Facebook can be slightly less white noise if you unfollow family. I did that with most of mine and just use it like a sort of shittier Twitter that only a handful of friends use. Though even with that I still don't enjoy using it.

To me, social media seem to be tailored to... reinforce some society standards. Show certain people as megapopular, and make the average joe think they can easily be that person. It's all a toxic race to popularity, where your amount of friends/followers define what you are ('popular', 'normal', 'noone cares about you').

Anyway, I occasionally use Twitter to read cool things or post shit, that's all. I have mostly stopped using Facebook because it has turned to shit. Any meaningful post is drowned under loads of clickbait posts and thinly-disguised ads. Well, not all, but I once tried to post something and it was pushed down into oblivion as the algorithm decided it wasn't cool enough. Oh and that. You feel like a guinea pig, constantly at the mercy of algorithms. All sorts of data on you are being collected for the sake of targeted advertising. Hell, I read about the Facebook app recording your conversations and sneaking into your texts to feed the Facebook advertising machine. This is capitalism pushed to the extreme: your value is defined by your capital and how willing you are to sink it into what's suggested to you. The human doesn't matter, it's all money. It doesn't matter how they found out that you like wearing lingerie when you told noone, you're not supposed to think, you're supposed to jump on the occasion to consume more.

Twitter is about the only social network I use, as it's good to see what friends are up to right now. It's not really good for anything indepth like politics though. I do use Reddit but I wouldn't call it a social network, more of a super huge forum with it's own subcommunities, some are awesome, some are downright awful... unsurprisingly the best communities on Reddit runs a lot more like a traditional forum than depending on the silly upvote system.

Seems about right from my own experience. I can also add that having a almighty supreme leader doing the decisions leads to less drama than trying to be overly democratic about it (adding on that whole small communities are a monarchy not a democracy thing).

I believe Drag summed it all up perfectly. It's a nice tool to keep in contact with people and organize events and such, but I just don't get that much out of it anymore. Twitter is a sort of fun, global forum that I still enjoy, but is limited by it's brevity. Reddit is nice, but it lacks the sort of personal creativity and identity a place like this can provide.

As far as Acmlmboards in general, I suppose there's something to be said for the type of posting that Syndromes encourage and the appeal that it has. I happen to enjoy the odd sort of manic fun that can come from this sort of place where creativity and programming knowledge meet, knowing that general post quality can improve over time.

That said, I totally understand the desire to keep this place as it is and it's own appeal. It may not scratch everyone's proverbial "itch", but there's still a lot here.

When I mentioned wanting to focus on higher quality posts, that was long ago. These days it is a lot more relaxed, to the point someone could get it if they wanted, and as long as it wasn't just outright total garbage posting it'd probably be fine. (I think a good baseline is "did you have to think about what you were posting before you posted it") ...

There just isn't really enough activity, since you need to build off of other activity to get it that way.
