So, after about 40+ days of continuous uptime, Windows decides to bluescreen (NO SURPRISE!), and shit itself.

Corrupt registry. Whoopee. To make matters worse, I can't even boot bootable media on it

I hate everything.

On the other hand, the only thing of real importance on there was hydrabot... and the list of changes I could list between that copy and the one on my desktop are fairly minimal.

Hopefully I won't have to put up with Windows much longer. Maybe.

This is why I keep a complete hard drive backup of my Windows.

If it explodes, nothing is lost except recent changes.

Backup, backup, backup! There is no other guiding principle for data protection. (Well, except for enough security to prevent people from stealing it)

I've had Windows 95 mess up twice like that at the time

- I had a RAMdisk for a while, first set to 20MB (out of 32MB RAM), then lowered it to 3MB to free up some more RAM for Windows/programs/etc. ... then one day I decided to set it to 20MB again (forgot why) and the computer suddenly froze I rebooted only to see it fail to find win.com, then realized the whole Windows folder was corrupted ... I reinstalled Windows on the second partition, copied Windows's files over, ran chkdsk to get most of the files back (desktop, etc.), and all was fine ... or almost, I lost the old wallpaper I drew in Paint the day I got that computer

- About a year later, I forgot how that one happened but Windows glitched up again after a crash, it still ran but a lot of things were broken (corrupted registry?), like I couldn't run Internet Explorer (and some other programs) or even drag&drop ... eventually I installed Windows on the second partition again and it ran fine, except I never got Internet access on it (I had dialup), so I ended up with a dual Windows 95 boot ... broken with Internet access, and non broken without (this stayed for almost a year until I got Windows 98)

At least I've never had problems like this again, I'm even nearing 3 months of uptime now

520 My old Win95 comp... I dunno, the registry kinda fucked up and now Win95 won't boot up.

DOS still works though. ...Not like it matters, when I have two major OSes across 3 systems anyway... WinXP on my main computer and the laptop, and OS 6 on my DS. (I have a Win98 computer too but my mom won't let me try using it yet... it's just a footrest for the time being.)

WinME once just randomly BSOD'd while idling, and when it started up again, ole32.dll was missing, which for some reason meant it couldn't start.

As for XP, it just slowly deteriorates until it's glitching out like mad. It's getting pretty bad right now. Youtube has stopped working (except in fullscreen), and several programs have started crashing when closed. It's long due for a reinstall, but I need to get another server machine up...

520 Hm... Any errors or anything, HH?

Both my computers are running off ~3 year old installs of XP... and they've run fine. The laptop's shitty* but serves its purpose, and the other computer needs a new fan.

*broken USB port, burntout LCD backlight (posting on external 800x600 CRT), dying DVD-RAM drive, sound died recently (melted sound chip?), overheating problems, non-working wifi (I use my PSP and DS for that, anyway... not like I could get wifi around here), dead battery so I have to be VERY CAREFUL NOT TO UNPLUGI T HOLY SHIT AHHHHH...

I could go on but I really don't feel like thinking of more reasons.

I once had Windows98 on my old computer. For some odd reason, it still works perfectly, but since I was messing with some of the parts for it, I don't have a power supply to start it up. Right now, I use XP. It works fine, except that I can't open the Explorer window anymore. It always stops responding before it finishes opening the folder. I also get an error from savedump.exe everytime I turn on the computer. Something about "0xc0000005" or something like that. I also get an error about a ".dll" somewhere. Maybe it's because it is ~6 years old right now, but it makes files harder to move around.

Murphy's law is really kicking my ass today.

My iPod doesn't want to start, I'll put it on charge to see if maybe it had a ded battery. My laptop's Windows install is still FUBAR, but I'll see if I can't try using my recovery console disc to fix it. Failing that, I'll back up what I can and find something else to do with it.

I remember when computers failing made things the "worst day ever".

Now I just call those days "weekdays".

Y'know, my computer's a crappy Dell with only two upgrades (DVD drive, +256MB RAM), running Windows XP, and my last problem with it (other than it needing some more upgrades badly) was two years ago when it got a virus.

I cannot remember the last time I got a blue screen on any computer, but I'm pretty sure it was at some point before high school.

I'm using my computer often for 6+ hours per day when not working, and sometimes after work too.

All this considered, I often wonder how so many people have so many problems with their computers.

Probably because we buy cheap hardware and hack the OS.

I dunno, doing that in my case has led to better, not worse, life. It was my expensive stuff which blew up. My 'last year's technology' rig has yet to suffer anything other than minor problems.

Well, who knows. I usually go maybe 2-3 years between Windows mysteriously corrupting itself, or my hard drive mysteriously corrupting itself, mine's just a silly dell computer with a 7900 GS, that isn't getting enough power. I do wish I had something that I could back up my things on, but I really don't.

Oh man.....this is so ironic...

I was reading this thread, and find out I am late. I hibernated my PC since I was in a hurry. When I get back, Windows refuses to boot up until I beat mercilessly on its reset button. Then, I notice windows is awfully quiet when it's up. My best pair of headphones (100$) are dead. The autopsy showed that the headphone jack has lifted off the board (in the headphones), and the board's top was coming up with it. Now I get to use some extreme backups of mine. Nice and Tinny Nintendo DS earphones that came with my DS starter kit that someone got me as a present.

Whoopie.

All three (?) problems have been resolved.

I rule.

Nevermind. My laptop's harddrive seems to be failing.

UPTIME - [12wks 9hrs 55mins 47secs]

A new record (for me)

The only reason it went down was because somebody thought it'd be a funny joke to rename NTLDR and run shutdown -f.

Keep in mind, I'm often beating up my computer and running tons of things at once, not to mention moving it into another room entirely... I never really saw how so many people had problems with their computers.

(Then again, I guess the rules I follow -- don't fuck with things that work great -- just... works)
