Just this past summer, actually--my summer job involved living in a vacated frat house with 8 peers who worked as counselors (I had a different job title, but I still pitched in with some similar responsibilities) and two sets of 44 kids aged 13-17. I did not expect that the 9 of us would grow so close in the 6 weeks we lived together, or that we'd get so attached to the kids in each of the 3 week sessions we had. (Had a scare one night when there was some prowler shining lights in our kids' bedrooms; we did a sweep around the house and called campus police, and the primal protective parental emotions we all had were just bursting)

It was a ton of fun, and the house was full of life (and our dope-ass decorations)

We had three departure days: two for the two sessions, and then one when we all broke off on our separate ways. All three days were an intense emotional drain, and the amount of crying that took place was pretty hilarious in retrospect. That last day, though, having to part ways after helping each other take down decorations and move, was rough. It's a testament to how close we had all grown, though and now I have a wall full of memorabilia from this summer.

At least we all keep in contact through Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat like filthy millenials

bringing in more positivity!

finished my cs degree this year despite not wanting to go into software development/engineering/oops

took up the same summer-camp-at-a-research-university job I had last year, but instead lived on campus with our house's counselors and 44 x 2 (two 3-week sessions) kids from 13-17. grew incredibly close--closer than I ever could have imagined--to these people and had an amazing time

landed a job at a major tech company as a contractor immediately after this year's summer job

turns out, despite started out not nearly as technical as my colleagues, I have grown substantially in these past few months and was assigned to an out-of-state project with very nebulous parameters (and ended up nailing the project; international travel is now on the table)

getting hired on as a full-time employee versus a contractor is slowly becoming a more and more tangible reality which is dope

oh and I bought a google pixel

Posted on 12-24-16 06:47:04 AM, in Why MineCraft (or any game) seems to get stale... (last edited by Dorito at 12-24-16 06:47:30 AM) Link

That first feeling is of discovery and wonder, of letting the world shape you as much as you shape it. It's not about tricks, efficiency, loot, encyclopedic knowledge, forward thinking, and huge builds. It's about just enjoying where you are and what you can do right now. Enjoy what you're doing now instead of thinking about what you've done in other worlds, what you'd rather be doing, or what you'd rather have built. Stay in right now instead of always wanting the fantasies of the future.

This died for me a long time ago. Once you see beyond the surface and dive in too deep, you can't look at the surface the same way again. You're always going to look beyond it because you know what's below. You can't unsee things, right?

At least me for me, anyway.

I've dumped a lot of time into Minecraft, starting from the pre-indev days all the way up to the first post-alpha release. At a certain point, it becomes the same thing again, and as someone with limited creative juices (such that I only uploaded 7 levels in Super Mario Maker but it's still my personal 2015 GOTY), Minecraft only had so much mileage. And even as StapleButter said, it's getting too complex for its own good, I feel. All those RPG bells and whistles just feel arbitrary.

And even without that, I can't continue to play the same game consistently save for one exception

and its modular nature (that is, being able to play either for 5-10 minutes or 3 hours) more easily facilitates this.

Minecraft asks for much more of your time to explore, learn, imagine, and build. It's very easy to burn out, boot up the game one day, ask what am I still doing?, and close the game and never open it again.

I had my time with Minecraft and it was good, but I've moved on to other activities, hobbies, and games since then. 2016 was a shitshow except for video games. Some godlike games came out this year, and if I'm not mistaken, I heard somewhere that there has never been a better time to be playing video games.

adding more to this oldass thread:

I'm not a big fan of Polygon, but I do love me some McElroy and Nick Robinson magic, so their Monster Factory and Car Boys series have made me cry from laughing multiple times; they're national treasures

formerly of gamespot's Danny O'Dwyer and a buddy of his started noclip and they hit the ground running fast; their Doom/Rocket League pieces are so so so good, especially as someone who loves both games to death

I'm a huge fan of Giant Bomb, but if it weren't for TurboMan's Best of Giant Bomb videos, I wouldn't have discovered them back in 2011.

also this guy's soulsborne videos are preeeeeeetty stupid in a great way

more forums will further fragment the few threads we get even further

it's like having too many playlists in rocket league; it will fragment the playerbase and you get even fewer matches in the playlist of your choice, rather than a more general catch-all selection
