A part of me thinks this looks fake... I mean, look at these people: when "hit" by this ray gun, they take several steps backwards...

I dunno... I suppose the only way I can believe it is if they were to test it on me...

Old news. Microwaves have been around since, well, microwave ovens.

They just had to fix the power issues and make sure it wouldn't kill people (Imagine microwaving people and this is what you get)

Yeah this was in the media about a year ago. It's real.
My reaction: Don't care. They'll just start carrying suits of heat resistant armor or something, thus making it useless.

You're hit by a giant beam of energy that you cant see.

What's your first reaction?

Heat resistant armor? No.

They'd need something like a reflector, or, like what they use to seal it in microwave ovens. But, yeah.

That isn't exactly high-tech armor.

The main problem is the huge dish can probably be taken out witha single rock. As it doesn't actually shoot lasers, you can hurl stuff at it easily. Heck, hurl a sealed can of something at it (metal can)--the can would explode violently as it's about to hit the dish.

It's unwieldy and first-generation. Deploying it would be a bad idea.

Sure hope no one takes advantage of that.

I remember reading about this a few months ago. It seems like something the riot police would use rather than the pentagon. I also think a reflector/shield will most likely be made sooner or later, but not until this thing has had its fair share of fights.

The thing is that it's not meant for use in combat, it's for crowd control, I doubt normal people will carry around shields for it. They just need to make it smaller, really, and it'll start to be practical for crowd control. If it's possible to make it smaller.

Oh jeez... Star Trek fans will be drooling... Sooner or later its name will change to the phaser, I know it.

But this doesn't have the awesome laser effects. And it's not fatal. And it doesn't even really knock people out.

In other words, only the ones who actually dislike Star Trek will be concerned about Trekkies calling it such, considering the fact that they never would.

This system has been in development for a while. Seems like it could have some... nasty applications.

Sure it would block it, but it's impractical since you'd need to get a whole mirror to cover your body. If it's not covering you body, it'll get your feet.

I saw a demo of this on 60 minutes. Basically, as long as you're in the beam, you experience extreme pain, but it doesn't actually harm you, just penetrates the skin deep enough that it can trick your nervous system. As for hitting it with a rock, you can't get anywhere near close enough.

Edit:
Here's the video of the story from 60 minutes. (This is the full 12 minutes, as opposed to the clips in the original link)

Full-body mirror. Beware!

You know a simple full body shield would do too...

Saw this on FutureWeapons a while ago , and they just use it to control riots and stuff. The energy is set to shut off far before the person gets injured.
