I'm also enjoying the slower pace, and also just… well… it's not like things where you're broadcasting to the world, tempting sealions in to have a go at you. To be honest, I've become quite afraid of posting on the Internet and it's made me weird and isolated.

Is there a guide anywhere to setting up your own Mastodon instance? I'm tempted to roll a (non-connected) one for the characters of an RP community I'm in.

the documentation is here but i'm not sure if they cover running with federation disabled

at any rate if you ask around in mastodon or the discord chat (i think there's one anyway, i'm not in it) you're bound to get someone to help you

It's not just the firehose of information and the "need to reply now now now", it's that it's largely gamifed by notifications. It's literally turning human interaction into a Skinner box, albeit one operated by your peers. Posting content is the activity; the feedback of likes, favorites, retweets, or boosts are the rewards. You're conditioned to keep posting, keep trying to find that viral message that will give you the next high.

(The punishment is all the nagging emails and notifications you get if you don't play along; "We miss you! You haven't posted a status in so long, tell us what's going on!". It's gross.)
