Not sure if this would go better in the "computers" forum, but I'm curious about more than just the technical side of it. I've been running a little Prosody server of my own for a while now, and though it's a little rough in some ways, it's my favorite means of one-on-one communication. Do any of you use it? Run it? What clients and server software do you use?

I think it's fine here (to be honest the other forums could probably all get merged into this one anyway, since they aren't active) ...

I haven't used it after Google Talk killed their federation for it, but I've been thinking of picking it up; it seems fairly simple to manage, at least compared to other "do it yourself" things, and having total control over my own messages would certainly be nice.

I've thought about the possibility of having one tied to the board's accounts and whatnot, but I'm not sure how feasible that is, especially given the different login systems and the difference between what some people would want as a "username" versus a "display name".

I think it would be possible -- I have an acquaintance who has looked a bit into forum integration for something like this. I could hit him up later, since I've forgotten what he went with in the end.

It's fairly lightweight and simple, there are multiple methods of encrypted communication using it (with patchy support for OMEMO sadly, though maybe that'll get better after a bit longer), and it's just...nice not to have your ability to talk to your friends tied to anyone else's hosting.

The hosting burden is a lot higher, but Matrix is okay... What do you mean by modern exactly, though?

I do think I prefer XMPP by a pretty wide margin atm -- hosting is easy, it's not browser-based in really any regard, there's plenty of mature client and server software to meet different people's requirements... But any move away from centralized services makes me happy, honestly.

Yeah, XMPP is proven stable and as I said works anywhere fine, and alot of users here would want to chat using older devices sometimes most likely :p

I feel like Matrix is trying to be an "everything" ecosystem like Discord, Slack, etc... it's not just instant messaging, but also (on some level) groups, then "rooms", then "communities", then of course video calls and other things... It's the kind of thing that feels like it has to be a gigantic, heavy client, instead of a more typical instant messenger that was much more lightweight and ephemeral.

Maybe that's what people want out of it, and that's fine, but like e-mails, I just what that to be... email. It's good for conversations, it's good for limited group conversations, and so on. I don't need it to be a constantly-updating feed of everything.

IMO "one tool for one job" is a good thing, yes. It lowers the burden on individual maintainers or groups of maintainers, limits the damage if something self-destructs or peters out... etc.

Another thing I like about XMPP is the huge battery of clients to choose from -- any one of profanity, mcabber, gaim, bitlbee, conversations, etc. meets the needs of someone who would be more frustrated with the other options. A pretty good proportion of these are light years away from the electron/JS mess everything else is running headlong into. Of course, some of the sideline features like file transfer sometimes suck between different clients. I should see if I can get past that one of these days.

Also, their claim of "we've not ended up in a world where everyone has a SIP URI or Jabber ID on their business card" is kind of strange from my point of view as my business card actually has my SIP URI and Jabber ID on it, and I know plenty of organizations whose email addresses are also valid SIP URIs and/or Jabber IDs for those users. The question is whether or not those SIP domains accept calls through random gateways and those Jabber domains have open XMPP federation.

nb: I don't maintain our collab infrastructure at work so I don't actually know if you can just dial my SIP URI from anywhere. I think we have open XMPP federation though.

@hydra yeah, the amount of clients is amazing, though it's a tad annoying that there isn't a good one for ios (mobile XMPP will drain batteries without relying on external notif services afaik)

but on the desktop it would be nice. anyone know a good one that's compatible with XP/Vista other than Pidgin?
