Apparently, rumor has it that Yahoo wants to merge with AOL instead... you know, this really makes no sense to me- isn't most of AOL's revenue still from the collapsing dial-up service, not from their desperate attempts to become a "portal"? (Which would seem to be what Yahoo! would be most interested in)

I think it'd be a great way to evade a merger--fool them by buying the dying AOL and then continue on their merry way. Anybody who says boo, they can go "But we have AOL! Look, we're doing stuff!" plus in the chaos it'll be harder to try to force a Microsoft buyout.

Like somebody said, it seems to be more of a distraction than a possibility. Buying or merging with AOL would be a very, very bad idea.
