I think at least part of the problem is that, with the internet being more interconnected than before, our "visibility" has increased a lot. It's difficult to step outside of the "norm" because that often brings ridicule and conflict, which is something most people try to avoid.

I noticed this when people started saying I had to be "brave" or "courageous" to write the things I've talked about. My response was just, somebody has to. (This is even more true with the number of people who have commented on how my writing has helped them in some way.)

Even if it opens myself up to bad things, I still feel some duty to talk about them.

It's my forum and I'll double post if I want to, dangit

A more generalized way to put this (that might make more sense):

In choosing to do something: reply, write, whatever — you are effectively opening yourself up for critique, commentary, criticism, but most importantly, changing how people think about you. In this way, especially if you have low self-confidence already, to decide that not saying anything is the best course of action: unlike physical spaces, there isn't any expectation of conversation or awkward silence if someone doesn't talk. And by not talking, you risk basically nothing*; you cannot change someone's mind without doing something.

(* There are cases where this does not apply, but only where you are expected to take action; e.g. if you are a leader or person in some form of power, choosing to not act in the case of a crisis is a very bad idea indeed...)

That could be another reason why I say very little on Twitter these days. It's not just that I'm opening myself up to possible abuse, but… I don't want to be perceived as my PPD. I'm finding there's a very narrow range of things to talk about and a lot of them are negative…

You can also use longform writing to surround what you write with the proper context; for example, "This is some words I wrote while suffering from a particularly bad depressive episode". Doing that in smaller footprints like FB or Twitter (or even somewhat larger ones like Masto) is difficult if not impossible.

E: It's also much harder to be taken out of context than it is on Twitter-likes; you can't just have a tiny part of your post RTed easily. You still can via screenshot, but it's nowhere near as easy as it is to copy a tiny part of a thread.

i think i've never been able to properly write my thoughts into longform

i've tried to keep a physical written journal a few times and i never ended up anywhere

the closest thing to a blog i've had were tumblr and twitter (now mastodon)

Yeah, I felt I was taken out of context a lot, and then I'd wind up going down this rabbit hole explaining that I do love my son, I'm just experiencing PPD for a variety of reasons and they are nothing to do with him.

It's so fun to realize that as much as we all hate "sound-bite culture" around politicians, we're all part of it now thanks to the tiny chunks on social media

I have a blog, but it's mostly reserved for when I find something interesting to talk about and/or explain, rather than my thoughts and life and experiences and such. As you can see, it has a total of 6 posts in 1.5 years, none of which are about me or my personal life.

I feel like I might need to create a place somewhere for posting what I've been thinking about as well, just typing whatever I feel like to try and organize myself a little bit better. At the same time, I'm not sure that's a good idea. I frequently have to read and re-write a lot of the things I say as it is to make them more comprehensible. Posting thoughts as they appear, in my case, seems like a good way to just end up spouting random nonsense. And if I give it more thought than usual, then it ends up being a task complicated enough to make me just want to do other things instead.

Sometimes if I'm thinking about something and I really really really want to think more about it I'll just start writing and writing and writing and that's usually how I end up talking longform, grabbing an idea, thought or whatever and just wanting to discuss it in as much detail as I can.

Note that this process doesn't mean that whatever I write about will get published. For example, there was a post I started to write when Xk started writing about a certain topic because I felt like I wanted to try and help, but eventually I stopped working on that text and now it's just rotting away. I'm not sure if I should be mentioning it now, but eh I think it's fine, hopefully.

Maple Post-o-Matic 9.1
I don't have a personal blog or anything, but it would probably behoove me to, given that my opinions/etc are pretty much completely at odds with my family?

One of my worldbuilding projects, the Safir Alliance, has a blog, but I daren't link it directly, because all that's present is a sad failed attempt at Worldbuilding June.

I keep thinking I should try to find some time to write in my bullet journal again, if just so I can vent about my mother-in-law's constant criticisms of my parenting.
