I've been looking back over the Diddy Kong Pilot 2001 ROM lately. Back when it leaked, there was some effort to datamine it, but it was fairly short-lived... which is too bad, because there's actually quite a lot still kicking around in here. As explained in this post, all of the debugging symbols are still in the ROM, which makes it very easy to locate unused assets: ![]() ![]() Menu icons seen in the Spaceworld demo. ![]() Leftover E3 icon. ![]() A course preview that never shows up in the game itself. The filename is small_haunted, so it might have been for the creatively-named Haunted Race. ![]() Hand-drawn placeholder art for the character select screen. Interestingly, Krunch is missing and Funky's here instead of Redneck/Candy, showing that he (at least initially) survived the Spaceworld purge. The filename for this, amusingly, is twit_bunch. ![]() Japanese names for Magma Mainland, Chicken Chase, and three others I'm not 100% sure of (Bounty Beach/Jet Set Jungle/Lake Race?). ![]() Japanese menu options: Race, Start Piloting(?), Select Course, Select Controls, Movement Method, Sensor, D-Pad. ![]() A Japanese version of the message used when selecting tilt controls ("Lay the GBA flat and press A"). ![]() These are meant to show up next to the track preview, and I guess they indicate your best attempt at the race. Only the thumbs-up (handcoin) is used. Some graphics that are proving too tedious/difficult to assemble at the moment: -Sprites for an animated intro sequence, with Diddy and K. Rool flying around and/or chasing each other. -Aside from being on the select screen, Candy also has a battle mode portrait. -Sprites for unused items, including many blank placeholders. Other things of interest: -Mattrizzle already found the graphics for K. Rool's Gold, but the story text for it is still intact as well. I've dumped it in my sandbox for the time being, since posting it here would probably break the character limit. -A minor filename oddity: the track preview icon for Dark Tower is named krools_dark_tower internally. Might've been cut for space, or maybe because the preview image makes it pretty obvious whose tower it is. -Possibly extra music tracks? There's data for instruments that don't show up in the title screen theme, along with some suspicious-looking filenames:
The 2003 build might also have some content, but since that one was almost finished, it's not as easy to crack open. That said, I did find developer credits, including a hilariously self-deprecative version after the normal one. I guess it shows (or was supposed to show) up after you beat the game as Team Cranky? That or Rare was just venting. Maybe both. (The very last letter in both sets is cut off-- not my goof, it's stored that way in the ROM)
