The font used in the menus and title bars looks really nice. Mac OS had some really good ones.

I'd never warmed up to Chicago, the previous Mac OS system font - not in that OS, nor in the SNES games that used it (or something really similar at least...?) as their VWF, like Chrono Trigger. This one tho, Charcoal, I agree is really nice.

Come to think of it, I wonder if the font would work under older versions of the OS. I know you can get the Appearance extension thingy, which does the window themes and whatnot, for System 7, so recreating the look of OS 8 on an older machine running 7.6.1 would be neat to try...

in general, i've always really liked the visual style of macos 8 and 9
the typefaces are really nice...
i still kind of resent both windows xp and mac os x for the really ugly shiny hyper-colorful style they went for
not just because they were both pretty ugly in their own ways (osx less so than xp though i suppose)
but because people getting sick of that sort of design style in both pc and smartphone OSes kind of like,
kickstarted the hyper-exaggerated course correction from skeuomorphic shiny designs that look like hard candy,
to excessively flattened, all-single-color OS designs,
where it's nearly impossible to discern scroll bars, buttons and other ui elements from blank space
when there easily could have been an elegant, decent looking, but usable middle ground
something like, say, the ios 6 music app
it was clean while not being ugly,
an evolution of the design that came before it instead of a design that threw baby and bathwater alike out

it's a real shame, honestly, that we're only just kinda-sorta coming back in the other direction,
with stuff like google's material design on phones, which makes sure buttons and the like are obvious and visible
though it still has its own ux problems (hamburger menus aren't particularly amazing in terms of usability)

i don't really fully remember what i did (it's been a few months) but i recall it mostly it was just a bunch of finagling and following tutorials and reading the qemu manual; there's a qemu PPC emulation tutorial on emaculation that i used as a jumping off point

my batch file (for loading qemu with the right arguments) looks like this, if that helps. an important note is that when you're booting from CD (maybe at all) it'll take like 7 million years to actually load but once you're in you're in.

also, i couldn't get OS X to install no matter what i did (it ran, but the installer crashed at a certain point consistently), but OS 9 seemed to play nicely with these settings

Hello from the Athlonic. Not as old as most of the computers here, but still pretty retro-y to me (it's from ~2000).

It's working again! I had to get new ethernet drivers for it though.

It refused to boot up initially (and it was throwing up BSODs and kernel panics when it did boot), but after replacing the 2 RAM sticks it was using with the 3 spare ones I had, it's back to normal. From 2GB of RAM to 1.5GB, eh it ain't that bad, I'm happier to see that it still works!

Now to see if I can get Debian to install (and work) in it...

the most fun part of this VM messing around stuff has been that a few other julers are installing windows 2000 VMs too and they're sort of also coming up with their own aesthetics. it feels like everyone's getting the chance to express their own individuality, and it's been lots of fun.

Hello from a much newer machine than what I've posted from before, my (currently kinda busted) Athlon XP build running Windows XP and Firefox ESR 45.9.0!

Why "kinda busted"? The Palit/XpertVision GeForce 6600 GT graphics card that was in here stopped outputting anything over DVI, plus it's always been running very hot - like 60°C when idle and around/over 80°C under load - so I've downgraded to a 6200 until I can get a different card... I'm thinking either an ATI Radeon X800 or X850 Pro, or a GeForce 7600 GT. Also have (had?) some other issues, like ex. the HDD momentarily losing power and crashing Windows, that I'm still trying to iron out or confirm are gone...

Anyway, this thing's meant for mid-2000s games and stuff, as well as... an "idealized version" and/or wish-fulfillment of my actual mid-2000s system? Or something. Basically, nostalgia!

I'm using an iBook G4 running Sorbet Leopard, but that's not new, this is my main computer for now until the Hi-Res arrives in a few days. I have a PowerBook G3 with Mac OS X 10.0 DP2 that I want to get online and post here with, as well, and if I can get 8.1 installed on it (it's possible with a hacked Bondi 8.1 install medium) I'll get that online too. May end up buying a Power Mac 7200 that's on eBay that's pretty cheap, that way I can try System 7.

maybe if i wanted an old-browser compatible version of my website i could have some funky user agent detection going on. but i've already taken pride in my website not detecting user agents but instead determining its layout based on screen size, with just CSS

the ideal way I'd do it would be through a separate subdomain so the user gets to choose (kind of like reddit.com / old.reddit.com)

in practice, if I actually had to implement it on bplaced (free host)... I would probably just set it as an option through cookies, and give the user a togglable choice.

i had some insane redirect system for a brief period where it would detect the user agent, then include the homepage based on it, and you could go to /mobile or /desktop to override. it sucked and i found just having a responsive layout be much easier

i haven't ever written code to set a cookie, either. i mean, having cookies is kinda silly just for a personal static site anyway...
