What would you do if you suddenly won $1,000,000 USD? Assume you won't get taxed either (or it's after taxes).

I've talked about this with some friends and the answers can vary wildly. It's especially enlightening to cost of living as the answers can vary wildly depending on where you live!

I think for me I would probably buy a nice-ish apartment in Manhattan that doesn't cost more than 80% of the money. So probably a small one bed room But it would be nice to not have to pay rent. Although I'd have to be wary of all the potential fees (and estate taxes oh gods~) I would use the remaining money as a safety net, probably...

Well, after paying off my debts and my car (not a huge chunk, but still, that's priority) I'd probably buy a house (taking up ~half of it? at least in the area I'd want) just so I don't have to worry about rent, OR a place to live!

Honestly the rest though, barring maybe a vacation or two, I'd probably save/invest it, because who knows when it'd come in handy, right?

does anybody else know?

if not, i'd prolly keep living where i do, keep my job (though maybe work fewer hours), really the only thing i'd change would be my budget - instead of limiting my spending to a couple hundred a month, maybe i'll try to limit it to how much i make from work, with bills and living expenses payed by my million instead? that way i don't get completely lazy and gives me reason to keep working. my old console collecting would probably become more of an expenditure, and i may buy another guitar or two at that point... also, with that sort of money, i can afford buying LEGO sets again, hehe

i'd probably also try and rent a storage space so i can offload my stuff that's still in my mom's house to somewhere up here, free up a couple rooms for her.

might look into getting a car at that point, as well

House, board games, visit friends, help people I know.

First would be a nice, decent house with space for board gaming and perhaps a few RL friends, if they wish to move in or spend a night there. And expand my meager game collection to a decent size. Maybe eventually getting classic consoles and games too. That would take a major chunk of the money.

I've always felt stuck living in Finland, knowing that most of my friends online are abroad. I wouldn't mind spending a few good months, hell, why not half a year, roaming around and seeing people I've only talked to online. And since I know how shitty things have been for some of my friends, it wouldn't be out of the question to help them either via goods and services or plain funds.

There's also the board game cafeteria that a bunch of my friends are working with right now, so becoming a partner in that wouldn't hurt either.

Omg, this. I love LEGO but they are so ridiculously expensive that I just can't justify spending money on them.

Quit my job and sell my car (wow, short-term I'm ahead in funds! ); possibly spend some of the money to break my lease and move somewhere closer to her work, but I dunno if she'd actually be interested in that.

A million dollars is a lot of money, but it's not so much that I could live off it forever either (unfortunately). I'd invest as much as I could into something reliable, enough to beat inflation ideally; at that point I'd give myself 5 years to see if I could create a self-sustaining income without needing to be employed by someone else. If not, then I'd go back into the workforce (which would be a pain with a 5-year resume gap, oh well); that's what I'd really like to do but I'm not financially secure enough to try.

In order of operations:

  • Dump half of it into long-term investments

  • Purchase a reasonable new car to replace my dying one (Prius V, probably)

  • Pay off everyone in the apartment's loans

  • Selectively take care of other people's monetary problems

  • Buy fun personal shit (new computer, maybe some assorted other fun stuff)

I am a boring person

1M USD makes... 22 653 600 CZK.

That's sure would net a nice living in CZ. My generic answer is see how I can invest it to secure my future for a while, possibly buy real estate. Then just have a huge safety net, selectively help people, get plane tickets to visit friends often, be generous on Patreon and stuff, and not be afraid to get a little comfier in general. I'd still continue studying and/or working if I could manage it so not a big change in my actual life... especially since I don't know what my long term goal is right now...

I am a boring person

Boring yet sensible and generous.

If I'd been asked this question a few years ago, I'd probably explain something lavish like buying a big house, getting my dream car, and going on a long vacation. Now... pay off my debts, buy an affordable house, maybe splurge $10,000 or so on items and a short vacation, then invest the remaining balance.

I'd probably put half of it in something low risk like an index stock, move to Oregon (sick of the bible belt, I'll take hipsters over baptists any day), and stay a hermit.

Oh, and I'd put $25,000 away to clone my cat in about 10 or so years after he passes away. Yeah, I'm weird.

Give some to people who need it and then use the rest to pay off student loans and get a new gaming PC + PS4 + TV, whatever's left I dunno, maybe a candy cab or pinball machine

Bank at least a third of it right off the bat, and probably see about putting another third into investments.

The other third would purely be for me. I'd polish off my NES game collection, then plan a nice trip to Japan (probably both at the same time). Those are a couple of things on my bucket list I've wanted to do for a good while now. I'd probably also quit my job and start doing things to prepare myself for a better one, since I can be finally financially secure enough to do so.

Also, buy pointless shit. Lots and lots of pointless shit.

Pay off my loans, go back to school and be able to focus solely on that because I would have the money to be unemployed for years and still rent a kickass apartment wherever it'd be I would end up.

Because I mean cool, money and shit, but I'd have a career.

First thing would be an entire computer setup for streaming and VR including games and consoles. Then would be subscribing to a bunch of those monthly box things. Anything left would be kept for repairs and future games.

Stick half in to a bank account with a high rate of interest and don't touch it
Pay off my parent's debts
Buy all the professional software licences I need
Likely donate a ton more during AGDQ and SGDQ

Basically, get myself set up for the future, then just go nuts with the remainder.

I'd pay off my student loans for a start, then buy a house. That's going to be hard, though, because it seems all houses being built these days are huge towering monstrosities with three car garages and no more than four windows. Bleh. I want a house that's more house than garage, thank you.

I might buy a Delorean, just because I've always wanted one, and maybe a Tesla 3. That's about it. The rest (And granted, there's probably not much at this point) would be invested in an IRA or similar. In fact, I probably wouldn't buy the Delorean.

First, I'd pay off the mortgage, and get a few things done around the house to make life easier. Some things like storage would help a lot, and I'd also like to do some energy/green projects. By sticking with our current house but problem-solving some stuff, I'd have the bulk of the money for other goals.

Second, I'd solve our car problems. Our current car is mechanically sound, but it's a 3 door hatchback, and impractical for our new family. Ideally we need two cars, so I can get around while my husband is at work. I'd splurge and get two new cars (maybe EVs), one for each of us. I'd like mine to be blue.

With debts killed and some problems solved, I'd then invest the bulk of it into superannuation and funds for things like schooling. Perhaps managed funds to try to earn some income I can live off at least partially. Enough that I can choose the kind of work I do (perhaps arty shit). I'd want to be provided for in my old age, or if any of us get sick, and I want my son to be taken care of as well.

Theoretically, then I'd have most of my needs met, or planned for, freeing me up for both fun things and charity stuff. I'd like to donate to the surf life saving club, for instance. I'd also like to travel. I'd also hire somebody to help me around the house and yard so I can spend my time better.
