DreamHost, I would really appreciate it if the render times would quit spiking. This has been going on for several months and it's really beginning to annoy the fuck out of me.

To all of you: My apologies. There's nothing I can do about this.
I've sent in my 7th support ticket about this issue to them. I am losing my patience very quickly, as well.

Grr.

I can relate. I've had more than one web host do that kind of thing, or shut down their free service.

In today's economy, can you blame them?

I'm honestly surprised any companies still offer free anything on the Internet.

Yeah, and the 404s and 500s are a pain too.

Of course, the real problem is how much it costs to have Dreamhost.

My $2 a month one beforehand kicked their arse at uptime and speed. Naturally, they were too good to be true, and went out of business.

But with Hostgator being teh suck from what I hear, I don't know where to go next...

To be honest, Dreamhost was doing just fine up until recently. This could still be that strange rotating-log problem.

It's kind of stupid; other people have no problems at all with it.

I suspect it's some shitwad eating up all the CPU time...

22k graph

I have Opera set to reload the index page once a minute (or so) to help keep the averages fairly good.

Regardless, though, this is completely unacceptable. I should not ever have to make a graph of this show >= 30sec.

I mean, fuck, the other rendertime chart (that shows the maximum, minimum, and average) has things that are so big they break the alignment; times >= 100 seconds, sometimes almost two minutes.

In short, it's making this site take one hundred times longer to load.

(Key:
Yellow bar: average render time per hour, seconds
Orange highlight: smoothed average average render time
Red BG highlight: smoothed average max render time
Times/dates in EST)

Intermittent problems are tough to troubleshoot. Especially if we are
unable to witness the problem as its occurring. Your site loaded fine in
my browser. I know you're tired of hearing that. There is one user on the
machine that appears to be consuming more than their fair share of system
resources. Our process monitor has been triggered on a pretty consistent
basis. They have been warned of this matter. I placed a connection limit
on their site as well. You mentioned that the problem typically occurs at
night. I've passed this info to a Tech that works the night shift. They
will be monitor the machine to ensure that there aren't any users causing
a strain on the machine. If you have any additional questions, please let
us know.

Hopefully this means things will start speeding up again.

I know from experience that intermittent problems are tough to troubleshoot. And as he said, especially if they can't see the problem occurring.

From a Help Desk perspective, I tend to ask for times of outages and problems when things are intermittent—it can help me direct a third-level support technician to where to look in logs and such.

Sometimes of course, logs provide no clue to the problem either, which sucks.

Persist with the trouble tickets, try to refer to your previous reference numbers too when logging new ones.

Remember to be courteous and patient with them as much as you can. Techs take abuse daily, and we tend to only put in the "basic" effort for those that abuse us. For those that are truly well mannered with us, we can bend over backwards.

Yeah, I gave them a direct link to the auto-updating chart (and the full version), along with the times it most often occurs. They're going to have a graveyard-shift tech look at it.

It'd be cool if it works.

Ahh, hopefully that will help.

The more information you can provide, the better. Not that you should have to do all the troubleshooting yourself or anything, but it really does help if you can provide a lot of information.

Instead of "my site don't work". Which I get here.

I re-reviewed all the data my logging has collected and it actually was pointing to the MySQL server sucking.

So during all that server funtime yesterday, another ticket got sent out:

It does look like your MySQL server has had an inconsitently stable time
recently. I have taken action by moving your Databases to another server
that has had a history of stability. In my tests after the move your
sites were loading quickly. Please get back to us in the coming days if
you notice any further issues.

One new MySQL server later, and the bar on my logging graph is in the super-low range it ued to be. We'll see after a few months if things improve, though.

For now, I'm a bit hopeful if nothing else.
