Discord and Steam feel like two definitive things to add, though I am sorta not sure about whether we should add Masto/Twitter as well. I'm just mainly concerned that some... wise guy, let's put it... may try to troll one of us publicly. I don't know why I have a deep enough concern for this that I'm doubting adding these two websites, though if I'd hazard a guess, probably the "it's annoying" factor. Though if one was concerned about that they could just... not fill it in.

I also second the changing the field sex to gender.

Nothing is stopping from making those contact fields appear only when logged in, by the way. Plenty of forums have entire profiles behind login walls for privacy.

anyway, what about customizable open fields, where you can enter anything as key and anything as value? it would probably automatically solve the "what fields you want" issue, though there should be some limits to how far you can go with it

Giving people complete control over usernames is.... yeah, probably not happening. Maybe as a perk for some achievement, but not just randomly.

the way I currently set it up is for powerlevel 1 or higher, mainly because of a certain mess I saw elsewhere where people were allowed complete control

but hey, it would give some more flexibility with how custom name colors are handled so it's not a completely negative misfeature for once

This is actually the exact thing I was thinking of, but maybe with some JS to allow you to add additional ones.

I can do it, but I don't know exactly what is needed. Do you want the user to be able to type in anything as their custom social media or just select from a pre-defined list, where you can add new ones if you want to?

Also, that select wouldn't be able to submit multiple social media sites at a time...

Unless you mean the person would select from a list, then they can click an "Add" button and add another field to select another social media site.

i think if we're going to add extra profile fields:

- good ones: Telegram, Discord, Steam, Twitter, Mastodon. those seem to be the most commonly used/requested. imood if it still works cuz it's fun, but i had some trouble last time. i like the idea of Instagram, but i'm not sure enough people would use it in practice. maybe Facebook -- i have reservations because it feels like encouraging people to list something that's so tied to irl stuff is a bad idea, but also i feel like the decision on whether to share is ultimately up to the user, so...

- an option to add your own label (i.e. custom fields) would be great, but i'm not sure how practical that would be, and it might require some SQL finagling i guess (store everything in a serialized array or sth in a like generalized "contactinfo" text row or w/e? not like we're not gonna have to add extra rows anyway, tho, or at least repurpose old ones, so...)

- hide anything that isn't being used on profile.php instead of showing a blank space


also, fixing the gender field should be a priority. decoupling gender/username color seems like the best idea. gender/pronouns for one field, and either a hex username color or a few default ones for the other. if we go with default ones, i like the colors RanAS suggested with variations for staff members. i dunno how hard user-selectable hex username colors would be given that (spoilers) custom usernames right now are a hack that just use extra genders. if that'd be too hard to code around, we might wanna let everyone select a default color then give hex colors to people who've been around for a while and request them

if we can't accomplish that, i think the simplest thing would just be fixing things on the frontend, e.g. "Sex" -> "Gender" and "Unspecified" -> "Unspecified or Other"? i'm not sure exactly how to word it, but non-binary people should really be acknowledged at least in some way...

(random fact: jul's "sex" array goes up to 255 so that means that in practice jul has 255 genders, which is the number of genders irl so that works out well)

The field was already renamed in the edit profile page:

Gender:
This determines your name color (for now).


I know it isn't quite fixed elsewhere yet, but I'm trying

Decoupling gender-setting from name color is... not really easy right now, just because it's all over.

why do you need to decouple it rather than just have a new field that (ideally) displays in the sidebar? Just rename the label of what's currently "gender" to "name color" and make a new "gender" field.

But in technical reasons the variable is passed around everywhere. I could probably make it something on the edit-profile page and profile pages easily, but adding it to e.g. threads would be a little harder.

The thing-that-controls-name-color field, you mean? Let it be passed everywhere. Just put "name color" as the label. Just because you used to call it "gender" or the code calls it "gender" doesn;t mean you have to use it as that. There are only 255 possible values? Ok, use preset color names with a dropdown. No need for free entry.

Then have a new, different field labeled "Gender pronouns (for example, 'he/him'):" and have it be free text entry limited to x-many characters and displayed in the sidebar, like a copy of custom user title which you already have.

No, no, the name color thing can stay being called "sex" in the database and code and we can just reference it as the name color. Fitting "gender" in everywhere will be more difficult outside of adding it to the profile and profile editing pages.

"Just pass it along everywhere" is slightly more complicated than it sounds because iirc in a lot of cases the individual components of the data are passed. I might be wrong. (But do we really need to show gender on every post, too? I can see how it would be useful, but...)
