Heh, it just keeps getting better.

I'll be waiting to see what insanity awaits when they're released. Maybe this time I'll have a chance at discovering something--with so many protos they won't be so quickly searched as, say, when the NA Sonic 2 came out.

The NA Sonic 2 thing was insane- as I recall, there was even a disassembly available after just a few weeks or something like that...

I know that, but the completed NES version of Sim City is likely sitting around at Nintendo HQ. I dunno, it's the charm value of it, I guess.

I have always liked when people find stuff like this. I think that this will provide some insight on what they were thinking about when they were making the published games. I wish there was more protos like this .

Will sell soul for Pokemon Gold proto/beta D8

This is a very incredible find...but what I want to know is why are there so many Sega protos out there? Is Sega just less careful with the proto carts? Why not nearly as many for other consoles?

New screenshot from DRX

It's basically all the zones from Chaotix, kind of in a Sonic CD planet fashion.

It's featured on the back of the Chaotix (J) box and is also in the manual.

Back of box

Manual

It has also been pointed out that the images were taken from separate angles.

I think what happened is that somebody got a hold of the actual development files, not carts; imagine a CD filled with archives of these things.

I'm pretty sure that's about what he got.

Several discs worth of binaries, actually, with a price somewhere in the 5-digit range.

It also makes me very happy to know that some [formerly] one-of-a-kind prototypes rotting in hoarders' closets will soon become significantly less buttery.

This excites me. Also, I got an email today from Sonic Retro reminding me that I haven't logged in in a long time and that drx has acquired all these new protos. I found that funny, since I've been following this all week now. I'd log in, but all I'm doing is reading. I have no intention of posting (since I basically have nothing of value to say there).

It's cool, though. I'm gonna have fun playing around with these...

So. I don't use any kind of torrent client. I'll be waiting a while.

Then again, sounds like a lot of the people using the torrent are waiting a while anyway.

roxahris: Don't forget to put the http:// on your url tags. Otherwise, they're treated as relative links and mess up.

Yeah, I can't (and don't) torrent things either, so I'm hoping someone takes the interesting things and puts them up somewhere more accessible.

Same here... Though I'm sure they'll end up on the usual internet soon enough, it's just that the early bandwidth would probably bring down hidden palace- entirely understandable, just annoying.

A few of the protos have been uploaded here.

The Sonic 2 ones seem a bit... boring. The earliest one uploaded on that site is from 11 days before the final build of the game. Everything else looks like it should be interesting, though.

A lot of these look a *lot* like the final versions. Come on, where are the incomplete levels, different graphics, and scrapped music? I mean, I know I'm probably expecting too much, but it'd be nice to know which protos have the most differences.

Either way, as I edit this for the billionth time, it's nice to have these protos, even if they do look like the final version.

We already have two of the earlier ones (Sonic Wai's and the Nick Arcade one)... this is mostly testers archives, afaik...

Sonic 3C 0408. Has at least a few (Mushroom Hill, Death Egg Act 2)
massively changed layouts. It also lacks a working Doomsday or Death Egg Act 2 extra boss, although that's not very helpful at all.

The earliest Chaotix beta at least refers to itself as "Knuckles' Ring Star", even though I haven't managed to get it to actually run in an emulator past the SEGA screen.

So... yeah. Take it how you will.
