I'm curious, what types of input device/hardware, or schemes/setups do you like?

This is inspired by a few things, one note-able one is tablet commercials bragging about not having that "bulky,awkward" keyboard, or the ability to move it "out of the way"

From my perspective, both as a programmer, and a gamer, I LOVE that keyboard, and it's not in my way. Oh, quite contrary to what those tablet PC ads say, I want MORE keys!

Every keyboard until I dealt with laptops, including the one on the computer I'm using right now has/had a keyboard with the usual QWERTY layout, F1-F12 , numpad, print screen,lock, and some auxiliary feature (this one has 8 shortcut keys at the top, but those actually never get used, i think they're actually disabled, anyways) My laptop has the fun system of pressing extra keys just to do things like press printscreen, and truth be told: I haven't gotten used to this, and generally hate it. I also had experiences where because some keys are missing/re-configured (like numpad) I cannot use some options in certain games/programs.

I prefer mice over touch pads and touch screens. I have a wireless USB mouse for my laptop, and I press the button above the touch pad every time I use that computer, because I cannot stress how much I HATE those things. I've contemplated a USB keyboard, also...but a game controller, external hub, or video capture card takes priority over that.

game controllers are great for games, I may also look into the emulation of the analogue stick for my games as it turns-out, the 'standard' approach to WASD/arrows/d-pad is kinda wrong, or at least quite static. It also would work wonders if I made a mobile game that doesn't consist SOLELY of "swipe this, touch that!" (and I probably would, the current trends disgust me that people can make millions on re-skinning literally the same basic game formula 20 times...)

Gimmicky things like the wiimote I have mixed feelings about. My only experiences with it have been Wii Sports, and that was abysmal. I'd rather go to the local golf course than suffer through Wii Sports completely screwing me over any day. The Wiimote seems like an interesting input device, but I haven't had a good experience with it any time it's 'true potential' was unleashed.

Those are just my tidbits.
How's everyone else think?

the 360 controller (and now the One controller) have been my goto for computer gaming in most cases, though there's a lot of games i still use my keyboard and mouse for. That being said, holy cow for some reason the Wii U Pro controller just feels good to hold! just feels a little awkward to stretch my thumb over to hit the face buttons, and i also can't claw with it like i do when i play Halo.

that being said, the only other controllers i have much experience with is the wiimote and the old 3-button Genesis pad (though just the other day i recieved the pair of official wireless 6-button pads i ordered, so i should have some feedback on those soon!). The wiimote really shines in Skyward Sword imo, though that is of course with the MotionPlus attachment. I'm also hoping to get a few more systems in soon, so i should be able to offer up more about SEGA's other controller fare.

When it comes to something I plug into a PC, I have a controller adapter I got off Amazon for like, $4 that allows me to hook two PS2 controllers into it. It's perfect for my gaming! Since I'm kind of used to SNES-like controllers anyway, this is OK. Though nothing beats an NES controller in my hands...

Touchpads vs. Mice though? Mice win every time. I've never met a touchpad I liked, or wanted to do its own fucking thing less than 75% of the time. No, touchpad, I didn't want to zoom, move to a new window, and click on that thing. I wanted to scroll down. Stop being an asshole.

yeah, I've only ever used controllers with an actual console. (or when they're integrated, like those plug-n-play's that break...)

I don't think my brother in law has Skyward Sword, not sure why... I'd have to ask him or my sister some time. They might and I just never noticed, or it was hidden from me.

alright.
I've contemplated getting an actual controller for some of the emulated games (or more advanced PC games, if they support it). Any controller as advanced as the n64 and higher REALLY doesn't map well to a keyboard, and some computer games have too many hotkeys. Luckily, not all n64 games actually use the whole controller, and I don't play too many computer games that make me regret the keyboard control layout!

Yeah, I don't think there's a single touchpad in existence that actually works better than a mouse.
They're always acting up, and you have to pose your hands in a special way to not trip them up while you're typing something, or just resting your hands on the keyboard. Then whenever you actually need to use them, they do ENTIRELY the opposite of what you need/want. A ball mouse that hasn't been cleaned in a while is actually more reliable...

I will say that the only touchpads I've had any positive experience with are MacBook touchpads--something about the combination of the hardware and software surrounding them that makes them actually great to use in a desktop environment, along with their physical placement on the system.

As far as controllers go, the DS4 is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic. Wonderful D-pad, reasonable face buttons, classic analog sticks, all in spite of slightly pain in the ass triggers as they're easy to press down when setting down the controller. Increasing DS4 support on PC is great as well (and Rocket League supports it right out of the box!)

For most games, the keyboard/mouse combination is far superior, especially when dealing with first-person shooters. You get a degree of accuracy that you just don't get with controllers. However, that's not suitable for every game.

Games like Watch_Dogs 2, and certain parts of GTAV - namely controlling helicopters - I'll switch to the Xbox 360 controller. Also useful when I'm emulating consoles like PS2 or Gamecube. However, in games that rely on the D-Pad, like Axiom Verge, or emulating older consoles, like a NES or SNES, or handhelds, the 360 controller just falls flat because the D-Pad is outright garbage. At that point, I'll switch to a PS2 controller with a USB adapter.

For Wii emulation, I went and bought the Mayflash Dolphin Bar, which works very well. I've found that, while Metroid Prime Trilogy can be quite nicely played with a mouse and keyboard, other games, like Trauma Centre, really play much better with the actual controllers.

KB/M if the game works well with it, otherwise I'll stick to a DS4 controller.

With that said, I'm one of those peeps that play many kinds of platformers, such as Meat Boy and Dustforce with a keyboard. Most act like that is impossible and not comfortable or something. But I generally like it, and ever sometimes prefer it.

Also, controller is also nice for being able to just sit down in the sofa, never underestimate the value that being a couch potato brings.


As for things that aren't gaming, fullscale keyboard with flat keys is the one thing I enjoy. Laptop-size is no go, and bulky keys are no-go as well.

Logitech Ultra-X Premium is still my favorite keyboard of all time, even if it is no longer in production.

I use an Xbox One controller whenever possible, DS4 when it's not.
They're both damn near flawless controllers, but the DS4 give me wrist issues with certain games (looking at you, Binding of Isaac. ) so the Xbone pad beats it out.

I used to be 100% KB+M, but again, wrist issues, but that's a problem of my desk being too high, and my chair not being high enough.
