I'm thinking that I should make "banned" and "powerlevel -1" distinct things in some way


Right now:

Powerlevel -1:
- Banned users only
- Prevents all posting and whatnot
- Ignores "minpower 0" (can view anything normal users can)

Guest:
- Treated as power 0
- Can post with a login
- Can view all forums with power 0 or below


I'm thinking of making this into different options; where guests are treated as power -1 for viewing, and forums with a minpower of 0 are no longer visible to guests (or banned users) at all. This would mean the smallest amount of effort to stick it into the forum.

Primarily I would put this forum in the "not visible to guests" group, but other forums (like the trash can?) could go there, and maybe even at some point something like the old Officer's Club/Feels Station.

Of course, a better solution might be to try to implement user groups and permissions, but that's way out there...

I think having forums that guests or search engine bots can't see is something I desire. I'm not too concerned with members here seeing some of my more personal thoughts, but I'm not too found of google and others bullshit data gathering. :I

I can't really block search on a per-post level unless I disable access; but the deeper question I was thinking about is if I wanted this whole board to be searchable at all, at least for Google and whatever...

I don't think IT needs to be searchable, yeah. I feel like there's a sorta unspoken assumption that there's a tiny layer of privacy when posting in IT? I dunno. I actually think this forum being only accessible by logged in users feels kinda fitting, anyway...

That is mostly the mechanical way of doing it, but a more fundamental way would be that "guests cannot view forums with a minimum level of 0". (I explained it in too much detail and complicated it beyond what it needed to be; oops.)

The idea would be that we could have forums that were not visible to guests or crawlers, like this one.

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
