Windows 2000 wasn't inherently terrible. It's main sin was wearing the name of a direct upgrade from Windows 98, despite not being so, and a number of things that weren't entirely compatible with the NT line didn't work properly on it. The parts that did work were pretty solid, however. I also believe that it didn't have the 9.7 days issue that 98 did, where floating point precision in the uptime variable being higher than 0.1 seconds would start to cause considerable flakiness.

Windows ME was the much worse operating system at the time, and was probably part of the reason why the NT line became the main Windows line starting with XP. Back in 2004, the person in charge of a course I was on would frequently refer to it as "More Errors", and given my experiences with it on my parents' computer, I'd say that it is one of the few versions of Windows that has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

No problem with writing essays, it's been an interesting read.

I also mostly agree with this. There are a few domains that do require powerful hardware though:

* realistic games -- need a beefy GPU
* video encoding/decoding/playback, with HD video and now 4K. I believe anything above 4K is useless though, your eyes wouldn't see a difference.
* highly specific domains: predicting weather, cracking hashes, etc. They have specific supercomputer clusters anyway.

Aside from that, one could very well stay 10 years or so in the past without problems. Except of course for the web which is 'progressing' constantly and fastly.

Also, I can say from a programming perspective that "modern" web design sucks...
It's actually not nearly as standardized as claimed to be.

I don't quite agree there. As far as I've observed, HTML/JS/CSS are pretty standardized across browsers unless you're using very new features.

Is it bad that I actually quite liked Windows ME as a kid? Maybe I was too young to understand its horribleness? Dunno, don't remember having issues with it.

I've been learning more and more HTML/CSS/JS and I can agree, most of the new HTML5 is standarized too, and modern web is actually quite well documented. Now if it wasn't for the awful technology some websites try to use. I've seen Bootstrap code, it looks like a gigantic mess for me (and that's only Bootstrap!), although that might just be me. Some specific things are kinda wonky, like fixed backgrounds and new features still in development.

HTML5 actually makes quite a good job at separating the old built-in styling properties some elements had and the CSS itself. They might have gone a bit too far with the redefinition of bold, italic and underlined elements though.

Alright, hyper-realistic, yes... but, only for LIVE rendering. Obviously, you can't do EVERYTHING on the older hardware, that's a given. But even today, pre-rendering (and internal caching) is used to reduce the load from rendering a graphic or set of graphics every frame to simply displaying them. This has limits, and does sacrifice filesize. But, compression and well-optimized file formats can mitigate this. My other complaint with the GPU is it's inherently difficult to program, and all these wonderful things involving vectors and bitmaps have to be ENTIRELY re-designed. This forces devs to code their own stuff, or import amount of libraries, putting them in major dependency hell, and easily bloating the filesize of their programs just to include a few basic procedures. The core application can be a few megabytes, and throw in your libraries, it can skyrocket in size to several, or reach gigabyte sizes. That's less room for assets, and also increased load times. It can add hundreds to thousands of new places to encounter a serious bug, too. The GPU is nice, but it's a pain to use, and it still doesn't get used RIGHT half the time. (same with RAM and CPU, and as earlier stated: computers only FIVE years old rendered 'obsolete') The GPU and all modern-era hardware have to be treated diffently, and too few people know or have access to the tools to do it properly. (Or, they are forced to meet unrealistic deadlines and/or be told how to do it by so-called "executives" and "government policies" , the majority of which lead to creating HIGHLY unstable or controversial programs, which neither the programmers or end-users agree with or endorce, but "rules are rules" , right?)

Which brings me to my next point adding on to what was said about 4k. Indeed, it doesn't NEED to go there, but it WILL... I don't like DPI, either... Mobile devices are notorious for being an absolute pain in the ass with graphics display. Modern TV's are NOT recommended for older games because they lack a wonderful thing called "scaling" (and because their DPI combined with resolution make it nigh impossible to see what's going on in your game) I don't think these hyper-HD models are needed, either. I would actually rather use low-poly models that weren't finished, because story was lacking and needed to be finished, then spend my remaining time making several million+ poly 100MB-1GB per file models with 2048 uncompressed RGBA32 texture atlases and advanced shaders. Graphics are important, but should not be the main selling point of a game. I couldn't give two shits about the chameleon in the background or shiny reflective water (that are eating so many resources hundreds of trees had to be deleted). I care about gameplay and story. Graphics are nice, but make a game, not a freaking interactive movie. I don't care about COD and most of the other FPS and so-called "AAA" games because they are overrated in my opinion. I wouldn't even pirate them, assuming I had a machine that could run them. I obviously wouldn't buy them, and I'd rather not make one. People are too obsessed with "HD graphics" Let's pretend you had a super-computer with infinte power and disk space. You could make ANY game up to what its hardware and/or OS are capable of. Even then, you shouldn't use the same bland routine of "what worked before" The revolutionary and now well-respected games, programs, and systems of the old days didn't get where they are by being the same as the last 10,20,100+ iterations. They did something NEW, and not new as in "push boundaries of known tech carelessly to which point it was obsolete" When they DID challenge what was already there, or even in development, they used what they had better. Games made by the OLD Rare and Nintendo show this quite well. Even EA and MS once could be taken seriously. Now they're a laughing stock and are hated for RUINING everything they touch or create. Pixel art, low-poly, vector, voxel, etc... ALL have a place. HD surrealistic whatever is not the ONLY graphics style, FPS is not the only genre, pay to win is not the ONLY way to make an MMO financially stable, RTS doesn't mean "REAL (literally) time strategy" , etc... One reason I now want to be a game dev is to try and bring-back some of what made the gaming industry great. Show people a REAL game, something that came from the heart and soul, not another sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel of a genre that's been done a million times over with "better" graphics or "tons of unlockable content" that has "revolutionary cloud backups of all your saves" is currently in "early access" and is built on "THE BEST ENGINE IN THE WORLD EVER FOREVER". WTF...

Now, HTML5... A LOT has to be done. Given my great disinterest in toughing the GPU, I won't touch webGL, so I can't say anything of webGL's features. However, the bulk of GPU-based libraries/sites, and devs who encourage you to use the "wonders of the GPU" do not HAVE or PROVIDE the means to do things that software renderers have been doing for years. "want a curve? it's easy, DO IT YOURSELF!" ok... Class LineTool extends SomeGPUAPI {/*TONS of math goes here*/} ... or import gfxLib.* Now, canvascontext2d... I am using this, and I even found a 3d renderer based on it (cool!) It does support all the basic vector-drawing stuff the default "hardware accelerated stuffz" REFUSES to implement, however still has multiple caveats and DOES require rendering engines built overtop to be incredibly useful. Depending on the browser, it has "security" features that make it difficult/impossible to test stuff on local machine, or distribute a stand-alone downloadable version of your application. (in fact, all of HTML5 does, especially when dealing with the "oh so incredibly progressive" browser that is Google Chrome) Now, there are actually multiple support inconsistencies, most noteably with CSS3 -webkit -moz -o -ms , whatever... STANDARDS mean there should only be one or a select few methods to do something. These should be generally decided by a central organization. (in this case, we have the so-called "W3C") These vendor-specfic tags/prefixes/functions are all decided by browser vendors, but nonethless, W3C doesn't seem to care that this is a hassle for devs, as they endorse this by providing nearly all the documentation on how to do it. result: what should take one line of code takes 4+ to (hopefully) target every browser. I won't accept the "HTML5 standard" as a "standard" until all these experimental features are universally supported, 100% documented, and not locked behind vendor prefixes. "HTML5" games should be called "HTML5 Canvas JavaSript" games, because all of the code in most cases is Javascript. They should not be called "modern" or "new" until JS becomes better structured and better optimized. All that really changed is some new security, syntax that supposedly can mitigate the use of hacky code, a few changes/additions to the existing APIS (like XHR2, which if named properly should be "GeneralURLRequest" , since it's designed for stuff like .txt .json and .bin , not exclusively XML) , the addition of some new APIS (HTML5 Canvas, HTML5 Video, CanvasContext2D, WebGL, etc...) , very small stuff. It's behind the EMACScript defs, even, which include more OOP stuff. JS uses hacks and VERY ugly code to emulate "proper" OOP If you Compare Flash AS3, Java, and C# (cuz, unity) there's a true OOP thing going, most especially JAVA. Modern games and programs use heavily OOP, and now are adding these Entity Component System things, which I gotta admit sound useful, but are presently beyond my grasp of understanding. Now, ignoring language features, Flash had an EXCELLENT system for animations. I think that flash should remain (or a system similar to it) to deal with animations. NO HTML5 library/engine I've seen to DATE can compare. JS is waaay older than flash...so I don't justify calling HTML5 really modern. I do welcome dropping XHTML, though. I could go on and on about how many reasons I do not like it, and even consider it's die-hard supporters hypocritical when saying how much "better" it is than the plugin-based systems that are FAR more developed. However, that would entirely de-rail the thread, if this hasn't been done already.

Due to in part the way I was raised, and in part what I have learned growing up, especially in recent years, I see that EVERYTHING must have a balance. If you walk/look exclusively down one path, you inevitably make no real progress, you actually go backwards. You shouldn't be a afraid to do something new, but you shouldn't forget what you or someone else have done before. In the right cases, you should bring an idea back from the past, or you can try doing it. The problem with the tech industry is that they either try too many new things, or or taking something old and by all means obsolete or not yet mature, and re-branding this as something 'new'. They also like to re-use the SAME concept and not change it much, if at all. (note-ably with games) They also don't balance-out relevant issues. (security/privacy vs convenience/economics) As a result, they're going backwards. "superior" GPUs can't do the same stuff that was originally given to CPUs to do and the excuse for this is "do it yourself". Security is SO much more "important" that the END-USER is losing their RIGHT to have 100% control over WHAT is on their machine, WHEN it runs, and HOW it runs. I like flash games/animations, and I have yet to get viruses from one, few caused me lag (those that do typically use HD assets or poor resource management). Now, all the games/animations/sites that I love are in jeopardy over a global flash blacklist in any web browser or mobile device and a large corporate-sponsored effort to snuff flash out. I should be allowed to opt-out of this B.S. I accept the potential risks of a virus. I'm sorry, but Google, Mozilla, Apple, Microsoft, IT'S MY COMPUTER, STFU AND LET ME INSTALL THE PROGRAMS I WANT! Oh, and quit saying "HTML5 is more open than flash", because nearly every prominent/existing (and well-promoted) engine/tool for it is proprietary.
The closest to replacing Flash is CreateJS. But having similar super-complex API and no engine/IDE for it? Its just not NEARLY ready to replace flash.

Now, textwalls...
On the site I was on before, people BOAST about how a post is "tl;dr" for them...
I also deal with this on youtube. a lot. And what REALLY grinds my gears... I shorten it (and I've also witnessed other comment chains with similar transactions) , people will complain "not enough detail" thus, a viscous cycle of a wasted attempt making an "optimal" post/thread starts. Ofc, there's plenty of worse comments to be made about the people writing long posts as mine. I have dealt with those, too. Like this general assumption everyone writing such a long text wall is autistic... >.> (Which is ironic, because some people matching said description would be totally incapable of knowing HOW to write something so expansive and detailed, as some have SERIOUS problems listening to the teachers saying to EXPLAIN what you're trying to convey. Some also are so unaware of the world around them they lack anything to contribute the content of such lengthy and meticulously crafted posts)

I think that's everything.
Hopefully my next replies if any will be shorter.
People saying textwalls take TOO long to READ should try writing one. takes AGES. This one took me a couple hours... It should take 10-30 minutes to read, roughly, and the most time may be spent either replying or thinking-over it, or researching ways to re-enforce/challenge these statements...XD (why do we humans like using exponentially more time/effort creating something than it takes for it to be appreciated/consumed?)

Sounds like the site you were on before was full of douchebags...

Anyway.

I won't accept the "HTML5 standard" as a "standard" until all these experimental features are universally supported, 100% documented, and not locked behind vendor prefixes.

They eventually become standard, but then, other features are added by some browsers and are first experimental and non-standard. And the cycle repeats.

There's a larger issue with this though. Browser making has become sort of an industry.

As explained in detail here, the car market is stale, with car vendors only doing incremental changes to stay 'better' than the competitors, and no major breakthrough because noone has the ressources to immediately reach their level and compete with them.

The browser market is in a similar situation. With how complex browsers have become, how fast the HTML standards are evolving (browsers constantly adding new features that then become standard) and how fast mainstream websites evolve too (using new features either for actual improvements or for the sake of staying hip), there's no way an amateur coder can make a decent browser. You basically have to be a huge workforce to quickly put together a browser that can compete with the major ones.

Or you can stick to existing browser engines, like Webkit or Gecko. But then, what are you achieving? You're basically making a new frontend, not a new browser.

With Opera dumping Presto for Webkit, Firefox becoming more and more of a Chrome clone with each release, we're likely heading towards a Webkit monopoly. Browser engines are huge, requiring constant effort to maintain and develop. It would make sense for a browser company to just switch to Webkit -- they could concentrate their workforce on developing the browser frontend, and web developers would have one less browser engine to care about. If full HTML5 standardization happens, it will be through monopoly.

With all the recent web trends, the modern web could very well be named the capitalist web. Major browsers are produced by companies, and anything else is branches of those, that constantly have to play catch-up to not fall into oblivion. The mainstream websites (social networks) are developed and run by big companies. And I'm not getting into tracking and advertisement.

Modern trends are connecting everything to servers (run by big companies, again), and forced progress. Which serves to ensure the users keep consuming. If you keep using some old program that does what you want and runs fine, what incentive do you have to update or buy new hardware? None, until something breaks. But if the program updates itself automatically and forcefully, and old versions are removed from distribution? You will be forced to follow the progress, and maybe buy new hardware. The business doesn't care if your old setup worked fine for you -- they want you to consume.

Sadly...
And the ultimate implications of that will be the whole thing collapses on itself, or ignore other issues that later become major and also in some way cause severe problems that will also bring it down.

That is not sustainable at any level, and will eventually cause some VERY bad things to happen.
Not to get too much into economic systems, but this is the ultimate problem with Capitalism. I wonder how much further the wage gap will increase during said process, too?

Anyways, whatever the case, if they think that there will be no massive and negative repercussions of corporatizing everything they see, they're gravely mistaken. There's a reason monopolies are/were illegal in the USA. No good has EVER come of one existing.

Forcing progress is also most liekly the reason some of the tech industry is actually dying. They want people to buy, but people cannot buy a new $1000 computer every year/month/week. So, they're actually losing business, because people go for what's cheaper or doesn't need to be replaced as often.

Also, let me give you a really interesting prediction.
Someday, there will be no such thing as "computer" , "phone" , "game console" , "television set" , etc... Most of these devices already are more than capable of emulating the other either by default, or with the addition of new hardware or software. Thus, some day we'll just have some type of "data pad" or "tablet" as the ONLY mainstream digital device.

regardless of what happens, all those so-called "executives" better watch their step. The best way to cripple or destroy these monopolies or put them back in shape is to render it impossible for them to make money. employee strikes, boycotts, massive hacks, etc... I'd actually personally love to see all these CEOs and Board of Directors and Supervisors try to maintain one of these huge programs without the programmers and artists they depend on being able to abuse and exploit. XD It'd be amusing watching them scramble to try and find someone able to replace those employees, failing, and ether have to shut-down, or make THE most pitiful attempt to maintain the codebases, themselves.

I guess we'll just see. But they cannot absolutely FORCE customers to buy without making laws (or breaking them by illegally entering homes and stealing old stuff and putting something new there), and they do that, hope they are ready for riots and wars. It WILL happen if they go to such extremes. But even now, enough of those people fed-up start protests or generally raise a stink, the corporations will be put back in their place pretty damn fast.

As for the douche thing... Yeah, they can be. Some more than others, and these people generally are respected by all, including the staff. I'd say where it was or who I am, but I'm so paranoid someone else from there would then try causing problems for me. I already know at least one person from said site, but luckily there's no quarrel among us... I will say it's another relatively famous site related to video games. Some of them, though, are actually quite appalled by the others or just don't like involving themselves with the drama. But, care to guess the things that happen if you DARE challenge the 'general consensus' ?

not to be rude or anything, but probably should try to keep this thread on-topic, also... continuing this argument too much further might result in me becoming quite unreasonable, because more or less, my mind is made-up on this subject, and there's not really anything that will make me change it willingly.

I was raised/taught to always try to do the best I possibly can. What I see going on in nearly every industry today disappoints and upsets me. That said, I don't welcome any of these new changes if they come at the cost of quality, and even, the history of it all.

Also, there's an old saying that haste makes waste. Forcing progress doesn't advance anything, it stalls it or sets it backward. Which is precisely what's happening at an alarming and ever-increasing rate today.

My parents are in a weird spot. On one hand, they aren't complete idiots an they know about tech...

... but on the other hand, not that much...?

dad: "do not go in System32!! you will ruin shit"

more recently, mom, regarding Windows 10: "you have to follow progress even if it's shit". haha, no.

and I'm not getting into how much they buy into the latest purely capitalist trends, like useless smart objects, or dad's collection of tablets that mostly collect dust.

lol...

Merely opening system32 shouldn't break the computer
Copying files from there doesn't generally break shit.
And modification depends on a variety of factors. I personally won't try it, but that doesn't mean I believe you automatically will ruin the computer by doing it.

My parents and I are quite satisfied with our "outdated" computers, although this one is due to be replaced (and possibly given to me...which, IDK...I have a LOT of shit to repair if it's to be useful for "just me") as soon as we get the files copied off of it. My mom has experienced Windows 10 at work and says it's not so bad, so IDK... I have had a few experiences with Windows 8, and wasnt all impressed. In general, I've heard more not good things about it, like continuing 8's trend of ruining EVERYTHING that made Windows so special. (as if Vista wasn't enough by adding unwanted "security"...)

Speaking of useless "smart objects", am I the only one who can't take the Kohler Intelligent Toilet commercials seriously? (let alone the product, only thing toilets need an improvement on is THEY'RE NOT UP TO THE JOB WHEN IT COMES TO FLUSHING... not adding bunch of damn computer chips) Oh, and I've watched some of those youtube videos showing "revolutionary inventions you've never heard of" I find most of them quite laughable. I cannot believe I EVER thought this was a good way to take technology. Most of these "smart devices" are a joke. What are everyone's thought on the Ring doorbell, though? I feel like unlike everything else, it's purpose/existence can at least be justified, if that's ALL it's doing. Still, I am extremely wary of ANYTHING going into the domain of "smart home". Besides, I don't trust the gov't to not illegally be using them to spy. They seem to enjoy breaking the fourth amendment lately. From what I understand, the smart devices and cloud computing apps are an excellent way to do it.

Of course. Smart devices don't serve to improve humanity. It's not what humanity needs. It's a purely and entirely capitalist trend.

1) convince people to buy your 'revolutionary' smart gadget, it makes money
2) make said gadget obsolete after one year or less, so they'll have to buy the new version, making even more money
3) collect data on the user, sell those data to advertisers, it makes money too, and feeds the giant network of 'personalized' (read: powered by privacy invasion) advertising

rgelrlf. don't get me started on Windows 10. Parents have installed that shit on all their fucking computers. If you want to read fun things about Windows 10, it's probably better to go there than keep derailing this thread

I've heard horror stories about 10 from my friend and his dad. I've had experiences with 8, don't like it, either.

What annoys me is that even those who see these devices are just pointless, and no longer advancing in ANY way SUPPORT capitalism. OBVIOUSLY, the system at its most extremes clearly is a means to an end. But, whatever, there's NO way that this could have negative economic, social, or environmental consequences! That's all a myth, we're beyond the days that great nations can fall due to immense internal or external pressure. Oh, and we're taking GREAT care of our planet, species aren't dying left and right because we've raped mother earth hard in assorted ways.
morons...

Oh, and have you seen the ad reels for these "advanced devices" on the floor models? Seems there's this whole trend of "everyone is the same" going on? Hmm, sounds a lot like 1984. Wait, I thought COMMUNISM caused that only? Nope, Capitalism is equally capable of it. Lay it out in a diagram, it's...YOU GUESSED IT, a Pyramid!

I agree on not derailing the thread any fruther, which is also why I said probably should quit getting into this debate. I could go on, and on, and ON about it, myself. In my defense, though, I didn't initially de-rail the thread, I simply added on to the previous statements about how SUPERIOR obsolete technology is to this modern mass-produced, mass-marketed CRAP. I may have gotten carried away, but this is why I avoid debates/discussions a lot. They get me going and I can't stop. Also, i did mention some more relevant material to the original topic, but I don't think anyone noticed it or had anything to say. Thus, the only discussion gradually became "GOD I HATE THE TECH INDUSTRY OF THESE DAYS!". It was already on its way there when I joined-in, honestly...

I hate the fake error dialog generator everyone uses because the font is subtly off in a few ways and it makes me so, so angry.

"the highs and lows of the atomsmasher error generator"

yeah

and if you think the error generator is off, there is much worse when people try to recreate Windows 1.0x / 3.0x style errors in PowerPoint

I've always felt that the correct way to generate errors is to... generate them yourself.

The administration (as well as a few users) have decided that you're creepy/weird enough that it's time to activate the sploded clause.

I've used the atomsmasher generator before.
I have different reasons for not liking it, namely, limitations.
This inspired me to try cloning the windows dialogue prompts using HTML + CSS3.
I haven't touched said project in AGES, though

As for "the best way is to cause an actual error"
yeah...
But error generators are created for fun so you can create some error that usually would be impossible to legitimately cause/obtain.

No simulator of such a thing could be 100% accurate without referring to the source code of the legitimate program, and having all required assets at hand. I can sorta deal with that first bit, but the windows .msstyles files don't seem to be storing everything in quite the same way it gets displayed

What annoys me more is that some of these clones/parodies/generators do not always accurately duplicate the styles of the windows, even. Almost all of them are actually fairly trivial to add. I do realize they're trying their best, but it still bothers me. (Aero's glass gradient, took me very short amount of time to copy the basic concept behind how it would work, most things imitating/mocking Vista/7 bake it right into the title bar graphics)

I honestly don't mind the concept of these OS/error sims and/or parodies. Given the tools available to them, and possibly the knowledge, most of their makers do the best they can. But yeah, for complete authenticity, can't beat the real thing, can you?

what I described was a joke the most accurate way to generate errors, but generally it's tedious and not worth it

if it weren't for and how I can be nitpicky about this, I'd also try to create one and add it to the page of things my website (chances of this happening: pretty low)

That moment when you realize you typed something wrong...
"last", not first...

and, fair enough.
Hmm, maybe I should integrate my windows skins into my layout (well, to a limited extent)
They need some TLC, though, and as-is, they wouldn't entirely work as a layout.

SAME

I get so annoyed by that, I wish one existed with the proper font (I think it's FixedSys?)

looks to be a bitmap font. (which is probably partially why there's no generators using it, paint dot net won't even load those fonts, and I'm not sure i ever even found their files (they are stored somewhere on disk, aren't they?))
due to some events i'd rather NOT discuss, i can work on very FEW projects right now...
so, i guess i could go dump the windows bitmap fonts as image files...

Shouldn't take me TOO long...
