I got one for Christmas this year, and it mostly sat on one of my desk's shelves for quite some time...

iTunes is unfortunately pretty crappy, but I recently got this program called "Floola" to use with it, and it seems to work well.

The battery ended up dead after two months (suprise...), but at least it seems to be working well... it's suprisingly useful once you get it off the computer

Though some things still bug me about it, like the fact there's no easy way to turn it off, and ejecting it from the computer is a pain...

2 simple questions:

1) What kind of Ipod?

2) Have you ever heard of rockbox? Best custom firmware out there for MP3 players.

iPod Nano 3G, and yes, I have, and no, it does not work with mine.

At least, when I checked.

ahhh...

Too bad. Even so, it's good that you found another program to manage your iPod. iTunes has a mind of its own sometimes.

Yeah. It's actually what motivated me to find a new program:

- iTunes is a resource hog that can't use Windows standard widgets and controls, because Apple has to be "fancy"
- Navigational nightmare, difficult to copy own songs
- Trying to re-encode a video I specifically coded for my iPod using MediaCoder

The last one's funny because I copied over the video with Floola and it worked fine (suprise...). Not to mention, iTunes requires there be three programs running in the background all the time, and that is completely unacceptable.

Edit: Actually, RockBox doesn't seem to have made a single update in the past several months. Did the project die?

Hubby got an iPod for his birthday this past January. And I have to say, I love my Zune so much more.

I have an iPod touch... I have been at arms length with iTunes, basically my sister uses it on "her" computer, so I have an account set up on that one and when I want to add music, I transfer the music from "my" computer and load it on over there

iTunes is great—on a Macintosh. But being pretty much just a dodgy port to Windows, the Windows version is really... really... icky icky poo.

And I my million year old iPod.

I think "fancy" in Apple's terminology would be "consistent." Since it probably has the same look and feel on OSX.

There's new builds every couple of days.

Very true. Apple are very funny about their User Interface guidelines. Clearly they consider keeping the User Interface the same across platforms to be more important than conforming to the User Interface guidelines for Windows.

I think it's a tough call really... I would probably have tried to make things more Windowsey for the Windows people though.

We were offered a free iPod when we bought my laptop at school and I initially refused, but for whatever reason my mom insisted on accepting it so she could have it. So we did. She didn't touch it for several months. When she finally did, she ended up installing iTunes on the PC, so I had fun fixing that problem. It seems like a rather annoying device to deal with. :\

Of cours, unlike 99% of the people at this university, I don't feel the urge to listen to every CD of every modern band ever whenever I'm not at home playing it on my speaker system loud enough to keep people in the next room awake.

But I hate to feel like I'm ranting about people who use iPods. I can imagine they'd be useful for stuff like family roadtrips and drives on the bus and stuff. But not every waking second of the day. D:

If I were to go out and buy an mp3 player, I'd never spend the money on an iPod because you're paying for the name. I'd buy some other brand that would probably work just as well and be quite a bit cheaper.

It's not really an issue for me anyway, since I usually have my laptop nearby if I feel like listening to anything.

Wow, seeing all these comments really makes me happy that I didn't win the iPod during the field-trip I was on today , but it's really just iTunes that's the problem right?

I don't really listen to music away from the computer, although my brother uses his PSP to listen to his music while in the middle of class everyday. I may just put some songs on my DS now .

See, I really love my iPod, and iTunes.

But again, I am a Macintosh user, and I freely acknowledge that it is an entirely different experience on Windows. On a Mac, iTunes is nice and responsive, and easy to use. On a PC it becomes irritatingly sluggish and frustrating.

I use my iPod a lot—I work on a Mail shift at work and I listen to it then. I also listen to it on the bus on the way to work or home from work frequently. My particular iPod is a million years old so it's not much good for jogging, it bounces out of its case or out of pockets because it's quite big by iPod standards.

But I love it for work—it's great being able to block out distractions to get things done. I can fly through work when I'm listening to some music.

I wouldn't get an iPod, if only because I know an MP3 player would meet my needs on its own without extra software and such.

If I got one as a gift I'd put custom firmware on it though...

Yeah, rockbox.org.

I made the mistake of reading the "Project News" as if it was actual news on new features/support. Silly me.

I've got a 2007-dated iPod 30GB Black that I bought 'damaged' at a pawn shop for 45 dollars.

The only thing that was damaged about it was the fact that the OS on it was corrupt and the hard drive needed reformatting, the OS needed restoring and Rockbox needed placing on it. Works perfectly now but apparently not too many people know how to fix a relatively simple problem.

The regular iPod software can't even come close to comparing to the RockBox software that's on mine now. I get so much more out of it and it's a big addition to...well, my vehicle.

Also got my step-mother an 8GB Blue Nano (3G) for X-mas. She's pretty much in love with it.
