also in regards to if you're exposing you rself to bad shit--if you're selective on who you follow, twitter can still be an enjoyable experience as long as you don't dive into political posts. kind of a head in the sand sort of thing maybe--or just curating your experience and cutting out all the toxic shit

I never had to follow many people using Twitter, and nobody ever cared for what I posted there (probably because posting things sporadically is not something the algorithm likes), so that's more or less what happened to me. I guess not paying attention to the news kind of is burying your head in the sand, but if the alternative is having a bunch of angry people yelling at each other (and potentially you) and next to no possible way to calm them down, I prefer burying my head in the sand.

Social media has a bunch of cool things being shared as well, it's just easily drowned out by all the arguing.

I personally hate, hate, HATE when apps start beeping and booping my phone for any reason. I've even shut down WhatsApps notifications, even when I receive them maybe once or twice a week. This definitely doesn't affect me, since I'm sort of a "power" user compared to your average smart phone user.

i got bored of my smartphone and barely use it now unless i’m chatting w/ someone, which is often on my computer anyway. my tip is to get a smaller and more inconvenient model and only have the apps that you actually need. i never put games on mine.

also, i barely consume ppl’s content, more just putting content out there. i hardly see anything exciting anymore, so it’s w/e. i’ve had several posts go viral already, so notifications are p. mundane to me.

I used to get notifications for whenever my friends posted on tumblr, and I would spend hours and hours a day in the app, just looking at all the stuff they posted.

Then one day, the notifications stressed me out, so I disabled them.

I suddenly (and unintetionally) went from using tumblr 4 hours a day to 0 hours a day, and basically have only gone back to say "woops sorry for disappearing, but I'm spending more time talking to my friends instead of on here, sorry"

After a couple of months of barely using it, I deleted the app from my phone.

I haven't really done anything real with my tumblr since the net neutrality stuff began. I only log in to view nsfw marked blogs sometimes. Otherwise I never use it.

I can understand this in the case of Facebook - yeah, some people you can only get in touch with using Facebook Messenger. But Twitter or Mastodon aren't chat platforms. Surely they use some IM to talk...?

I barely use Twitter... and I'm not on Facebook either. There's some interaction I have with people on Telegram/Whatsapp on my phone, but that usually related to school stuff.

I don't really use my phone that much, and the only real app that has the annoying nagging would be Twitter's.

Found the notification options in Mastodon a few days ago, so I did as X did and turned off the ones for favourites/retoots. Although still nice, it's remarkable how little they suddenly matter.

I think the best thing I did about a year ago was to disable all Facebook notifications.

Before I already only hat notifications of messenging apps like SMS, Whatsapp, E-Mail and sometimes Skype.

Now, after reading this thread I muted all group notifications and will start filtering my E-Mail better to weed out the rest of Newsletters and update mails from my notifications.
