Nice mini-game , I applaud your creativity!

I think you should start a thread showing your mods, they are very interesting. The only thing that bothered me is that I couldn't see Mario, I think a tiny jumping Mario would be more fun.

You can actually patch the ROM to skip Peach's intro (even on a new game). I was writing a program that did that and many other general changes but its on hold for now. If you are interested I can patch your ROM so that Peach doesn't get on the way .

I'm looking forward to see more from you. If you are interested, I have a mod called Platform Battlefield which adds some custom platforms to Flatworld so you can build some simple levels from it.

I've already started making a mod out of your platform battlefeild called "Star legend 64" which will consist of 3 levels and a boss. As for the intro skipping patch, i would very much appreciate it if you patched it for me. Another interesting idea I had was "Pac-Mario 64" which would also use your platform battlefeild (Each star is a level, collect a hundred coins to advance a level, boos will be floating around).

I've looked at your site to see your notes on how to change the background and i'm not quite sure where to find it in toads tool. Should i use a different program like a Hex editor or something?

I'm new here, and although I've read all the rules, am i allowed to start a thread with your permission?

Thanks.

This is my mod named Super Mario 64: Bowser's Return. So far, I have completed the first three levels.

Credit to Messian for Platform Battlefield and VL-Tone for Toad's Tool 64, which was how this mod was made.

Screenshots of part 1: (I have posted links to the screenshots so you don't get this mod unintentionally spoiled).

Download part 1 (I have split my mod into parts because Platform Battlefield only works on the first two levels. This patch contains one level. It only contains one level because originally I was going to scrap this part, and then I started working on part two, then when I decided to unscrap part one, there was no way to move a level from part 2 to part 1.)

(In the future, I will add a level to part one. I will upload a zip with a hard and normal difficulty patch for this part soon as well):

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mjmzo0trwdd

Download part 2 (This zip contains another two levels, with a hard and normal difficulty patch. Each level in part 2 only has 3 star acts because I ran out of object slots because I used alot of them on terrain blocks):

Celux: I'm not a moderator or anything, but if you expand a bit your mods and finish a few levels I think it may be worth its own thread. Perhaps you could try to blend these short mods you have done? Your "arena" Castle Grounds is very nice, you could use it as a hub for a few levels.

Blaster: I did a quick playthrough of your mod, it's nice however on the "Rocky Mountain" act I found the platform after the 4th screenshot you posted a bit too hard (but then, I'm not a good SM64 player!).

I think I will post an easy and hard version of each part of my mod.

Nice mod Blaster, I look forward to seeing it completed. The one issue I noticed, for the second star you need the wing cap which you don't unlock until some distance into the game. So you can't get it unless you use an old file, but for each mod i play i like to start a new file. Apart from that, great job!

Actually, you can get the wing cap if you get some stars from other levels I think, but doing that is a pain so I will change it.

STAR LEGEND 64 BETA V0.3
Hooray! I've finally completed the first level after many hours of work... "The Secret Woods"! It contains all 7 stars like a normal level with lots of baddies and a good challenge. It also contains a Petty Piranha Plant boss for star 5. The next level planned will be a huge tower containing many rooms and lookouts.
Hope you enjoy, because I put a lot of work into it!

Wow, that's the best mod of SM64 I have ever played! I really liked the level design, it had very fun gameplay, also the intro had a cool twist .

However, I didn't like the textures, draw distance, and it slowed down often, but the slowdown and draw distance is not your fault (because we don't have a model importer yet and having a max draw distance would slow it down far more, because we don't have a model importer).

But I like it. I can't wait to play the next level!

Edit: I have released part two of my mod. Check my second previous post to download it.

Celux: There's a lot of potential in this, however you have to take in account the slowdowns which happen when you use a lot of objects at the same time.

The easiest way to get around it is to disable objects for some acts, especially moving objects, such as tox-boxes and moving mushrooms. These take more processing time, so should be enabled only for the specific acts in which they are very important.

Also, if that "big tree" made by the huge blocks is only for "decorative purposes", you can assign the "Static & Non Solid" Behavior for the upper part, it will also make the level faster.

Experiment a bit, adjust the level design and then it will be a killer mod!

I'm sorry If I didn't make it very clear but the "Flat Lava Land" patch can't be used with Platform Battlefield as both modify the same area of the ROM. You probably applied the "Platform Battlefield" patch later, so it works but Lethal Lava Land will crash. I will include it in the next Platform Battlefield version, which will be released in a few days. Don't worry about having to start your project again on it, I can help "porting" your current work to the next version.

Keep up the great work!

Edit: Major news! I think I'm finally on the right track to overcome the slowdown problem! This is a screenshot of Blaster's mod:

This is running at full speed with ALL objects on screen, and it also worked with Celux level!

What I did was to experiment Blaster suggestion, keep the objects on screen even though the collision isn't loaded and applying some minor tweaks to the routine that processes objects collision. The results are so good that I think a solution may not be so distant!

Wow, I knew that would make a difference (faster than always loading the collision)! But did you decrease the amount of behavours in my mod? If you did, maybe that could have affected the speed. And what are those minor tweaks that you did? Were they changes to the draw distance/collision distance?

Edit: And another thing, the huge platform behavour (0x575C) contains the draw distance command (0x0E453E80) at 0x011B5784, but when I change it, or even zero it out, it has no effect on the draw distance. Is it even a draw distance command?

The first two bytes of the collision distance command (0x0E431000), which is at 0x011B5760, can be changed to 0E45 to turn it into a draw distance command, but I can't figure out how to use both the collision and draw distance at the same time.

If I don't specify the collision distance, the collision is loaded too late which allows Mario to walk through parts of the platform.

I didn't do many major changes in behaviors, what I looked was at the code that process the collision and these "distance" settings.

It's interesting that the "collision distance" seems to override the drawing distance. If the collision isn't loaded, the object will also disappear, and that's the main change I did.

The other tweak was to set the "default" collision distance (when none is specified) to a smaller value. For some reason, when you specify a "custom" collision distance through the "0E 43" command, it tends to slowdown the game. Now I know for sure that it isn't because the game can't handle it.

The problem is that I still can't get some of the bigger platforms to work 100%. Later I'll post a Gameshark code so you can easily test these modifications in yours and Celux mod and see where it works and where it doesn't.

So, with the behavours, are you using a specified value for the collision distance or none, so the game uses a default value? Also for the problem with the bigger platforms not working 100%, if you are letting the game use a default value for the collision distance, maybe increasing the default value will fix the problem?

I'm using none for all behaviors and experimenting with different default values, but I'm not entirely sure how it works. I'll send a private message in a few hours with more details so you can try tweaking some settings.

Edit: Sent! Also, here's a GOOD screenshot of Celux's mod:

Wow, thanks a lot for doing that to my mod! I can get back to work on it now and start on the second level. Just one odd thing i noticed: every time I start the rom it say "Unknown cicchip error". Know what this means? Also, i noticed you got rid of some stuff in certain acts that needed to be there. But Ill easily fix that, thanks!

Edit: Fixed and textures better!

Edit 2: How do i make it so baddies can walk on the platforms? I still haven't figured out what type of program you're using to change the code. Ive tried a hex editor but your codes aren't in there.

I got this from Youtube. It was Messian's reply to someone asking the same question. The reply was in the Platform Battlefield v004 video comments section. Messian uses Hex Workshop and Winhex.

Open your ROM in a Hex editor and go to offset 0x11Bxxxx + 4, where xxxx = behav number. Toggle the "hexadecimal" option in TT64 to get the right behavior numbers. If you did it correctly, replace the four "00" bytes with "0E 43 4B FF". However, objects with this property can be used only a few times, otherwise they slow down the level (a lot).

For instance, the first object behavior is 56CC, so 0x11B56D0 in the ROM is where "0E 43 4B FF" should be.

Celux: Sorry about the acts, I actually forgot that I disabled a few acts for your level. They can be enabled back now that the slowdown seems to be fixed. I'm still working on the "enemies" support, the solution on the post above may not be the best now so I would advice you to wait a bit.

The "cipchip" error message can be fixed later on, don't worry about it for now.

Impressive mod, Celux!

One question: Did you change the position of the spawned star
from the boss or did you build the level to suit it's old position?

Question for both Blaster and Celux, did you use TT64 for the mod using messiaens hacks or did you hack the geometry in hex just like him? Nice mods btw.

I used TT64 for the mod using messiaens hacks (PB v003 and v004). I didn't edit any geometry in hex.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
