So out of curiosity, am I right in believing that no one ever got around to adding a lot of this stuff to the Wiki?

I'm in a Tomba mood right now, and I found the unused items (well, most of them - Anything with just ITEM written on them I haven't added yet, since I haven't ripped them).

Is it okay if I look into it further, or is someone out there still going for it?

sorry, my real life has definitely gotten in the way of learning how to edit the wiki, please go ahead.

The initial video is used, but everything else mentioned in this thread can be added.

I'm still available to answer any questions as needed about used/unused as well if you need help with it.

There's a japanese demo disc from 1997 with Tomba on it (plus other games) now on ebay, if anyone has the cash and fancies digging around:

ebay item number 321969632324

Personally I haven't seen this one before

Also the standalone Japanese Tomba demo is back again:

ebay item number 221877493197

Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy or skills to dig, but I am curious what unused/hidden stuff might be on these

I'll buy these later, could be fun to have. I'll dump them as well so others can dig through it.

Hi,

Did anyone ever go through the Japanese version to see if the levels went unused there, too? I noticed that nothing came up on the English version earlier in this thread.

I've found a code to modify the level in the Japanese version, but it's not particularly reliable and I'd like to know if I should keep searching for anything out of the norm.

I PLAYED through the Japanese version of Tomba, and documented the differences I noticed in this thread (scroll up to find the post), though there was nothing major. However member "spinnyjoy" noticed a lot more differences than I did, so look out for that post too. Again, still nothing major.

I didn't go digging in the data or anything though. I think the best chance we've got of finding more unused Tomba stuff is for someone with the appropriate skills to go digging in the data of the Japanese version and the Japanese demo/trial verstions.

Classes started up again so I couldn't put down the 70 yet for the standalone demo yet, but the compilation demo is on the way and should be here during the first week of February. I'll be sure to dump it and let you guys look into it and see.

Awesome as a Tomba fan I appreciate your efforts, thank you

I wonder which demo is the earlier version? Presumably would have more chance of unused stuff the earlier version it is

Zerovii, I look forward to it! I appreciate you dumping it for others, too.

Not sure if this is anything worth noting, but when I warped to Haunted Mansion, it seems as though the game dumped me in the wrong area - most doors work, but two of them send Tomba straight through, and he keeps on walking through nothing forever.

Does anyone know how the music is stored? I somehow wound up getting Village of all Beginning's music to play with the instruments of 100 Year Old Man's House. Entering anywhere else with the code active mutes all music.

I have never experienced either of those glitches in any of my playthroughs on the PAL version or Japanese version.

The music data in Tomba 1 is nightmarishly complex though. I know this because I collect video game soundtracks and tried to find a Tomba 1 music pack a few years back. After sifting past a poor quality in-game-rip-with-SFX version and a high quality but faded-so-it-cuts-off-parts-of-the-tracks version, I finally found a PSF format pack (high quality, no fading, no SFX) which is almost perfect, but sadly one of the tracks sounds completely wrong (best way to describe is right tune but wrong instruments) and two other tracks sound slightly wrong (percussion is too loud). So in light of this I tried my hand at re-ripping those tracks from the game data. But despite spending a huge amount of time on it, reading all the tutorials I could find, experimenting like crazy, and asking everyone I could think of, I was unsuccessful.

More details on the Tomba 1 music ripping project here:

http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=164083

Anyway the point I was trying to make is that while I don't understand the technicalities, the "instruments" part of the tracks and "tune" part of the tracks are stored separately in Tomba 1. And do sound weird when incorrectly paired. So the audio glitch you are describing is completely possible.

Im guessing the compilation one, it has tbd on the package for the release date. Both are dated around the same time though so I'm not sure since I suspect the standalone demo might have more data anyway while the compilation is probably a trimmed down portion of the game.

I can put up the money for the standalone one now though, I'm really curious about tomba's dev cycle but without fluency in Japanese it's gonna be hard to find media that might have anything on it before it started getting localized/updated for the us.

EDIT:I do worry that these are just the final iso, but locked off at a point like the old jampack underground demo was in the US. Still nice to have I suppose and maybe something will have slipped through.
EDIT 2:Estimated delivery: Wed, Feb. 03–Fri, Feb. 26 for the standalone, same procedure, dumping when it arrives (quality estimate btw lmao)

If there's a TIM file for the original Iron Town on one of those discs I will probably crap my pants. Its absence is the only reason I don't have palettes for the existing art.

The compilation demo arrived today and I'm attempting to dump it right now.

Has a pretty interesting file structure but the tomba demo appears to be (rightfully) truncated, but there might be something there.

The good one will arrive later next week hopefully.

EDIT:a basic copy everything off the cd appears to be having trouble, if anyone can give some insight to another way Id appreciate it.

Are you just copying the files off the disc? PSX CDs tend to have some filesystem quirks that cause trouble for software expecting a standard CD filesystem.

I recommend ripping a full copy of the disc using ImgBurn, and then extracting files using a tool like CDMage.

That's what I was doing and it indeed was giving me grief. I just found imgburn by googling too so Ill try that. Thank you!

EDIT:looking at file dates, it appears the demo is only 2 months before the release date. The tomba folder was added 10/1/97, its release date was december 1997

EDIT:the bin works fine in epsxe

The demo itself is actually timed at 5 minutes so that's interesting though it probably only has village of all beginnings, and the music sounds REALLY different but I didnt get to go through all of it yet

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5dnr0t6e5tnun9y/playstation%20demo%201.rar?dl=0

Here's a link to the demo bin for those wanting to try it out.

SECOND EDIT:Noting some differences:
-in the winds cleared fmv, the purple grass has a different placement Nevermind that's apparently on the final too, I should really replay that since it only takes a few hours anyway..
-Charles is already sitting in the tree, he doesn't jump up there like in the final. stupid jp version I never play..
-there's no AP ring or AP box to be found
-re's no wind around the mailbox (might be in final too) again..
-no title screen music
-the event jingles sound different
-the entire village theme sounds different
-the map isn't there, the option? for it does nothing at all. Curious if it's even in the files
-I can't seem to get peach flower gas or biting egg plant events to trigger, though I haven't played the jp version to figure it out.
-No hint box pops up telling you how to swing when you first grab a swinging pole, also Im guessing the physics are different because I can cross the background gap before the old man's hut fine now while when I tried to TAS tomba us I would constantly overshoot it.
-tomba is missing the shocked animation when the stranger jumps down.

in the video
-phoenix mountain seems to be missing enemies entirely, no mini eggplants, no pigs, no charles
-haunted mansion looks even more unfinished, seems like it's missing collision for eggs and the kokka birds are a lighter purple instead of black. Might be a localization change though
-tomba has health meters showing no health at all, 1 health, and 3 health. I don't recall a way to lose max health in the final at all but admittedly it would be something Id avoid. The no health meter areas are the ones that look unfinished (charity square, phoenix mtn, haunted mansion)

Need to check:
-What are the rewards from the take me home event, I tried to use it to beat the timer but no luck Thanks spinnyjoy, no rewards as opposed to 2 1-ups in the final.
-is the function for the on screen timer still in the final or is it just in the exe file that launches tomba on the disc
-There's only the area00 folder on disc, but there could still be item/event listings somewhere. I'd really look into events because the demo splash screen says there are "150 obstacles" which is a pretty big step up from the 130 events we have..Id also need to understand Japanese which is a hindrance..
-Check AP reward amounts/general amounts in general
-Try to gain a level in red before the demo runs out, just to be thorough..

Klonoa demo looks normal, ToD demo freaking broke on me when learning a new art, didnt try the xenogears one yet.
Also if the compilation demo is like this, Im really curious about the standalone one now. The fact there's footage of what looks like incomplete phoenix mountain and haunted mansion is exciting!

Coincidentally I recently played that same demo and I can confirm that it ends after giving the chicks to the old man, the Peach Flower events don't work and the mailbox and Charles were like that in the final JP version. But yeah there isn't that many differences, mostly different sound-effects and instrumention for the music. Struck me how completely different Tomba's voice is in the demo though, lol.

Other differences besides what Zerovii mentioned:

-The frog that you take to the lake ("Take me home") appears in the area after clearing the fog instead (under those pumpkinlike things with the pig and Kokka bird on it)
-IIRC you get two 1-ups for completing "Take me home" in the final whereas you get nothing in this demo
-Tomba's mouth isn't open when charging up his weapon
-The loading screen is even more static than JP final
-Only one side of the haunted house level seems to have been built in the FMV and there's no background

Also probably not worth making a page in the wiki for the sequel(yet?) but there's one or two differences in the JP version of that game too (completely different soundtrack, slightly longer intro FMV that starts with a flashback to the first game, little to no voice-acting), not to mention the different title-screen in the bbackground of this(would probably be interesting to find the footage this was screencapped from): http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/1992/557696-34_ec07.jpg

There's a lot of stuff in this thread that hasn't been added to the wiki yet (mainly my own broken promises of being busy and not going through icons that are unused or making attempts to find proper palettes) as well as bugs and version differences.

I don't think there will be much for extra areas in this demo at least, the standalone might have more. This demo is truncated to only the area00 folder which only covers village of all beginnings iirc.

The sound differences are pretty significant, Im gonna do a jp run later tonight after class and note anything else different.

As for the sequel, Im not as huge of a fan so I haven't been looking into it.

Awesome to see some progress being made on finding new info and differences to add to the wiki!

Hopefully the standalone demo has more unused content like Iron Village or whatever it's called and unused items.

In regard to Tomba 2, personally I slightly prefer Tomba 2 for the overall gameplay, though Tomba 1 is still very good. The dialogue and voice acting in Tomba 2 is pretty bad though. I would be interested in hearing about unused content and differences in Tomba 2 if anyone wanted to look into it.

Other things to check on in the demo:
-Is the options menu still available, but dummied out? Same with the load/save game screens and already mentioned map screen
-Is saving possible? I don't recall any of the signs for saving being up but I didn't think about it when I was playing.
-look into an item modifier to see what else is available. If we could get the 100k key to open the red chest that would be cool! It would also be funny If we could get the fuel bar for gogokart
-check all text strings, I'm sure the 100 yr old man says something different.
-Double check on familiar mansion to see if it does that pan every time, in the demo video it scrolls up but the navy pig room door is open instead of the mansion door. I want to say it doesn't but I don't remember.
-Check the file structure again and document it.
-See if the GS codes from page 2 work, check by trying to get into mizuno's hut

In other news I was bored at work and went through the unused items/icons and made a small excel sheet out of it. I gotta add better descriptions to it but I'll be able to put it up on tcrf in the near future. I mean add it to the current one and add a column in the table for the icons and check to see if any of them have placeholder descriptions, I'd appreciate it if bmf could tell me how he found that as Im a bit dumb when it comes to this stuff.

The event one is trickier because it's actually really out of order compared to the event table, while the item icons and table matched up perfectly (aside from two blank entries).

I like tomba 2 ideally, but gameplay I find it feels a lot slower than tomba 1. Nothing wrong with that but after speedrunning 1, 2 feels like Im going through molasses. Also that conversation music cue idea was awful lol. Its still a good game honestly.

I think I actually got the item list from someone else (Tweaker?), but I also had some GS codes that let me access the unused items in-game. It's been a long time, though, and I don't think I have the codes anymore.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
