What I have in it depends on what's available, but I like a light roast of whatever sort, a bit of skim milk, and a shitton of Splenda. If sugar free flavors are available, those go in there too.

Starbutts was so unpopular in Adelaide that their one store didn't last very long at all. I think this also means that the mugs for Adelaide are pretty rare.

Oh, as for me and coffee, I like mine black. I have a feeling the Australian names for coffee aren't used everywhere so I'll explain. I know a "macchiato" is a very different thing in the United States, for instance…

I have what's called a "long black", which is hot water with the espresso shots added on top (to preserve the crema). This is the opposite of what's called an "Americano", where the espresso is added first, then hot water (destroying the crema). I also don't have any sugar.

Occasionally I like a macchiato, which in Australia is an itty bitty drink with espresso shots and a teaspoon of milk added. I think macchiato means "stained" so it's coffee stained with milk. I'm told if you order a macchiato in the US you get something with all kinds of milk and sugar…

Really occasionally, if I go somewhere with an excellent coffee and barista, I like a ristretto, which is a short shot of espresso. I've learned not to ask for it at places where coffee is just another thing they do (as opposed to their feature product) because they usually either don't know what I mean, or they fuck it up.

In summer I'm fond of cold brew.

I don't really know what kind of roast I like… I seem to like all kinds of things. I think what I really like is trying all the different coffees! I had a lovely single-origin coffee this week that was rather fruity, for example. I know I don't like them burnt though.

Though most days I drink the god-awful stuff we have at work. It serves it's purpose, and after enough cream and sugar it's drinkable.

i used to be a true coffee connoisseur, enjoying lattes, espresso, whatever.

it felt great to be part of "hip coffee culture". but for some reason, something felt empty inside after a cuppa coffee. actually, empty might not be the right word, i felt rly sick, restless + anxious each time i drank it.

eventually i went back to tea, which i barely drink now for the same reasons. i have been caffeine-free for a while.

that said, i still have to go to coffee shops sometimes. they're a huge part of Seattle culture after all, right? maybe i should get into decaf or smth.

That's actually super common… having restlessness and anxiety with coffee and caffeine in general.

I have to limit my caffeine intake. I have my one cup and that's it for me, otherwise I have problems with anxiety and it'll affect my sleep too. Past that, if someone invites me out for a coffee, I'll have a decaf, because I still like the warmth and the flavour and the company. Very rarely I'll have two coffees and I'll cackle like a madwoman and get shit done. But I can't do that very often at all or the anxiety problems rear their ugly head.

I have a close friend who has had to switch entirely to decaf as well for anxiety reasons.

As for "hip coffee culture" it's mostly a bunch of wank. I like a nice coffee but I'll admit most of my current enthusiasm is because I didn't have any coffee for the first 6 weeks of my little one's life and OH MAN THE JOY OF REDISCOVERY ALSO WOW MY TOLERANCE

I hate coffee unless it's basically 50% creamer, and even then it's too much. I haven't had any in years because of this; it's just too bitter. (I don't have tea very often for the same reason, and I don't like using too much sugar to make it drinkable.)

Caffeine, on the other hand, I don't mind in limited doses, especially since I find it so hard to really get going in the mornings. But I've been trying to excise that too, in favor of just better sleep.

I'm not fond of sugars and syrups in coffee, but I don't care if people have it that way. Although I do like some light teasing about how it's been ruined.

Yesterday I bought myself a small manual coffee grinder (Bialetti, to match my Bialetti coffee pot), so I can finally freshly-grind my coffee. It's a bit of effort, but the difference is oh my god worth it.

I've always just bought good coffee and had it ground in-store, but this does go stale pretty quickly. If you ask coffee snobs, it goes stale in minutes. But I never knew what to actually get to grind coffee if you only have one cup a day. It's not worth getting a big fancy grinder for that much, just like wasn't worth me buying a big coffee machine either.

Now I have the problem of storing my beans. It was available in 200g or 1kg sizes. I went through 200g in a little over a week so I got the kilo of beans…

Yeah, we’re definitely very snooty. It’s definitely rubbed off on me, too.

For years, the coffee place closest to my work was run by a man who was very passionate about coffee. He just loved coffee, trying all kinds of different methods of making it, going on holidays to explore different coffee stuff, and enthusiastically showing all his customers new things. You’d turn up one day and he’d get you to try a chemex coffee because he just bought the kit and he’s just SO EXCITED ABOUT IT HOW IS IT TRY IT. And then later it’s cold brew (oh fuCK I LOVE COLD BREW). Or this really awesome single origin. TRY IT TRY IT TRY IT. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

His passion and enthusiasm rubbed off on me over time, and constant exposure to his excellent coffee also kind of ruined me for half-arsed coffee. Suddenly most coffee chains coffee tasted burned or bitter or just meh. I’m picky about what beans I buy too, and I hand-grind them myself just before use. So I’m… definitely on my way to snootiness. But I don’t think I store my beans quite right, and I’m sure I fuck up all kinds of other stuff too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've had a Keurig machine in my place for a few years now and it's just made coffee so much easier and quicker for me. I love having it around.

While I know it's more expensive than just getting the ground stuff and doing the filters and making it yourself, I don't usually have the time or energy nowadays to really go about prepping the pot for the next day and then waiting for that to process.

I'd quit coffee but truth be told, I really do need it because of my "Oop Rick's gotta get up and go!" every single day of the year thing going on so yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh :X

I'm completely fine with most coffee to be honest even the cheap stuff, I have it weaker than most people too. Not saying I don't enjoy a strong one from time to time and on rare occasions without milk.

I can drink coffee once in awhile, but it's not my primary source for caffeine. I'm not too picky about brands when I do, but the best coffee I've ever had was Jittery Joe's, a local company in Georgia that used to have actual cafes in my hometown. They're still around, but I haven't found any of their coffee to buy in years. Which is a shame, as I loved their signature "Dancing Goats" blend... though I have seen it used in certain seasonal brews of Terrapin Beer.
