tilde.town is one of many sites built on an interesting concept; it's a small Linux server that many people are given access to, usually with the main features being some internal communication tools (e.g. irc or email) and a "microsite" hosted at [site]/~user/, like the old days.

I'm on this one (as well as Sanqui), and it's kind of an interesting experience; it's a quiet, small community, sort of reliving the nostalgic days of the internet.

It's been interesting using an internal email system after never having used one before, too, though the one they have isn't too active (yet).

Are we doing a crossover now? Could we introduce some tilde.town folks to Jul?

might be fun to look at if I'm bored

I hope it isn't going to be like that free shell host I was at a few years back, that was run by incompetent dumbasses

There's no PHP

But yeah tilde.town is super fun and nice! I recommend checking it out if you're in table layouts and similar things.

I'm not sure how you expect something like this to be run; it's just a free place for microhosting (nothing big), there is little installed on this particular tilde-site other than a webserver and some command-line tools. It is more about replicating the "old-times" feeling of things than much else, but it is pretty good at what it does.

I was just drawing the analogy to shell hosts, which give you a shell (durr) and sometimes a webserver. Services similar to what you described about tilde.town.

KLayout v3.1
I guess that's something that will go in my personal To-do list (and as usual it will never get out of it). For what I've seen it does seem interesting.

This sounds interesting even though I have no fucking clue how this kind of stuff works outside of downloading PuTTY once and messing with it

I signed up for an account because the modern Internet is big and bloated and stupid and I just want to post some good old-fashioned HTML and maybe a dumb comic or two like I did in the '90s

(this is exactly what I wrote on the signup form)

that's kind of true, though

I have a laptop from 2009 or so, it could handle the 2009 web fine, but the 2016 web? nope, it's a lagfest on every modern site

thanks to the constant Hipsterscript explosion

I'm looking at everyone's sites and now I realize I could probably learn a thing or two about HTML/CSS with this

Browsing with JavaScript fully disabled is a real eye-opener. My tablet can barely chug through some pages and gets a handful of frames/second with it on, but disabling it makes pages run smoothly (and not jump around because of other shit loading!) ... not to mention that if you're on a slow or unstable connection like, say, 3G, a single script not loading can cause the entire page to stay blank until it times out.

well, I'll try that out, I guess it's also good for security.

although you have those sites that REQUIRE Javascript to function because they're coded by hipsters who love reimplementing all the browser's functionality.

eh, not something I knew in France

however, I remember something related that I liked in hotels

on the morning, there were Pokémon shows and I liked them, although it sucked that breakfast had to be taken at that time

now I wish I had a perfect solution for IRC

Weechat in the terminal is good, but it's subject to lag, which can make it a pain to type, on the other hand it's pretty tolerant to disconnects (I never have to reconnect, except after the night)

I was able to use my regular IRC client by SSH tunneling, which is nice and all (and keeps all IRC shit in one place), but Shit Telecom keeps breaking it, SSH is a lot less tolerant to disconnects outside of Weechat

maybe I could set up something more convoluted, setting up tunneling from my VPS and making my BNC connect to that

mosh solves this, and it can be used on tilde.town. Recommended!

I'll have to give it a try!

Somewhat relatedly, I found out that FileZilla supports private key auth, which is handy for uploading shit.

Needs converting it to a password-less private key, though :/
Maybe not if I use Pageant. Gotta look into that deeper (and eventually switch my server to key auth).
