After all these years I'm finally in college at the age of 43, I enrolled here for 2D Animation. It's time that I do something with my cartoons and bring them to life, once I get to learn all the stuff I need to learn, I plan to submit my work to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon as well as TV networks.

I'll be going to college for four years, and I'm doing it all online. So far I'm in two classes.

I wanna ask you guys about online college, have you guys ever did it? How did you focus? So far in my classes I posted in a few places in their forums.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "online"; when I took some online classes 13 years ago, most stuff was still as if it was a live classroom with a schedule you had to 'check in' during, then some live talking and whatnot, then timed assignments.

Depending on how it works, I'd say just keep a separate device or account on a computer for doing online coursework, that doesn't have all of your usual distractions on it.

going off of this, I'd dedicate time away from home if you can. if I really needed to get something done, I'd head over to a library or coffee shop and start working there.

beca use of that need I was never good at online classes--I needed that in-person push to get shit done, and I'd refuse to go home, even if it was a short walk away, so I could actually maintain some productivity.

I generally did worse in online classes. doing shit from home is just not for me, but others have it clearly figured out or are just more... able and have the discipline to do so

edit: also yo CONGRATS ON GOING TO SCHOOL holy shit! that's rad

I'd argue more towards libraries than coffee shops, just because the latter can be loud and obnoxious. At least, the ones here can be. Plus, libraries are pretty chill and you get an environmental bonus, since it's just like school.

Having spent a good two-ish years almost entirely at home while doing the tail end of my PhD, I can certainly give a few hints:

My biggest piece of advice is to get a dedicated work area at your home. Then only use it for work. One of the biggest problems of working entirely online and by correspondence with supervisors/educators is that there's a huuuuge amount of bleed between your work life and your home life. You'll need to put up very strong walls for that separation otherwise it ruins your downtime and you don't rest well. With this comes the need to set a routine. It becomes very tempting to just poke at your work when you feel like and you can become sloppy and complacent and you tend to sort of engross yourself in unproductive busywork for hours and call it work.

Make sure you have a dedicated day off too! I was doing absurd hours at one point (I got to 100+ a few times), but I managed to get through it because I'd always take a weekend day off at minimum. You do need the rest. I don't expect a course like yours would be quite that absurd in terms of time, but it's still worth keeping an eye on. I learnt a lot of focus related tips that worked for me, the most important thing was that when I was getting tired and distractable that I actually took a proper break and then went back to work. No point flogging yourself if you've stopped being productive, better to recover for a short while (in however works for you, I drank a lot of nice tea and played short videogame sessions).

And finally, enjoy it as much as you can! You're studying something you want to! This is a cause of celebration!

Good job man, I'm in college at 16 (that's how it works in the UK), enjoying it so far. Hope you meet some good people and learn a lot on your course

I'm actually surprised you haven't been working in the industry for 20 years already! Your stuff was great when I first saw you probably a decade ago now.

As for college advice... Well, not really specific to online courses but just keep at it, no matter how impossible it seems. And talk to your instructors as much as possible! Since you're all online you'll be missing out on some of the networking you would normally get at a physical university.

Just keep talking to people, and send your portfolio out often! Good luck, I can't wait to see you streaming!

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
