Well, I'm trying to get into doing more web design stuff. So far I've not been paid for any work I've done, but it's a start....?

I've created a very basic "about me" / "portfolio" web site.

Taryn Hicks: Digital Design and Illustration

The page does some slightly strange things in Internet Exploder, but is okay. The text is intentionally minimal and simple, as is content in general.

I intend to include a web form for contact information later.

Thoughts? Advice?

I have deliberately chosen to keep my content concise and to the point, but without making it look like I have nothing to say. I'm choosing what I say carefully and I want it to make an impact.

At this width I can also optimise the line-length for readability as per general typography recommendations.

P.S. It was actually designed on a widescreen monitor.

The bright-on-bright colorscheme is uncomfortable to read. The yellow links are very distracting, as well, so it's hard to focus on the text.

The background gradient also looks a bit rough.

Overall, kind of neat, but the text problems are kind of bleh.

(Also somehow I get that feeling this might actually be a bit neat if it cycles though 3 color schemes per day or something)

Edit: Also, about 60-70% of my screen is basically unused, which is kind of annoying.

I think it's great. I've been making myself one of these lately, and, well, I'm considering going back and starting again from scratch in Photoshop

Don't listen to Grumpy, I think the colours are great and it really sells you well. I especially love the border and the fade to the bottom of the screen. It's not too narrow, either - the content is presented well, and if it was any wider you'd seriously sacrifice readability due to wide paragraphs. I'd argue that websites shouldn't be designed to extend beyond 1280 pixels wide, so using the max-width and min-width properties in CSS I design sites to start stretching at 800 pixels wide, and stop stretching at 1280 pixels.

It's a really complete, very accomplished website that sums you up really well

Very nice site.

But I'd advise you to begin charging for the work you do in the future; Offering work for free can make you, the developer, look desperate for work and the employer may even lack confidence in your ability.
Luckily, you have plenty of it. Use it to your advantage.

Yes, ordinarily I would charge for my work -- however as some of my clients right now have been Schools, and I work on the School Help Desk, this has posed an Ethical Dilemma, a conflict of interest. I cannot use my current full-time employment position to my advantage in that way, so those clients from Schools have not been charged. I have used their requests though as experience and portfolio material.

The other website I won't charge for is for the Surf Life Saving Club. But that's cause I them. Sooo much. I will ask that my work is considered "sponsorship" though.

But I'm being serious and trying to give opinions.

The top of the "main gradient" is #79b6d3 (or close), the text is #ffffff.
I ran it though a color contrast checking application, and:

Brightness Difference (should be >=125): 87.9
Color difference (should be >=500): 251
Compliant: No

Even the bottom of the gradient isn't much better:
Brightness Difference (should be >=125): 107
Color difference (should be >=500): 303
Compliant: No

I'm not trying to be an asshole; I'm just saying this color scheme hurts my eyes, not because they're horrible colors, but because there simply isn't enough contrast.

This is one of Vincent's biggest pet peeves and it's one of mine, too.

(Ed.note: My layout doesn't fare so well either, but it's bright on dark, and it isn't being used as a "look, I'm a web designer, please give me work" advertisement)

Absolutely. Charging is really only important if your dealing with clients who you've never met. Doing it as a favour for people/groups/organisations you know quite well is fine.

Also, Xk has some valid suggestions, but they're not really nessessary. If your aim is to have a simple website to show your work, you've done it. Perfection is not nessessary (but it wouldn't hurt).

Hey, you were being really nitpicky . You went into a lot of detail about the things you don't like, but didn't actually say what you liked about it. If it's kind of neat, say why. Besides, the contrast is alright, not optimum, but the colours are well considered and nicely indicate where the reader's attention should be focused. I get more bitchy about "unused" screen space, anyway. I mean, unused by what? There's not enough content there to fill it anyway ;

FYI, I still maintain that a good critique is one that provides both positive and negative feedback, Xkeeper.

As for the contrast thing... maybe. The thing is I want it to be bright and vibrant. I could try darkening it a little more (can't do it today though, about to go to Surf Lifesaving Patrol) but I don't want to kill the bright sunny day blue.

And if the links are drawing your eye, then I've succeeded in my intention there. Your "criticism" just shows me I did what I wanted. The contrast was deliberate there -- to draw the eye to the navigation area.

I guess, but my problem is that it's distracting. It gets my attention, but it doesn't leave me alone.

I think it should be enough to stand out, but not so radically different as to be hard to ignore. (Otherwise, I'd make all my important posts about downtime in giant flashing point-99 font)

You already do that

I'll have to look at the colour stuff later, perhaps when I'm home again. Right now I'm at Mum's, preparing to go to Patrol in a bit.

I find yellow to be a bloody difficult colour to work with in general, but it is the Complimentary Colour to blue. Using a Complimentary Colour IS supposed to draw the eye, as well as create tension and vibrancy.

I tried some Split Complimentary combinations which I didn't like as much at all. I also tried a Triad, and that didn't work at all.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
