Wal-Mart will no longer be selling HD-DVD, and it looks like Toshiba is ready to stop fighting.

It's nice that the "format war" appears to be over, I guess. This can only be a good thing for Sony and the PS3, since many people looking for a Blu-Ray player will just get a PS3.

Personally, I won't be buying a high-def DVD player any time soon.

Blu-Ray won the gaming market hands down, it has a lead in burners and blank media too. Only a matter of time for movies.

I have a PS3 along with some of each disc type, but no standalone players on either format.

While it's nice to see this ridiculous format war start to settle down, it's too bad Blu-Ray had to come out on top.

(I guess this is Sony's revenge for the failure of Betamax years ago?)

The format war is not won until we stop using dvds.
(So, another 10 years? Look at VCRs. )

I sure as hell don't plan on moving away from my DVDs anytime soon.
I mean... COME ON! I just managed to teach my mom how to copy them! D:

I have moved on to using portable hard drives for portable media.

Let the Blue Ray win the day. When (holographic evil) disc comes out, they're gonna die pretty quick.

For now, DVDs are the de facto way to copy semi-huge bits of data. Blue Ray would just be too much space for most of my stuff anyway. And a waste otherwise.

$10.25 for a 25 pack of blank DVDs; $15 for a blank Blu-Ray disc.

That's $10 for 118 GB ($0.11 cents/GB) of storage, or $15 for 25 GB ($1.66/GB) of storage.

The "more storage per disc" argument is still valid, but I honestly don't think that blu-ray media is a viable format for user storage yet.

For me, video DVDs are fine. Blu-ray's upgraded quality isn't worth it, and don't forget all the firmware hassles with them...

Really, I could care less about "higher definition." Its a movie, and the content will stay the same. If it's a boring movie it's a boring movie, high-def or not.

Plus I can't tell the difference.

I could tell the difference between DVD quality and Blu-ray quality, but it isn't worth the money. Some blu-ray movies are the same price as DVD movies, so I might buy some. But I'm not going to buy blank Blu-ray disks and make my own.

Typical used DVDs at local pawn shops are like $4, while I've seen new release one disc Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies go for $35. It just isn't worth that.

Hopefully longer. The format is still immensely popular, of course, especially for TV show compilations and other things that don't require HD-DVD's/Blu-Ray's extra features, or need to be produced cheaply in bulk. And let's not forget the PC market, where companies have only recently started distributing their software on DVDs, and CD burners are still common. It'll likely be a safe haven for the format even long after the last movie or TV show is released.

That seems almost kind of iffy. Were there even high-resolution videos back when those were recorded?

If they're just touched up versions, that's an obscene price...

The actual tapes that movies and TV shows are recorded on are much better quality than 1080p HDTV even, so yes, it's real high definition.

Yeah, I just thought Star Trek was just kind of, uh... old. I'd figure they'd have at least worn out

Then again, when you have a cult following, I guess you do whatever you can to keep everything in best shape...

BD-Rs are about as expensive as how DVD-Rs started when they began on the market...horribly overpriced.

See link.

35 bucks for 1 50GB disc.

Toshiba gave up the fight indeed, so HD-DVD is officially dead.

Kind of suprising such an anti-user format like Blu-ray managed to win...

Well, in terms of dev over the years, I heard way more for Blu-Ray than I ever heard for HD-DVD...I'm not really that surprised aside from the fact that Sony won a war for once.

It's not really going to make much of an impact until a year or so down the road, however, since DVDs are still pretty much the affordable route right now and the technology is still fairly new.

The HD-DVD one is the remastered version, with updated special effects and much higher-quality normal shots. It comes on TV on... one of those channels.

I guess I'm happy that the format war is over, and thus it's a good bet that Player A that I buy whenever will be a better long-term investment.

That being said, prices are still too high for my liking, and I don't really record stuff anyway, so I'll wait a while before buying.

I'm just disappointed that it has copy protection, but it's not as if the movie studios would use anything else. :-\
