Hello, so I've been looking into Sega Genesis ROMs for some time, for personal reasons. I've got a dumper machine and I've been trying it out for a bit, among other ideas that I have. So growing up I've been playing Sega's Football Italia '90 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and been chasing up what the story and history of the game, which I was surprised to find.

Anyways, I've been rom hacking for a bit and for the Sega Genesis, trying to understand what's going on, I've got used too. So I wouldn't have to ask around how Sega Genesis handle their data and etc.

So, I've with Sega Genesis games, there's a chuck of data that doesn't get tapped or is tough to open or modify. These aren't part of the tile set like games found for NES. Sega labels them as patterns. These however can be opened in the Gens emulator, to view the data which are used as character sprites and etc, all presentable and in their color palette.

So I had taken a look at Football Italia 90/World Championship Soccer, just to have a look and I found tiles that I never seen before.



So I was taking a good look and apparently, I've discovered that the game still holds data that never made it into the game. During the actual FIFA World Cup 90, they had billboards and Sega decided to model and add billboards onto the football pitch in the game but it seems that many of the billboard decorations went unused but somehow they are still in the game data.



You notice the side billboards made it into the game:




So I've pieced together some of the boards to find out what was said. It is clear they parody actual companies like Coca Cola (spelled Coco Cola), Camon for Canon prints. Fuji Film getting parodied. The current billboards that made it into the game, "Gillett" and "Bridgetone" you notice how they render them bit by bit, to give an idea how they have been spilt up and placed into the game memory.



No idea if they made it into the game and Sega decided to just crop the tops and bottoms off because I believe this is where the billboards/banner boards were meant to go and maybe they were cut from the game.



The adverts were clearly taken from the adverts seen at major football events, as seen here in a World Cup 90s even England vs Belguim. I was able (and lucky enough) to get a DVD with England football events during the 90s, as they had two features matches from the World Cup 90 which are hard to get and even lucky because other DVDs featureing the events cost a lot.



You could barely see the Fuji Film sign on the left. You notice the Gillette sign in the match that made it into the game as Gillett. There was also a Coca Cola sign in the match, not in that screen shot but in the match.

I noticed it not on the wiki page, so maybe there's room to add that in?

I'll try to get all the boards together and maybe construct how it may look like and also pair the boards together wtih the boards found in the actual event as I have material for that. Loads of other boards to put together and pair. Phillps and the others. Should have seven or eight in total. I hope this help and I'm not jumping into anything.

Neat. I'm not really familiar with the game, but I booted it up in Exodus and looked at the plane viewer, and there they are. I'm guessing the game does render the billboards, but the camera just doesn't go high/low enough to actually see them.



(It's also pretty tricky to see even this much in the plane viewer.)

Aw, I somewhat neglected what I typed but I see that's an easy way with the plane viewer. I suppose that went somewhere. I should double check the ROM because Sega Genesis games have a security measure that doesn't allow anyone to view the tiles so easily. Thanks. Really! I'll post more references in future. They are billboards from football matches in the late 80s and maybe had the idea to get the license in the game in mind as they developed the game, that is my best guess.

Personally, I played the game a lot when I was growing up. It's just select country and kick off and it is just that one field and that's it. Even during the tournament mode, it's always played on that field. It caught my attention because I never seen the tile sets when I looked at the ROM file and pieced them together a bit and had that theory about the billboards being there but the camera not panning enough (with everything else I read about Sega games).

Maybe worth double checking, I grew up with Mega Games 1, I've seen the game on Mega Games 6. It's the first time I've seen them. Maybe a second opinion considering how many times the game was re-released!? Only the boards on the side of the game are seen by the player in the game, the other boards on the top and bottom of the pitch don't appear. The camera panning ends before ever seeing them.

I doubt they intended to get the real licenses. Sega always used "parodies" of brands for their billboards which looked... dangerously close to the real thing... during this time. It eventually got them into legal trouble with Marlboro.

But as long as they aren't normally visible to the player, then I'd say they still count as unused.

Ah true, that makes sense, I remember how they used those boards in Super Hang On. Something I can do however, I can check the Japanese release of the game at least as it was the first release to see if they are there. Maybe they wouldn't but I'll double check.

Anyways, I hope that helps. I only checked the data when I ran it in an emulator for fun and I really wanted to post that here. That's all I have. Thanks again. It did make my day seeing the boards in the plane viewer.

I wonder when that happened.
At least in the US, putting cigarette brands in a video game might've run afoul of cigarette advertising laws (banned from TV since the '70s, don't know if a video game would still count as "TV").
Considering the Final Fantasy series had a stinky plant that was blatantly a parody of that company, and they used a variety of knockoff names for it.

I can't speak for other countries but the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement here in the United States forbids tobacco advertising that targets young people, which would most certainly include video games.

The lawsuit against Sega happened in 1991 and mostly centered around Super Monaco GP. Philip Morris got criticism for advertising to kids through video games. They went to Sega to agree to remove them, which they apparently didn't do, which lead to the lawsuit.

Thing is, the banner in the game actually said "Marlbobo"...

...but it went by so quickly, you probably wouldn't tell at a glance.


Here's an old news article and a quote from it:
AP News: Philip Morris Vows Action To Remove Marlboro Logos From Video Games
Rory Radding, a trademark attorney in New York, said Philip Morris would be within its rights in taking legal action to prevent the use of its logo.

″My recommendation to the guys doing the video is they better watch out,″ he said. ″That is definitely sue-able.″

″Trademarks go not only to the name but to the look, what’s called the trade dress,″ he said. ″If you didn’t see the Marlboro name but you just saw those colors, you’d say ‘That’s Marlboro.’ ... If Philip Morris decides it’s important enough to them, they’ll bring an infringement suit.″


So yes, Sega basically took the same font, colors, and triangle design shape and just changed one letter. It might've passed parody law in Japan, which is pretty loose there afaik, but walked a dangerous line elsewhere. I don't think Sega was that brash with their fake advertising after this.

From what I understand, the Marlboro logo was pretty commonly used on Japanese racing game cover arts in the '80s, even Nintendo did that on the Famicom F-1 Race box. (due to the popularity of a particular sponsored driver? Was it Ayrton Senna, the same guy Sega got to endorse their Monaco GP games? That might explain things.)

Yeah, maybe that's the case, I notice the Camel cigarettes being parodied on the board as Cawdy and didn't want to include the other boards if the companies rushed to get at Sega and sued.

That would make sense, since Senna drove for Ferrari and Marlboro was one of Ferrari's primary sponsors for a long ass-time.

It may have been banter and maybe to push in the game final release. The grown men at Sega making games who had to play test the game placed that in their for fun and known that they can clip off the boards off the screen if the company who were being spoofed had an issue. (I wish I had said that sooner) I mean adverts spoofing Gillette and Bridgestone tires? I'm not sure which kids would want thoses. Still good seeing the other boards in there fully put together. I mean they managed to get the colors right on the 16-bit console and no graphic glitching or miscolor or anything.

Coca Cola and Seiko watches? I remember when I was a kid, the schools banned sugary drinks because the kids were being hyper-active. Maybe a staff at Sega had kids who had went to school and they were told no sugary drinks. Yes, very suggestive. Parent don't want a game like that for their kids. Yeah, I would think it stems from the tobacco company not wanting to be featured in a video game.

On my personal note, I think it's great. This game barely gets any attention and has been slammed for being too much of a mimic and low quality with the birdeye view as it doesn't look like the football matches on TV and it was quickly dated with the other soccer game releases. I mean I see the other games on the Genesis that has the spotlight like Streets of Rage and Sonic 2 but this game doesn't seem to cool as them, so yeah, I'm glad I hadn't messed it up. Hehehe. I mean it's almost too silly and funny but I think it's interesting. Sega must have really tired not to make the game look and be as boring. they really wanted to sell this game for sure. Hehe.
