Jul Advent calendar for December 18:


Today, from kingdomakrillic.tumblr.com, we have images—low-resolution prerendered video game backgrounds—scaled up with ESRGAN.

ESRGAN stands for Enhanced Super-Resoution Generative Adversarial Network. A GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) is two neural networks pitted against each other (thus "adversarial"). The way a GAN works is:
- The first neural network (Generator) generates new things, like ice cream flavor names or photos of cats.
- The second neural network (Discriminiator) tries to tell whether these creations are "real" (e.g. an actual ice cream flavor or cat photo) or "fake" (made up by the first neural network).
- Furthermore, neural networks are typically trained on a dataset beforehand, e.g. a list of existing ice cream flavors or a bunch of cat photos.

So in this case, if I am understanding correctly:
- The first neural network is given low-resolution background images from video games, and from them it generates high-resolution backgrounds.
- Then the second neural network is given the high-resolution backgrounds, and it tries to tell whether they were originally high-resolution to begin with ("real") or if they were generated ("fake").
In essence, the first neural network tries to fool the second neural network.

I'll be honest, that's a really clever usage of neural networks. I knew of them being used to generate and categorize images, but I hadn't realized they could also be used as an advanced scaling algorithm (even though it can produce weird results sometimes and generally leaves weird artificial patterns in the image). And here I was thinking that xBRZ was basically as good as it got!

Not gonna lie though, the amount of stuff neural networks are capable of doing kind of scares me just a bit.

Jul Advent calendar for December 19:


The holidays are a season of giving. And my siblings live way far away, are kind of hard to shop for, have enough stuff already, and are concerned about current events and the state of the world...

So for Christmas/the holidays, I like to donate to charitable organizations on behalf of my siblings, letting them choose the organizations.

PROS:
- As I said before: A good gift for those who have enough stuff and are concerned about the world
- Can do it last-minute
- No shipping costs!
- Most donations are tax-deductible, so they can reduce your taxes if you take the time to itemize at tax time

CONS:
- There are so many charities out there good and bad, so it'll take some research
- After you donate, it's likely you will receive some crap in the mail regularly. (All these letters asking for money make me not want to donate...)


On researching charities:
If you decide do do donations on behalf of recipients, then either
- you'll be choosing a charity for them, or
- the recipient will choose a charity, but in most cases you'll want to give guidance anyway so they don't have to work as hard.
- (Or my recommendation: ask them what issue concerns them, then find a good charity for it.)
And yeah, there are like a fuckton umptillion charities, not all of which are good.

Now, before I move on, I have some advice: If you're new to charity giving, don't worry too much about choosing which charity to give to. Don't feel pressured to go through every list. It's better to make a quick choice than to become overwhelmed and end up not giving at all.


Can you just choose a charity for me please, no fuss?
Alright, will do. GiveWell figures out which charities are most effective at saving lives per dollar donated, as well as which will benefit the most from further donations. If you give to GiveWell, they will donate to these top charities "according to where our research suggests your donation will do the most good." (100% of your donation will go to the top charities and none to GiveWell itself, unless you specifically choose the 10% tip option.)


How can I choose and evaluate charities?
If you don't have any specific charities in mind, any one of the following links will help:

- Charity Watch's Top Rated Charities, listed by category.
- Charity Navigator's Charities with Perfect Scores, listed by category
- Consumer Report's Best and Worst Charities for Your Donations, listed by category

Today is National Regifting Day in the United States. It takes place each year on the Thursday before Christmas.


What is regifting?
Regifting is when you take a gift that's been given to you and repurpose it as a gift to someone else.


Why regift?
The popularity of regifting is driven by many things for different people. For some, it’s thrift in difficult economic times, or it’s a way to get around annoyingly high expectations about gift-giving. It’s also awareness of, or guilt over, how much stuff goes into the landfill. But the main reason might be just the sheer volume of stuff we have.

Is regifting common?
In a 2014 American Express survey, 76% of respondents deemed re-gifting as an acceptable practice, 42% divulged that they had re-gifted in the previous year (up from 32% in the previous year). The items that are most commonly re-gifted include kitchenware, sweater, and electronics. Not surprisingly, the same study found that friends and co-workers are usually the beneficiaries of the re-gifts.

Won't regifting offend the person who gave me the gift?
In a study published in Psychological Science, researchers found that when it comes to re-gifting, those who receive the gift (and re-gift it) known as “receivers” overestimate the reactions of those who give the gifts known as “givers.” The researchers conclude: “Although receivers felt that givers were entitled to have a say in what happened to their gifts, givers felt that receivers were entitled to do whatever they liked with a gift. In short, the taboo against regifting was felt more strongly by receivers than by givers.”

If you're unsure and still want to regift, you can regift in a different circle of friends than the one you received it from. Also, sometimes you'll run into situations where you probably shouldn't regift, like with family heirlooms, people who take the time to pick out or make things specifically for you, or stuff with your name on it.


What about the feelings of the person receiving the regifted gift?
I'd say put the same thought into choosing a regifted gift as you'd put into buying one from the store, avoiding outdated gifts (like old technology) and taking into account whether the recipient would like it or not. Also, it's a good idea to unwrap the gift and check for anything with your name or the giver's name on it (stray cards, nametags, etc) before rewrapping.


I don't know how to feel about regifting.
Well, you don't have to let me or society decide for you, you can choose your stance! Some people don't want to risk potentially awkward situations with friends and relatives, and that's okay. Some people regift and keep it a secret (although the guides below recommend admitting it if someone asks), others are more open about it. As for me, I don't see a need to mention when I've regifted, but if someone brings it up, I'll be like yeah.

The winter soltice is associated with many holidays throughout the world, including Yule, the Dongzhi Festival, and Blue Christmas.


Yule, also known as Yuletide, is an ancient Germanic pagan holiday. ("Germanic" refers to ancient northern and western European peoples that spoke Germanic languages, the precursors to languages like English, German, and Swedish.) According to one description, livestock would be sacrificed at the heathen hof (Germanic pagan temple), the meat of the sacrified animals would be boiled and served at the feast, the blood of the sacrified animals would be smeared and sprinkled all over the place, and of course there would be a lot of drinking of ale. The first toast would be drunk to Odin, and some of Odin's many names reference Yule, like jólfaðr ("Yule father") and jólnir ("the Yule one").



Yule was later assimilated into Christianity, where it became known as "Christmastide." In many languages the word for "Christmas" is very similar to "Yule" (such as "jul" in Swedish), and Christmas traditions such as the Yule log, Yule ham, and Yule singing all have roots in pagan Yule traditions.

However, today Yule is celebrated in Heathenry and some other forms of Modern Paganism (aka Neopaganism). Different forms of Neopaganism celebrate Yule differently, with some sticking to Ancient Germanic traditions and others gathering different rituals from various sources.
