I've been working on this mod for about two months now. I have no past experiences in modding any game, so this was a first for me. A lot of dedication has gone into this so far, I hope people like it.
I call it Super Mario 128. *groan*
It's designed to be a very hard, very puzzling platform game. Savestates are not encouraged, but it's understandable to use them.
4 full levels and every secret stage (excluding Rainbow Clouds and Bowser 3) are finished in this mod, but only 17 stars (spanning 6 levels + overworld) are obtainable without cheating in this release. (I want to preserve the sequence of events in the game as releases come out)

These screenshots really don't do the game justice- I don't want to spoil puzzles for people. Again, this is designed to be difficult. The storyline is meant to be humorous, but I'm no comedian, I'm a designer.

This mod is planned to be released in 3 parts, this being the first. This one plays up to a Bowser battle, with a cap stage. Each new release will play up to the next Bowser battle and have a new cap, which allows for backtracking through to old levels for new challenges! Enjoy!

My first thought when I saw the gold castle is that it looked like a 3d version of Adventure- you sure this isn't Super Mario 2600?

I can't get SM64 ROMs to run at a decent speed on this computer, but the screenshots don't look too bad- the black and white castle looks a bit repetitive though, any way to spice up the design?

i don't know i mean i for one like the looks, but i think he should worry more about the game itself first before the disign, but yeah a litle more spice doesn't hurt anything, even alot of my mods could use some

yeah i know, i want to play it, as long as its a rom link, and not a patch, i don't know how to play those.

i have been making this mod for outside the castle, but i can't seem to find the texture for the hills out-side the castle grounds, finding that texture would be helpful because i could change it and help it blend in with the rest of the place.

Try ultrahle. it'll run on old P3s.

Actually the textures are the low point of the mod. The best part is how I made a puzzle out of non-puzzle elements. The Monkey in TTM, for example. It's a PPF patch download, linking to ROMs is illegal.

-___- You know....are people really that incompetent? It doesn't take much effort to find out how to use a patch, just GOOGLE "using ROM patch" and you instantly get results.

You apply the patch to the ROM and then you get the hacked version. Hence why it is a PATCH, you are PATCHING a ROM like you would apply a patch to modify a piece of fabric
(but I guess you would just like everything done for you and only buy pre-patched T-shirts)

As for not worrying about the design until last, that's an absolutely horrible idea. You do realize the actual game designers ALWAYS worry about the design of the game before putting it in to motion right? Do you people think before you write things?

In regards to the actual hack, I like your level design. Your new Mario colors are an eyesore and the castle interior looks hideous. The levels themselves however look decent for a first timer. I'll try the hack later I guess.

I actually didn't do any texture modding until most changes had been made. I DID worry primarily about design. (Or were you not talking to me?)

The Castle interior looks a lot better in motion than in still shots. And the colors aren't bright or obnoxious, how are they bad?

Everything except the last paragraph about the hack itself was directed to pikmin pretty much~

The colors aren't bad but they don't look very appealing to the eye, you know? That's just my own opinion though.

I recommend not to judge this work by the screenshots only. The visual appearance may still change, I guess. As RJWaters emphasized, the focus seems to be on the design of an ultimately difficult platform game, so you need to take a closer look at it to actually get that sense of gameplay. However, this may take its time and some patience. Expect at least half an hour of effort to get on the castles roof, which is the first of about 5 individual challenges to merely get inside the castle.

@RJWaters2: Did you doublecheck all passages to the 17 stars of this release are possible to beat? The path to the top of the obelisk, act one, already looks hardly possible. I noticed you placed many act-dependent objects there.

Yessir, Mr. Bonifarz, double (and in some cases treble) checked the possibilities for each act. Note that not all of the stars are available in that level. Timing is key in that act.

Does that mean you've made it in the castle?

Here. I'll explain hoe to do this, even though it has been asked so much it is now a noob question. Although, eceryone is like that at one point. First, download a program to patch roms. Try PPF-o-matic. It was origionally designed for halo, but it works just fine for N64 hacks. Next, download the PPF Patch. Now, you must have an unedited extended SM64 rom. (it can be edited, but it might not work perfectly) Open up PPF-o-matic. Click the disk picture next to "patch" and browse for your patch. For ISO image, do the same thing, except you will have to select "all files" under the file types before you can load the rom. Hit apply, and in a few second you will have a patched rom.

By facing the same way, I can have them both lead to the same place (and be on the correct side of the door) with only using up one warp destination. Trick I use to free up a warp, useful for putting 3 levels in the castle grounds.
