Oh in that case then disregard :/ I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens beyond this point.

Might as well disambiguate the Mega Drive ones while I get the chance

There are three known Mario unlicensed works on the Mega Drive. In order of the posted videos:
Super Mario World - based on another unlicensed game called Squirrel King
Super Mario World 64 - this is the SMW one that also steals music from TaleSpin. THis one's a bit notorious because the way the hardware is built apparently "ripping the ROM chips out" is out of the question because then we'd have to guess pins (assuming we can get rid of the epoxy cleanly)... and every other attempt to dump it has failed. I still say we need to rip the ROM chips off but the rarity of this one might make this a task that isn't for the faint of heart. I don't remember the exact situation but it's on ASSEMbler somewhere
not posted: Super Mario Bros 2 1998 (Super 1998 Mario 2?) - this one plays like the original Mario (is it exactly that?) and the one Sonic Jam 6/Super 1998 Sonic 6 is based on

We have basic information on all of that at Sega Retro and I'm sure other sites have more detailed information. It's been a while since I looked through all the MD unlicensed games... (isn't there a fourth Mario one?)

Hey. Choosing one of the eight default teams, enter the password NWAKI. I can't really tell what this does becuause I'm not sure how the game works, so does it actually do anything? It's one of the four builtin passwords in the game, though I know what the other three do now. Thanks.

Derp; turns out it's MWAKI not NWAKI, and the code gives you 995 bonus points. Thanks anyway.

...made three years later OI

I have looked through this title at least three times trying to find either an endinig or a staff roll. This is the ending; after this the game is written to just add one to the level counter and go tot he next level, which crashes the game. (What does the kanji say?) But there's a screenshot of a staff roll on GameFAQs. The Super Famicom staff roll is slightly different (black background and a different starfield) and the SNES one is totally different. Does anyone know anything about this? I can keep looking...

Is there a way to enter your name other than by dying? There's some code that implies you can at around $815C (which jumps into the level end routine and waits for a return, then calls the score tally, then the name entry, then jumps back to the Sega screen...)

There's an options screen. You can jump right into it from the title screen with FFFFF0:01. It looks like the only code that writes 1 to that value is... the options screen code? Is there a documented other way to get in here? There are some other weird things with that screen (max round select?) but I can look those up later...

helpful codes:
354:60 bypass checksum
FFF5D4:000[0-9] level counter
FFF420:FFFF automatically win battles

Thanks.

I traced the code and that's what it seems to do; if this is an emulator bug then herp derp

Also it turns out the options screen is up+start on the title screen

EDIT
hm, looking at the SFC video again, it looks like the ending I'm getting comes after the staff roll... followed by the score tally and name entry...

EDIT
yep turns out I was totally wrong there's another part after the final stage that somehow using the patch codes I gave above skipped over... derp
now I have a million codes that skip over the final area and let me see the credits, whose roles are in kanji so I'll worry about it later
Thanks anyway!

Apparently After Burner II on the Genesis has some sort of fantasy storyline? These messages are displayed two at a time (except for one) if you use a button combination every time your missiles get restocked. I'm going to write about it as soon as I confirm everything in the US/Europe version of the game, but my question for here is: does this sound familiar? Is it taken from some other game? Possibly one Dempa was involved with? Thanks.

Posted on 05-20-12 05:06:24 PM, in MAME debugger doesn't work on Linux; how do I fix it? Link
Not sure if this is the right place but

I build MAME from source and would like to use the debugger to do some basic research on a few arcade games — I did do some string searches and found a few potentially unused things already for TCRF. When I run the MAME debugger-enabled builds with --debug, however, all I get is a black window and no activity. What do I do? I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (I plan to move distributions later) building MAME 0.145 (this happened with at least one slightly older version too) and can provide other requirements if you ask. I'd like to have MAME run natively rather than through wine; the Windows version in wine does work... Thanks.

Found the problem: in src/osd/sdl/dview.c, in function dview_class_init, on non-Windows systems, it calls gconf_client_get_default() to get the system default monospace font from gconf, which is hanging for some reason. If I change #ifndef SDLMAME_WIN32 to #if 0 to bypass the gconf check and grab the Pango default monospace font, it works. So now the question is why does gconf_client_get_default() not return... :/ Thanks anyway.

Championship Pro-Am on Genesis appears to have a cheat code, but I can't tell what it does. The code is simple: Down+A+B+Start on the title screen. If you did it right, you'll hear a ring. Can anyone else tell? Thanks.

Tech: the game sets byte $FF0310 to 1, which has some side effects that again I can't tell what they are, such as setting byte $FF0609 to 5.

SonicFreak94 found this in the Dreamcast version of Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future. Is it used in that version? He checked the PS2 version's Gallery, but did say he didn't unlock everything yet... Thanks.

Also

[20:11] <SonicFreak94> yeah
[20:11] <SonicFreak94> there's also a clean version of the titlescreen without the logo and crap on it
same question.

On the subject of Game Graphic Studio, it seems to be the only tool left that can properly handle TIM2 textures when I needed it (maybe hat GGD one as well? I have yet to try tha), and of course it's not open source (as far as I know, anyway). It seems all the online documentation on the TIM2 format has disappeared :/ Does anyone know of a specification anywhere that we can use to construct different or better tools? Thanks.

Posted on 03-07-13 05:28:36 PM, in Viewpoint (Neo-Geo) - scratch RAM for testing demo recording (last edited by andlabs at 03-07-13 05:30:15 PM) Link
So I have been documenting the debug menu in Viewpoint for the Neo-Geo, and I'm down to one last feature, which is basically a demo recorder. The problem: the recorder is only writing to ROM right now. I am using MAME with the MAME debugger. What options do I have? Here are the ones I can think of:
  • Can I somehow load up a memory card in MAME and write and read that?
  • Does MAME have a memory analyzer tool that I can use to find blocks of unused memory itself?
  • Is there a way I can tell MAME to just let the game overwrite ROM? The debugger and cheat engine can do it
If all else fails I can just do a manual analysis to find an unused memory block. Thanks.

Posted on 03-29-13 05:59:30 AM, in I've stumbled across something odd while ROM Corrupting Metal Head on 32x. Link
83C:4E71 bypass checksum (this is a word write)
2438:60 bypass region lockout (this is a byte write)
These are codes for Gens/GS and show ROM addresses; add $880000 to the address part to get the 32X logical address. And yes, the rainbow intro is still there, complete with Sega sound.

I'll look at the Garfield thing later.

For what it's worth, I started to write a somewhat dumb TMS34010 disassembler for the purpose of going through the game's code and figuring out how the graphics are stored. It won't be quite as flexible as something like IDA but it could definitely help to understand some things. I have no idea when I will finish it though... but hopefully sometime before the end of next month.

Right, but I don't remember being able to produce a complete and standalone disassembly with that, unless there's something I am missing.

Also, this will be a standalone disassembler, not an IDA processor module — I have no idea how to write those (or if I could, or if it would be easy since I am on Linux and only have Windows IDA here, though I do have the SDK) :/

Koei games always seem to have these DEBUG strings in them. Whether you can get anything out of it is the fun part though...

I also started looking into Wimbledon Championship Tennis MD to see if there was a "better" way to get into the debug code or a more precise description of what was going on. I'll post my results when I get them (also I should probably clear out a few other random backlogs while I'm at it...)

Are you able to set breakpoints on longform addresses (cpuname.[mp][bwd]@xxxxxxxx, for instance maincpu.md@00123456 for longword at $123456)? When I did Galaxy Force II I figured out that m was used to modify ROM and p was used to modify the rest of the address space; I don't know what is really going on and the source code is unclear about what the letter means.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
