings & Oh No! More Lemmings and Crash Bandicoot).

The first time I started RE4, I fumbled around so much that when I got to the Village Chief boss, I had hardly any ammo or healing items left and had to restart from the beginning. But, it didn't take very long to get back up to him and I did a much better job on the second attempt and was finally able to beat him.

The thing I liked about RE4, and the only other RE game I ever beat, RE0, is that they both have harder difficulty settings that really force you to know the game well to win. So there's a easier mode for those who don't want to play something insanely difficult, but it's there for those who do and you don't have to worry about imposing your own limitations, the hard mode will do that for you.

Hum. I never played that game before, actually... I should try it sometime; I hear it's quite good.

I do highly recommend it, but I do warn that it's rather easy. I know someone who loves challenging games who went to play it and I kept telling him that it probably wasn't the best choice for him because he might find it too easy, but he ended up liking it anyway.

I have a (nearly) complete shrine for it, if you're interested

I probably should replay this game before making a post like this, but if there's any chance at all anyone else has played it, maybe they could comment on it...

I found some stuff in NES Might & Magic that I don't remember...

The amorphous shackled being is definitely used, but I don't recall seeing any of the others. For that matter, I don't recall any character art that looked so obviously anime/manga in style.

Right below those guys are this headbanded dude and elf that I also don't recognize. Maybe they're used and I've just forgotten them, but they rather look like they could have been intended as character portraits for the various races/classes you can recruit into your party.

Is the dude in the lower left used? Where is there a library in that game? And once again, very anime/manga-styled. The sword looks like it should be used, but I can't remember where it appears...

The freaky-looking wizard in the upper right isn't familiar to me, but it's possible I just don't remember him. However, the tree in the lower left is especially questionable. I don't recall any trees so important that they got their own portrait. And it looks like it's sparkling.

I unlocked the four characters in Mercenaries and haven't played it since. Getting the handcannon is way too OCD for me.

Also, so far two other people I know who have played NES Might & Magic have both told me those manga-style character portraits are unfamiliar.

Huge Blaster Master haul...

The wiki already has the Spike Weapon mentioned, but none of this stuff:

The Moai Head at the top doesn't seem to be used anywhere.

Some sort of turret enemy that would stand up on stilt-like legs. To the left of him is another turret/tower thing that's not used in Blaster Master, but my resident Blaster Master expert says it got used for the engine upgrade in Enemy Below. Below that is another unused enemy with a side-mounted cannon.

Those miniature versions of Sophia's upgrades aren't used. Text was used on the menu screen to show the weapons/upgrades, instead. Also, there's something weird between the "Select Weapon" text and Jason's outline. It seems like it lines up with Sophia's outline, somewhat, and was probably going to be used to show the cockpit open.

Neither me nor my resident Blaster Master expert recognize the knight-like enemy on the bottom of this rip. However, this website shows it on a sprite sheet. We're not sure how he got them, though. Maybe he ripped them from the ROM, or maybe there's a way to get it to show up somewhere...but if it is used, it must only be able to move forward. No sprites for facing left, right, or up.

The guy at the bottom with the outstretched hand isn't used, as far as we know. Also, there's a weird turret with a beak-like orifice between the lightning bolt and the Level 5 fish-like enemy that I don't recognize.

More!

The Plutonium Boss appears to have graphics for an unused drill/cone that it probably would have spit at you to prevent you from staying directly in front of its face for too long.

Likewise, the final boss seems to have an unused attack, too - that spiral laser at the top.

The E-capsule near Jason on the left doesn't seem to be used.

On the bottom right, in with the ending graphics, are three tiny little Sophias of descending size. The camera was probably supposed to pan out, but Sophia is seen from behind in the ending and these sprites were drawn from a front view. Oops.

Alas, I didn't find what I had been hoping to find - evidence that Jason once had the ability to jump in the overhead areas - but I didn't expect to find this much, either.

This is almost as much as that Flintstones game...

EDIT - Totally missed this earlier, but the final boss looks like he would have shot the laser from his left hand after losing the shield. There's an unused animation of him pulling his arm back and putting his palm forward that my resident Blaster Master expert, CodieKitty, pointed out. I always though the loss of his shield was just to let the player know he was taking damage and almost done. But it looks like originally he was supposed to lose it to go into "Phase 2" of his attack. Instead, he just stays in "Phase 1".

According to a Blaster Master guide that CodieKitty has, the knight enemy appears in one of the Level 6 ice dungeons. That might explain why I've never seen it. I know how to get right to the boss on that stage and have probably never fully-explored it.

Someone with better hacking skills than me should probably check into this game a little more thoroughly - find out if any of these enemies are fully-functional and if those two unused final boss attacks can be activated.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
