i think part of the problem for me is that i never initiated conversation. i always felt like i'd just be bothering someone. i never had a phase in my life where i felt really comfy just messaging other people with w/e, but lots of other people did to me
that was my favorite thing. when i'd get a message from a random AIM name and it's just some random content i don't know anything about and i'm like "uhh who?" and they're like "oh this is x from so-and-so" and i'm just like "oh! neat"
i don't even really lurk in discords anymore except a couple i just don't talk to anyone really
dearly. remember back when you could have status messages and say like "i'm here but feeling like shit" or "out at lunch i'll be back later" or "now listening to Track01.mp3"
and you'd be able to see who was around, see people pop online and go "now might be a good time to say hi" or even just wait, or whatever
(or of course turn that all off and just be online forever, or be invisible, and so on)
it was a one-to-one time. even smaller group chats were similar ... now that everyone's Always Online™ it's hard to feel comfortable messaging someone, since there's not even controls on how to handle that. i remember Trillian letting you decide to, say, play a special tone for new message windows versus a different beep for existing windows.
that kind of conversation also allowed you to get deep into thoughts and have a meaningful discussion about what was on your mind, even if it was just like. "cherry pie is good". what about it? favorite type of crust? last made one five years ago but want to do it now?
instead it's just ... throwing everything out into the void. you don't talk to people, you talk
at them.

you guys ever get that feeling to archive stuff? ever since ROM files started to get scarce, my need to archive stuff for future use is rising faster than ever. it would be a shame to lose stuff i put so much time into years ago. i really dislike using cloud services since they usually have the mindset of ui design over functionality and i really like having physical storage rather than the usual digital solutions.
now that has a setback cause everything is produced so cheaply now, they're bound to corrupt in 2 minutes.
Time to get a NAS and set it up with a RAID array! It'll "only" cost you a thousand bucks or so if you want one of good quality.
I've never been that good at archiving or backing up things, which is a bit surprising given my history.
Bowsette has taken over the internet!
Hooooo lordy.
