Hello from a VM! (Again.) I feel like I did this recently, but oh well.

Getting this set up and working was difficult, but kind of surprising to see that my login was apparently still working. Opera 7.23 represent

I hesitate to see what kinds of other cruft is in this OS...

Needless to say most HTTPS sites don't work any more.

I wouldn't have imagined browsers using MDI windows before they started using tabs.

Opera was something of a pioneer of those features (they actually work really well, too) but rarely gets credit for starting the trend. Notice also that the tabs are at the bottom! (I could put them on the side or wherever else if I wanted.)

In fact the little dots next to the address bar are all bookmarks, but a few of them don't work any more...

meaningwhile, now it's following other trends, like switching to Webkit...

if I brought my old laptops back to life, I'd be using... IE6 or IE5

the oldest ones ran Win2000, but I think they're lost

Opera 7 is a good choice for lightweight browsers because it isn't bad Better than IE6 by a mile, especially for low-powered stuff.

I miss the days of the light web.

yeah, nowadays the trend is to Javascript bloat

my previous laptop (EeePC 1201N) was perfectly usable on the web in its days (2010 or so), nowadays try browsing any modern website on that and it's a lagfest

Window sitters still exist?

Sorry, that is all I can see of interest here.

Uh, so that's the small hard drive you were cloning some time ago.

anyway, I remember posting (or at least, browsing Jul) using an NT 3.51 VM with Firefox 2, but that was more or less long ago. It did have a working mIRC32 install as well.

AOL would like to have a word

Unfortunately I don't remember if my switch to a tabbed browser (some early Firefox) was a revolution for me or not :/

fun fact: MDI in wine still uses windows 3.x style icons instead of win9x minimized titlebars

MDI has mostly died out anyway, there's barely anything that still uses it anymore

If I wanted to do something like that, I would be more likely to set up a "real" VM that was based off of a clean image, and not one that's got tons of cruft in it. This one still has a lot of Toshiba Satellite-specific driver junk.

I wish I could find the other Windows 98 VM I had of the other (desktop) PC. That one had quite less "old stuff" since I used it for a shorter period of time, but it was the first PC I ever visited Acmlm's Board with.

I still have that as well, and a few extra versions. They probably don't work any more.

Maybe I can find a clean version and upload it.

Wasn't there a version that reported posts being made? (I can't remember if this was the board2 or Jul era, though...)

Have my own 98 VM shot from six and a half years ago (jesus fuck where does time go)

I kinda want to set one up again, but hell if I know everything I'd use...

I think it was board2 only, since Kawa developed it and we kind of had a falling-out after the split.

I have an original Windows 95 installation disk that I tried to use to install on real hardware. I got all the way to the end, booted it up, Error While Initializing Device IOS: Windows System Error (or something like that). So it was a letdown, as I didn't get it installed. Guess I'll have to try again another day...

The only thing I associate Windows 98 with anymore was my dad's old computer which ran 98 (not OSR2) all the way into 2005 or 2006 or so. Turned into a maintenance nightmare after a while (to the point where, after surviving a few reformats, it was using an installation key that I found on Google since the original had been lost...)

I used to have my own window sitter (written in VB6 based on Kawa's code, I think) which was Poochie from Yoshi's Island. I had some "fun" ideas for it (making it animate, chase the cursor, etc) that never got realized since I pretty much had no idea what I was doing at the time.

Sometimes I get half a mind to rewrite it now that I'd actually know how to, except I might find it kind of obnoxious after a while.
